Ronald Searle first published his "St. Trinian" cartoons in 1941 immediately before he was posted to Singapore where he was captured by the Japanese and made prisoner of war. Whilst a prisoner he drew cartoons of camp life which he also published in the book "Naked Island" after his liberation in 1945.

Reginald Smythe created the cartoon "Andy Capp", Charles M Schultz created the cartoon "Peanuts" and Brad Anderson created the cartoon "Marmaduke".

2. St. Trinian's School for Girls, as depicted in the film series, was in fact based on a genuine school in Great Britain. Which school was it based upon?

Answer: St .Trinnean's in Edinburgh, Scotland

St. Trinnean's School for Girls was at 10 Palmerston Road, Edinburgh. It operated as a school from 1922 until the outbreak of the Second World War. Today it is in private ownership.
A family by the name of Johnston whose two daughters attended St Trinnean's were evacuated to Kirkudbright, where they met Sapper Ronald Searle. He drew a cartoon depicting his idea of the school attended by the girls which was published by Lilliput. The uniform was based upon the school that Searle's daughter Kate attended, James Allen Girls School in Dulwich.

Alistair Sim (1900-1976) played not only the headmistress, Miss Millicent Fritton, but also her brother Clarence who was a less than reputable bookmaker.
Miss Fritton was somewhat avant garde for the day and turned a blind eye to the girls' nefarious and occasionally illegal activities at school.

George Cole first found fame as the notorious cockney Spiv in the "St. Trinian's" films. He went on to greater acclaim as corrupt dealer Arthur Daley in the British comedy series "Minder" which ran from 1979 to 1994.

The rule of thumb was that the smaller the girl pupil the more "dangerous" she would be. The films generally depicted the Fourth Form as the crazy, mischievous and dangerous pupils, while the older Sixth Form engaged their more feminine wiles on screen to the horror of the somewhat staid 1950s viewing public.

The unfortunate police sergeant Ruby Gates was besotted with her boss Superintendent Kemp-Bird who often tasked her to infiltrate St. Trinian's School for Girls at great risk to her personal safety.
Joyce Grenfell (1910-1979) appeared in many classic Ealing comedies but was also renowned for her comedic monologues.

When Princess Fatima, the daughter of a wealthy Sheik arrived at the school, interest from the other pupils and the headmistress was aroused. They learned that her father's horse, "Arab Boy", was to race in the nearby Gold Cup.
The 6th Form needed the horse to lose as part of a betting scam with the 'bookie' brother of the headmistress. However the 4th form and the headmistress wanted it to win as the remaining school funds had been placed on it at 10/1.
George Cole as the "spiv" and Joyce Grenfell as undercover Sgt. Ruby Gates added to the mayhem, as the two opposing sides sank into skullduggery to achieve their aims.

Featuring a gaggle of big names from the time this poor attempt to relight the magic of the original films received a terrible reception from media and public alike. Sheila Hancock, Rodney Bewes, Maureen Lipman et al could not lift this cheap re-incarnation to the level of former films.
Not surprisingly when the St. Trinian's box set was released this one was not amongst the collection.

Answer: A team of villains

A team of bad guys led by Frankie Howard's character reprised the genuine "Great Train Robbery" of three years earlier in this 1966 production.
The thieves stashed their ill gotten gains in a deserted country mansion. When they returned to collect the �2.5m loot a few years later they discovered that the Ministry of Schools had relocated the pupils of St. Trinian's to this mansion.
The thieves enrolled their daughters in the school and film culminated in a dramatic and hilarious train chase between the girls and the thieves.
