With many songs hitting the top twenty, "People Gotta Be Free" was only the third number one hit for The Rascals. It was written by Cavaliere and Brigati in response to the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy.
8. What was the #3 hit of the year 1968? "Now all I have is memories of Honey, And I wake up nights and call her name. Now my life's an empty stage, Where Honey lived and Honey played, And love grew up. And a small cloud passes overhead, And cries down on the flower bed, That Honey loved."

Answer: Honey

Bobby Goldsboro had a very successful career, both singing and writing songs for many artists, including Aretha Franklin and Bette Midler. At the time of its release, "Honey" broke all sales records, becoming the largest selling record in the world. "Honey", was written by Bobby Russell.
9. What was the #2 hit of 1968? The version of this song that occupies position #2 on our countdown is an instrumental. However it was recorded twice more in '68, once in English, and once in French. Answer: Love is Blue

French composer-conducter Paul Mauriat had a huge hit with the hauntingly beautiful song "Love is Blue", composed by Andre Popp. Andy Williams released the English version of the song, and his wife, Claudine Longet, released the French version.
10. What was the #1 hit song of the year 1968? "Hey Jude, don't make it bad, Take a sad song and make it better. Remember to let her into your heart, Then you can start to make it better."

Answer: Hey Jude

"Hey Jude" held the number one position on U.S. charts for an incredible 9 weeks, longer than any other Beatles' release. Interestingly enough, it was never performed in front of a live audience by the group, since they had stopped touring. Paul McCartney originally wrote the song for John Lennon's son Julian, to help him feel better about the divorce of his parents.

At that point Paul sang the lyrics as "Hey Jules".
