Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "La tua povera Zerlina; Starò qui come agnellina Le tue botte ad aspettar."

Answer: Batti, Batti --- Don Giovanni

"Batti, Batti o Bel Masetto" is from "Don Giovanni" by Mozart. The title translated means "beat me, beat me, oh dear Masetto." Zerlina (the peasant girl who performs this aria) is pleading with Masetto to beat her if that is what he wants, but maintains that she is innocent of any wrongdoings with the title character, Don Giovanni.
2. "Mi struggo e mi tormento! O Dio, vorrei morir! Babbo, pietà, pietà!"

Answer: O mio babbino caro --- Gianni Schicchi

"O Mio Babbino Caro" is from "Gianni Schicchi" by Puccini (and is one of the most beautiful arias ever). It is performed by Lauretta, the daughter of Gianni Schicchi, and she is essentially saying "help me marry the man I love or I will die."
3. "negli occhi suoi spuntò... quelle festose giovani invidiar sembrò... Che più cercando io vo?"

Answer: Una furtiva lagrima ---L'Elisir d'Amore

"Una furtiva lagrima" is from "L'Elisir d'Amore" by Donizetti. It is performed by Nemorino, a young peasant in love. Nemorino has just realized that the woman he loves, Adina, cares for him as well. He sings of this joy at finding that he is loved by her.
4. "Dôme épais le jasmin, A la rose s'assemble, Rive en fleurs frais matin, Nous appellent ensemble."

Answer: The Flower Duet --- Lakmé

"The Flower Duet" is from "Lakmé" by Leo Delibes. It is performed by Lakmé and her servant, Malika. Together they sing of the beauty surrounding them:
"Dome made of jasmine,
Entwined with the rose together,
Both in flower, a fresh morning,
Call us together."
5. "Io sono docile, son rispettosa, sono obbediente, dolce, amorosa; mi lascio reggere, mi fo guidar."

Answer: Una voce poco fa ---Il Barbiere di Siviglia

"Una voce poco fa" is from "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" by Rossini. It is performed by Rosina, and it is purely a love song.
6. "Chiamerà Butterfly dalla lontana Io senza far risposta Me ne starò nascosta Un po' per celia, Un po' per non morire"

Answer: Un bel dì vedremo --- Madame Butterfly

"Un bel dì vedremo" from "Madame Butterfly" by Puccini is another beautiful aria. Madame Butterfly (a Japanese girl also known as Cio-Cio-San) is singing about the beautiful day when her American husband returns home to her.
7. "Al mio duolo, a'miei sospir! O mi rendi il mio tesoro, O mi lascia almen morir."

Answer: Porgi, Amor --- Le Nozze di Figaro

"Porgi, Amor" is from "Le Nozze di Figaro" by Mozart (and is one of the toughest arias to sing). It is performed by Countess Almaviva during Act II. In this aria she sings about how her husband, Count Almaviva, has stopped loving her. She asks for either her love or death.
8. "Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen, Tod und Verzweiflung flammet um mich her!"

Answer: Queen of the Night's Aria --- Die Zauberflöte

"Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen" is from Act II, Scene III of the German opera "Die Zauberflöte" (The Magic Flute) by Mozart. It is a song of revenge.
9. "Belle nuit, O nuit d'amour souris a no ivreses."

Answer: Barcarolle --- Les Contes d'Hoffmann

I don't know too much about this duet from "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" (The Tales of Hoffmann). It is from Act II of the opera by Offenbach (his only succesful one) and is absolutely beautiful. It was featured in the Italian film "Life is Beautiful."
10. "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle Que nul ne peut apprivoiser, Et c'est bien en vain qu'on l'appelle, S'il lui convient de refuser."

Answer: Habanera --- Carmen

These lyrics come from "Habanera", performed by Carmen in the opera "Carmen" by Bizet. I love this aria, as many people do. Carmen, a gypsy, seductively sings about love and its unpredictable consequences: "Love is like a rebellious bird that cannot be tamed". You've gotta love it!
