Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rumor has it the song referring to this college town was inspired by a drug bust at a college party. Ooooooh no, that won't do! Oleanders were soon to be in blooming there according to Steely Dan's 1973 hit. Can you name where?

Answer: Annandale

"My Old School" has a few other locations I could have gone with, maybe Mexico and Guadalajara but I did not think I could be so cruel.
2. According to Mrs. Avery and Dr. Hook, Sylvia was soon to be wed to a fellow down the way of this Texas town. Don't call the operator for info on this one unless you want to keep sinking 40 cents into the payphone.

Answer: Galveston

Shel Silverstein wrote "Sylvia's Mother" this hit for Dr, Hook & The Medicine Show. Yes, that's the same guy who wrote the book "Where the Sidewalk Ends" that Mom and Dad read to me a few years back. He also wrote another one of their hits "Cover of the Rolling Stone"; both are great tunes.
3. One hit wonder Paper Lace sang a song referring to massive urban unrest in this well-known American city.

Answer: Chicago

The 1974 hit "The Night Chicago Died" was all I think we ever heard from Paper Lace. The question is inspired by the opening lyrics "Daddy was a cop on the Eastside of Chicago back in the USA back in the bad old days..."
4. Gordon Lightfoot sang of a doomed freighter under weigh with 26 thousand tons of iron ore en route to this city.

Answer: Cleveland

The "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" is a long ballad chronicling the fate of the ship and crew of that Great Lakes freighter. In reality, the ship was not headed for Cleveland, but Detroit; Lightfoot took artistic license with some of the facts.
5. Three Dog Night claimed they were never there, but they sang of hearing about some crazy women in this European country.

Answer: Spain

"Well I've never been to Spain but I kind of like the music, they say the ladies are insane there..." So many great hits from Three Dog Night, I don't think they get the credit that they deserve. Truly under rated and under appreciated in my humble opinion. OK, maybe I'm not so humble; many posters on FT know that.
6. A mysterious and conceited jet set gent, rumored to be an ex-lover of Carly Simon, traveled here to view a solar eclipse.

Answer: Nova Scotia

There has been much speculation as to whom, if anyone in particular, Carly Simon is alluding to in this 1972 classic. The candidates include a list of her ex-lovers. I'm going with Warren Beatty.
7. Cheap Trick sang of their parents being OK albeit "a little weird". But you can't get too down on Dad and Mom, after all, according to Dad, Mom's a veteran of the Women's Auxiliary Air Corps. She served in this location before wedding dear old Dad.

Answer: Philippines

"Surrender" is one of my favorites from the 70s. Cheap Trick had a great sound with other hits like "I Want You To Want Me". "Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I hear you crying" because you missed this question? Well "Ain't That A Shame".
8. The Eagles sang of being stranded on a corner in this town with the hope of getting a ride in a Ford flatbed with a girl driving it.

Answer: Winslow

The song is "Take It Easy" and the state is Arizona. Who's better than The Eagles? NOBODY!
9. Deep Purple seemed quite content with a woman from this city and why not? "She's so good."

Answer: Tokyo

Deep Purple released the 1973 hit "Woman From Tokyo"; other hits by them include "Hush" and their classic hard rock hit "Smoke On The Water".
10. Gerry Rafferty wound his way down famous Baker Street. The 1978 hit is referring to the Baker Street in this city. Perhaps a little Sherlock Holmes detective work will help you on this one.

Answer: London

Yep, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional detective Sherlock Holmes lived on Baker Street as well. I'm told this song is more about the music business that thrived there then rather than any detective mysteries. This is a great anthem from the late 70s, any info you have regarding it I would appreciate you passing it to me.
