Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the movie, cowboy drifters Carter and Croft ride into town. Which two actors play these roles?

Answer: Henry Fonda and Henry Morgan

Carter is disappointed to learn that his girl Rose has headed to San Francisco - she had promised to wait for him. Carter is a bit of a hot-head, and gets into a brawl in the saloon. Croft is the diplomat of the two, and calms down his friend.

Henry Morgan (birth name, Harry Bratsberg) is the same actor as Harry Morgan, beloved for his portrayal of Colonel Sherman T. Potter. At the time he was breaking into film, a radio humorist known as Henry Morgan (real name, Henry Lerner Van Ost) was popular so he gradually adopted the name Harry Morgan to be distinguished from the radio star.
2. Carter and Croft try to enlist the judge's help in preventing the posse from riding out for a lynching. But first they must get past the judge's housekeeper. Which actress, known for wicked roles, plays the cantankerous housekeeper?

Answer: Margaret Hamilton

She informs them that it isn't regular business hours, and leaves them in the front parlour. Margaret Hamilton once appeared on the "Mister Rogers" show to demonstrate to frightened children that she was only playing a role in her iconic turn as the Wicked Witch of the West.
3. The posse finally catches up with three men they accuse of cattle rustling and the murder of rancher Larry Kinkaid. One of them claims to speak only Spanish - we later learn that he is fluent in ten languages. What native Spanish speaker plays Juan Martinez?

Answer: Anthony Quinn

He also is skilled with knives, and is a notorious gambler. Quinn and Montalban were both born in Mexico. Lamas and Rey were both born in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
4. Don Martin, the leader of the three men caught by the posse begs for justice, to no avail. Which actor plays this tortured soul?

Answer: Dana Andrews

His tousled hair flies as he pleads for the others in the group - the feeble-minded old man he calls "Pops" and "the Mexican". He later played a detective opposite Gene Tierney in "Laura". Andrews suffered from alcoholism - after attaining sobriety, he recorded a public service announcement urging alcoholics to seek help.
5. Who directed "The Ox-Bow Incident"?

Answer: William A. Wellman

He directed several other well-known films, including "The Public Enemy", "Beau Geste" and the first version of "A Star is Born". Wellman began as an actor but moved to directing. He won the first ever Academy Award for Best Picture for his film "Wings".
6. When the posse first rides out, a stagecoach careens down the hill and is quickly pursued by the mob. Who is inside the stagecoach?

Answer: Carter's former girlfriend

Throughout the movie, Carter (Henry Fonda) has a very short fuse and is quick to argue. Somehow, his tongue is stilled seeing his former girlfriend with her new husband.
7. While they chase the stagecoach, the driver fires on the posse thinking he is being robbed. Who takes a bullet in the arm?

Answer: Art Croft

Henry/Harry Morgan's character spends the rest of the movie with his left arm tucked inside his coat. This is just another example that vigilante justice hurts more people than it helps.
8. Toward the end of the movie, we learn that Larry Kinkaid isn't dead. Who brings this news?

Answer: The sheriff

Before leaving for Kinkaid's place, the sheriff had deputized Mapes. Never trust a man everyone calls "Butch". The word "sheriff" comes from the words "shire" and "reeve" - an official overseeing the affairs of a district.
9. One of the characters shoots himself - we don't know whether it is from remorse or from shame as his son berates him for his role in the matter. Which character is this?

Answer: Major Tetley

The dialogue intimates that he did not serve entirely honorably in the armed forces despite retaining his uniform and title. Tetley was portrayed by Frank Conroy, who was born in England.
10. At the end of the movie, one of the characters sets out to take care of the lynched man's wife and children. Who is it?

Answer: Carter , one of the drifters

Before the hanging, Don Martin writes a letter to his wife. Carter reads it aloud in the saloon, and its words about justice strike home to all those who hear it.
