In the end, it took Jack's and Will's blood to lift the curse. Everyone who took gold from the cursed chest had to pay the blood sacrifice. Before they are getting ready to make Elizabeth's sacrifice, Barbossa asked all of his men who among them had paid the blood sacrifice to the heathen gods, and they all sounded off.

Then he asked whose sacrifice had not been paid. At the time Bootstrap Bill was the only one whose sacrifice had not been paid, seeing as how they had tied him to a cannon and sunk him in the ocean. Later, when they are getting ready to sacrifice Will, Jack takes a handful of coins from the chest, and drops three back in, keeping one so that he himself would be cursed.

This enabled him to keep them from breaking the curse without him, and kept him from dying while fighting Barbossa. Jack slices his hand on his sword, getting blood on the coin, and throws it to Will.

He then shoots Barbossa, who thinks he wasted the shot that he has waited ten years to fire. Will, who has already cut his own hand, drops both coins into the chest, lifting the curse.

The mutinous Barbossa lives long enough to feel cold as he collapses and dies.
