Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of Coppola's first films was a musical called "Finian's Rainbow", which was based on a 1947 Broadway hit play. Which legendary dancer starred in this 1968 film?

Answer: Fred Astaire

Fred Astaire played an Irishman named Finian, who traveled to a small town in the American South. He had stolen a pot of gold, intending to plant it, that it might grow faster. A leprechaun was following Finian-the gold was his. There were racial themes in "Finian's Rainbow" that were ahead of their time in 1947. Petula Clark co-starred as Finian's daughter.

The film featured some great songs: "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?" and "That Old Devil Moon." Fred Astaire was nearing the end of his brilliant career when he made this one.

He was still dancing (and singing) like no one else after 35 years in the movies. He died in 1987, at age 88.
2. In a change of pace, Coppola's 1969 film was "The Rain People." It was the story of a pregnant Long Island housewife who ran away from home, (trying to find herself), and met up with a brain-damaged hitch-hiker. They then traveled across the U.S. together. Which actors starred in the film?

Answer: James Caan and Shirley Knight

James Caan played the brain-damaged football player and Shirley Knight was the housewife who picked him up. The "Rain People" cast included Robert Duvall. Both Caan and Duvall would soon come together to work on the 1972 film "The Godfather".
3. This film was Coppola's next project, after 1972's "The Godfather". In this 1974 film, Gene Hackman was Harry Caul, an expert in audio surveillance, who suffered guilt over a prior job which resulted in three deaths. What was the name of the film?

Answer: The Conversation

Gene Hackman gave a great performance, as a man who spied on people for a living. There were lots of plot twists and suspense in this one. John Cazale, Allen Garfield, Frederic Forrest, Cindy Williams, Teri Garr and Harrison Ford were also featured in the movie. "The Conversation" was nominated for Best Picture of 1974, along with "Chinatown", "Lenny", "The Towering Inferno" and Coppola's "The Godfather II", which meant Coppola had two films nominated for Best Picture that year.
4. In 1979 Coppola released a film set during the Vietnam War. The plot: an Army captain was sent downriver and into the jungle to assassinate a renegade Special Forces officer. It was a difficult journey. Name the film, considered to be one of the director's best.

Answer: Apocalypse Now

"Apocalypse Now" was inspired by the Joseph Conrad novel "Heart of Darkness", published in 1902. One of the most notorious productions of the era, it was plagued with cast problems, script troubles and very bad weather on location. The film's cast included Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Martin Sheen, Frederic Forrest, Sam Bottoms, Dennis Hopper, Harrison Ford, Scott Glenn and Laurence Fishbourne. "Apocalypse Now" received Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Director for Coppola, but "Kramer vs Kramer" would win in both those categories. (Best Director Oscar went to Robert Benton for "Kramer vs Kramer".)
5. Coppola's musical released in 1982, was much anticipated. Set in Las Vegas, filmed on a studio sound stage, and starring Frederic Forrest, Teri Garr and Raul Julia, it was not received well by critics, and was a failure at the box office. Which film is it?

Answer: One From the Heart

"One From the Heart" was the story of a couple grown bored with each other. They separated, and each found the supposed person of their dreams. Coppola used his own money to finance the film, and it sent him into bankruptcy. Nastassja Kinski was featured in the film as well as Lainie Kazan, Harry Dean Stanton, Allen Garfield and Tom Waits.
6. Coppola followed in 1983 with a film based upon a novel written by a then-teenage author named Susan Elloise Hinton. The cast was packed with young actors who would become some of the biggest stars in films. It's still popular with young people today-which film is it?

Answer: The Outsiders

The plot of "The Outsiders" concerned two rival groups of teenagers, the Greasers and the Socials. Their rivalry turned violent when a young man was killed. The young cast included C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise, Diane Lane and Leif Garrett. S.E. Hinton was just fifteen when she began writing "The Outsiders."
7. Mickey Rourke and Matt Dillon were the stars of another Coppola endeavor, which was based on a novel by S.E. Hinton, and released in 1983. Shot in black-and-white in avant-garde style, with a musical score by Stewart Copeland and a large and talented cast, movie-goers either loved the film or hated it. Which film is it?

Answer: Rumble Fish

"Rumble Fish" was a story of teenage angst. Young Rusty James (Matt Dillon) idolized his tough older brother, who had arranged a peace treaty between two rival gangs. Problems arose when Rusty James broke the treaty. The film featured Diane Lane, Vincent Spano, Nicolas Cage, Dennis Hopper, Laurence Fishbourne, Chris Penn, Diana Scarwid, Tom Waits and a cameo by the director's daughter Sofia Coppola. The film was shot on location in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the same time as "The Outsiders".
8. 1984 saw a Coppola film about a famous New York nightclub, the mobsters and musicians who inhabited the place, and their romances. The film was "The Cotton Club". Who were the film's top-billed stars?

Answer: Richard Gere and Diane Lane

Richard Gere played musician Dixie Dwyer, Diane Lane was Vera, a young dancer and the girlfriend of a top gangster. Trouble came when Dwyer fell in love with Vera. The Cotton Club was a legendary Harlem jazz club and well-known mob hangout. Gregory Hines, Lonette McKee, Bob Hoskins, James Remar and Nicolas Cage also appeared.

This production was by most accounts a troubled one. Francis Ford Coppola's financial troubles were well known; he was nearly bankrupt, and there were rumors of strife among cast members. One of the film's producers, Roy Radin, was murdered during filming, allegedly over financial matters related to the film, attracting a lot of terrible publicity.
9. A teen-age girl fainted at her high school reunion and woke up to find herself in her own past. The film posed the question: If you were to know what your future holds, would you change it? Kathleen Turner and Nicolas Cage starred in this 1986 film. What was it?

Answer: Peggy Sue Got Married

Don Murray, Barbara Harris, Maureen O'Sullivan, Catherine Hicks, Joan Allen, Jim Carrey and Sofia Coppola were also featured in the film. Nicolas Cage is Coppola's nephew, and had worked on two previous projects with his uncle. The movie was the first box-office success for Coppola since "Apocalypse Now", and was well-received by critics. Kathleen Turner received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for the film, but lost out to Marlee Matlin's performance in "Children of a Lesser God".
10. No Francis Ford Coppola quiz would be complete without a "Godfather" question. Both "Godfather I" and "Godfather II" won the Academy Award for Best Picture in their respective years.

Answer: True

Both "Godfather I" (1972) and "Godfather II" (1974) were Best Picture Oscar winners. The first two Godfather films are generally considered to be among the top all-time great movies. It was the well-known story of the Corleone family, organized crime, and the transfer of power from father to son. Quite a few of us have seen the films so many times we can recite the dialogue right along with the actors.
There was a third "Godfather" film in 1990, which was not nearly as well received by critics or the public as the first two.
Francis Ford Coppola has become a restaurateur and winery owner in Northern California, and continues to make films occasionally. A 2009 project, tentatively titled "Tetra" was filmed in Argentina amid rumors of financial and artistic problems.
