Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My first song titled 'America' features in the sound track of an award winning Broadway show which is based on Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet'. What is the name of the show?

Answer: West Side Story

The film version of 'West Side Story', released in 1961, won ten Oscars. This song, 'America' features in one of my favourite scenes in the film where Anita sings the praises of the United States, while her boyfriend, Bernardo responds with criticism of the way in which Puerto Ricans are treated in America.
2. My next song, titled 'America', is featured in a modern version of the film 'The Jazz Singer'. Who is the writer and singer of this song?

Answer: Neil Diamond

This song was written and recorded in 1980 for the film 'The Jazz Singer'. Although the film was considered a flop, the soundtrack has some great tunes. The song reached number 8 in the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1980.
3. For my next song with an American theme, we are going back to musical theater. In which musical does a character called 'The Engineer' sing about 'The American Dream'?

Answer: Miss Saigon

In this song the Engineer imagines what his life will be like if he finally makes it to America using Kim and her son to get him there, pretending to be Kim's uncle. In the show it is a loud, upbeat number which is in direct contrast to what happens next, but you will have to see the show to understand!
4. My next song titled 'America' is a modern one, recorded by an English indie band and released in October 2006. What was the name of the band who had this hit record?

Answer: Razorlight

The song was the band's first UK number one single and it came from their self-titled second album, 'Razorlight'.
5. This song with an American theme was written about the 'Day the Music Died'. What was the name of the song?

Answer: American Pie

'American Pie', written and recorded by Don McLean, is reputed to recount the day a plane crash killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper. The song was a number one US hit in 1972 and reached number twelve in the UK chart when it was re-released in 1991.
6. My next song with 'America' in the title was released in 1972 and was a hit for 1960's duo, Simon and Garfunkel. Although hitch-hiking is mentioned, what is the main method of transport described in the song?

Answer: Greyhound Bus

'America' was written by Paul Simon and first released on the album 'Bookends' in 1968. Surprisingly, when it was released as a single in 1972 it only reached number 72 in the American Billboard hot 100. The line where this is mentioned is "Kathy," I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh".
7. My next American themed song, "American Girl", was the second hit single in the UK for an American singer songwriter, who has also performed under the pseudonym of Muddy Wilbury. Who is this famous 'Heartbreaker'?

Answer: Tom Petty

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who have gone through a number of line ups over the years, have had success with numerous recordings and were awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999 for their contribution to the music industry.
The Wilbury reference is for the 'Traveling Wilburys' of which Tom Petty was a founding member along with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne.
8. Next in my journey through songs with an American theme is one which doesn't actually have the word 'America' in the title, but does have it in the chorus as 'Good Morning America'. What is the actual title of the song?

Answer: The City of New Orleans

The song 'The City of New Orleans' was written by Steve Goodman, and has been sung by many people including Arlo Guthrie who had the first hit with it. Willie Nelson's version, made number one in the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in 1984, the same year it won a Grammy for Goodman, although posthumously as he had died of leukemia earlier that year.
