The very first British Grand Prix was held at Brooklands circuit, near Weybridge in Surrey in 1926. The 1950 Grand Prix was the first official Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix.
2. The official F1 World Championship as we know it started in 1950 with the British Grand Prix. Which circuit hosted that race?

Answer: Silverstone

Silverstone hosted the race regularly and between 1948 and 2008 a total of 45 races were held there. Between 1955 and 1986 the race was also held at Brands Hatch and Aintree Racecourse venues. Silverstone hosted the event every year for over twenty years following that.
3. The 1950 British Grand Prix, in addition to being the first F1 World Championship race, was also designated the Grand Prix for Europe for that year. Who won that first race in 1950?

Answer: Giuseppe Farino

Giuseppe (Nino) Farino, nephew of Pinin Farino, won the race driving for Alfa Romeo. He won three out of the seven races in the 1950 inaugural season, securing the first ever F1 World Championship.
4. What was unusual about the 1957 British Grand Prix?

Answer: The win was shared by two British drivers.

The race was won by Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks, who shared the driving in a Vanwall. Stirling Moss had pole position, drove the fastest lap and led the race in 43 out of the 90 laps. Moss drove for 64 laps and Brooks for 26 and they shared the eight championship points for first place.
5. The 1960s saw one British driver winning five British Grand Prix races. Who was that racing champion?

Answer: Jim Clark

Jim Clark was one of the most successful drivers of the 1960s, winning two World Championships in 1963 and 1965. He won the British Grand Prix five times in 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1967.
6. The so-called playboy race driver, James Hunt, actually crossed the finishing line first in both the 1976 and 1977 British GPs. However his 1976 win was later disqualified. What was the reason for this?

Answer: He didn't complete a red flag lap on his way back to the pit for repairs.

In a controversial race, Hunt's car was damaged in an accident at the first corner and the race was red flagged. Hunt was judged to have contravened regulations by not completing a full red flag lap before returning to the pit for repairs. He was allowed to restart the race due to crowd pressure and subsequently won the race, however he was later disqualified and the race win went to Niki Lauda in a Ferrari.

Answer: Keke Rosberg

8. Michael Schumacher has had some interesting British GPs, including breaking his leg in a major accident in 1999. The year before, 1998, he achieved the first of his two British GP wins in an unusual fashion. What happened?

Answer: He won the race in the pit lane.

Schumacher had to serve a ten second stop and go penalty towards the end of the race. The Ferrari team brought him in on the last lap to serve the penalty which meant he crossed the finishing line while in the pit lane, and then took the penalty. This was controversial however the win stood.
