Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why does Terry return to his childhood home in the beginning of the movie?

Answer: He hopes that his sister will lend him some money.

Terry's sister, Sammy, is a single mother who leads a very organized life. Terry, on the other hand, is a nomad who goes where the wind takes him. Despite having grown up together, the two siblings are complete opposites. This personality difference is illustrated by the fact that Terry believes his visit in Scottsville is just a brief pit stop, since he and his sister have grown apart. Sammy, however, is very excited about seeing her brother, and is hurt when she finds out money is what he is after.
2. What is the name of Sammy's son?

Answer: Rudy

Sammy named her son after his father, which is rather interesting because that relationship didn't end on good terms. Bob is the name of the man Sammy dated who proposed to her. Darryl is the name of the town sheriff. He was the person who told her that her parents had been killed in a car crash when she was a child.
3. What news does Terry get about a friend shortly after he moves into his childhood home?

Answer: She has attempted suicide.

When we first see Terry, he is in a little apartment with a girl who is asking him to get money for her. The exact nature of their relationship is not explicitly stated, though it appears they are or have been romantically involved. When Terry asks his sister for money, he tells Sammy that it is for a friend who is in trouble, whom I assume is the girl in the apartment. Again, it is not known for sure what this trouble is, but it is apparently serious enough that she decides to kill herself over it.

She is not successful, however.
4. What unreasonable request does Sammy's boss, Brian, make of his employees?

Answer: Only conservative colors can be used for computer color schemes.

The new manager of the bank, Brian (played by Matthew Broderick), is not as easygoing as the previous manager. He and Sammy butt heads over several issues, including her coworkers' use of pink and purple on their computer screens, and not allowing her to meet her son's school bus in the afternoon.

Their passionate conflict at work soon turns into passion of a different kind, as Sammy embroils herself in another affair.
5. Where does Terry take Sammy's son in the evenings (and makes him promise not to tell his mother)?

Answer: To a pool hall

Sammy has firm restrictions on how much television her son is allowed to watch. When his TV time expires, Terry is at a loss about how to keep him occupied, so he takes the boy down to the local pool hall. The first time they go to the pool hall, the two of them defeat their opponent when Terry sinks all of the balls except one, which Sammy's son taps into the pocket.

This scene shows one of the first times uncle and nephew bond in the movie.
6. Why does Sammy visit her priest?

Answer: All of these statements are correct.

At one point, Sammy asks the priest, "I don't know what the church's official position is on fornication and adultery these days, and I felt really hypocritical not saying anything to you about it before, but... what *is* the official position these days?". The somewhat flabbergasted priest responds, "Well... it's a sin".
7. Why does Sammy find it difficult to end her affairs with both Bob and Brian?

Answer: She claims she feels sorry for them.

Sammy has trouble dealing with the men in her life, for a number of reasons. However, she herself is not aware that she is not truly in control until after her conversation with the priest. It is at this point that she realizes she isn't staying with Bob and Brian because it is good for her, but because it is good for them (in her opinion). Shortly thereafter, Sammy ends her affair with Brian, and turns down Bob's proposal. Loneliness is not mentioned as an issue for her, since she has her son to keep her company.
8. Why is Terry arrested during the course of the movie?

Answer: He gets into a fistfight with the father of Sammy's son.

Although Terry does mention that he was arrested for getting involved in a bar fight prior to returning home to Scottsville, he is also arrested near the end of the movie. Terry decides that Sammy's son has the right to know who his father is, even though Sammy doesn't want him to know. Terry and the boy go to his father's house, where the man denies his son. Terry gets angry, and the two get into a fistfight.

The cops arrive, and Terry is arrested.
9. How does Sammy react to Terry's arrest?

Answer: She asks him to leave the house immediately.

Sammy is definitely upset that Terry took her son to see his biological father. She asks Terry to find another place to stay because she doesn't believe he knows how to act around an eight year old. Terry agrees to leave, but he is angry that she is asking him to leave their childhood home (of which he owns half).

He tells Sammy's son that he knows he made a mistake, and figured that he would be given a second chance. He also claims that Sammy has made plenty of mistakes too. Terry withdraws from Sammy and her son immediately, but realizes that he cares about them too much to stay angry.
10. How does the movie end?

Answer: Sammy and her son stay in Scottsville; Terry moves on to his next stop.

Terry decides to move on again, which is not that surprising since it is in his nature to roam. Sammy stays in Scottsville, despite her rocky relationship with her boss, because she still likes the order of her life. At the same time, Terry has learned some responsibility from taking care of his nephew, and Sammy has learned to unbend a little.

Therefore, each has learned from the other while still maintaining their separate personalities. In my opinion, the movie showed a very clever balance of stability and change.
