Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year was Tommy born?

Answer: 1914

He is born just after World War I, where his father was fighting but is missing in action.
2. Tommy witnesses a murder that traumatizes him, causing him to go deaf, dumb, and blind. Who murdered who?

Answer: Captain Walker murdered Mrs. Walker's lover

Mrs. Walker, under the impression that Captain Walker was dead, had found another man that she was going to marry. Turns out Captain Walker wasn't dead...and wasn't too happy about seeing his wife with another man. And, as if that wasn't enough, Captain Walker and Mrs. Walker insist that "You didn't hear it, you didn't see it, you won't say nothing to no one, never in your life"! Well, guys, guess he's not going to.

In the movie based on this album, this critical plot point is reversed, and Mrs. Walker's lover murders Captain Walker.
3. How does Tommy witness the murder that causes him to go deaf, dumb, and blind? This is never stated outright, but is made clear by lyrical choices, and by some of Tommy's later actions.

Answer: He sees it through the reflection in his mirror

If you listen carefully to the background of the "You didn't hear it" part of "1921," you'll hear Tommy protesting: "You didn't hear it (I heard it), you didn't see it (I saw it)," etc. This represents the "reflection." He ends up spending a lot of his time staring into this mirror once he loses his sight, hearing, and voice.
4. Tommy CAN see and hear in a way, just not in the usual way. How so?

Answer: Everything he senses turns to music in his mind

The evidence of this is strewn throughout the album in songs such as "Amazing Journey" ("Each sensation makes a note in my symphony") and "See Me, Feel Me/Listening To You" ("Listening to you, I get the music").
5. Who is the first person the Walkers take Tommy to in an attempt to cure him?

Answer: The Hawker

The Hawker is a cult leader. The Walkers follow his rituals in hopes of a miracle cure. Obviously, it doesn't work. If it did, that would be the end of the album.
6. When a certain day comes around, what fear is manifested in the Walkers that makes them even more obsessed with curing Tommy than they were before?

Answer: The fear of Tommy going to Hell

The day, by the way, is Christmas. Because Tommy is deaf, dumb, and blind, he can't learn anything about his religion and therefore, the Walkers think he'll never "see the light," since he can't see at all.
7. Which of these does Cousin Kevin do to Tommy?

Answer: Burns him with a cigarette

"Maybe a cigarette burn on your arm
Would change your expression to one of alarm..."

Of all people, the Walkers decided to leave Tommy with HIM when they went out for the evening. He's not a nice boy. Not a nice boy at all.
8. What is the Acid Queen's alias? (Well, other than "The Acid Queen.")

Answer: The Gypsy

"I'm the Gypsy,
The Acid Queen,
Pay before we start..."

The next person the Walkers take Tommy to in an attempt to cure him is the Gypsy/Acid Queen, a prostitute who gives Tommy psychedelic drugs. It doesn't go well. His experience is caught in the ten-minute instrumental "Underture."
9. What condition is Uncle Ernie in when the Walkers decide to leave Tommy with him?

Answer: He's drunk

"Do you think it's alright
To leave the boy with Uncle Ernie?
Do you think it's alright?
He's had a few too many tonight..."

Smart move, guys. Leave Tommy with his drunken uncle. Needless to say, things don't go well. Uncle Ernie is a pedophile who likes to "fiddle about".
10. Even people who have never heard any other song from this album EVER know that Tommy's a "Pinball Wizard." How many songs is pinball mentioned in?

Answer: four

"Christmas" ("Playing poxy pinball..."), "Pinball Wizard" of course, "Miracle Cure" ("Pinball wizard and a miracle cure..."), and "We're Not Gonna Take It" ("If you want to follow me, you've got to play pinball...").

Stay tuned for part 2, when our quiz continues to--predictably--the SECOND half of the album!
