Joanna Eberhardt's passion is photography. She is often seen with a camera in hand. In fact, when she meets Bobbie, she is taking photos. In one scene, she is upset when a critic doesn't like her photos. When Bobbie leaves her kids with Joanna for a weekend, Joanna takes pictures of the children playing in the backyard.

A critic really likes the pictures. Joanna realizes Bobbie is a Stepford wife after Joanna tells Bobbie of the critic's liking for the photos.

The first strange incident happens right after the family moves to Stepford when Carol Van Sant comes up to Walter and offers him a casserole. Bobbie, after noticing the oddity of the Stepford women, is convinced there is something in the water. She successfully tries to convince Joanna to call up Joanna's ex-boyfriend, now a chemist. The two have the water tested, but the tests show nothing is wrong.

After Joanna realizes Bobbie has "changed" she runs back to her house, but her children aren't there. Screaming to her husband, Joanna races through the house. She races to the building and hears her "children" calling. When she throws open the door of a room, she is greeted by Dale Coba and a tape player playing children's calls.

In one scene, Joanna is being convinced to recite a word list into a tape recorder. In another scene, Bobbie and Joanna go to visit post-"change" Charmaine. When Bobbie questions her about Stepford's "archaic gender roles", Charmaine seems to have no idea what the word means.

When Joanna goes to Bobbie's house after Bobbie's "change", Bobbie doesn't know the word, though she used it only a short while ago. That is when Joanna realizes why they don't know the word: it wasn't on the word list they had to recite.
