Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which band was Davy Jones a member of between 1966 and 1970?

Answer: The Monkees

The Monkees consisted of Americans, Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork and Englishman Jones. The band was put together purely for the situation comedy series "The Monkees" (1966-68) and as such is considered one of the first manufactured bands, paving the way for other teen idols such as Backstreet Boys, New Kids On The Block and 'N Sync.
2. Jones began his career as an actor, not a musician and made his screen debut in 1960 in the "BBC Sunday-Night Play" show. He followed this in 1961 with a role in which long running UK TV show?

Answer: Coronation Street

Jones appeared in just one episode of "Coronation Street" in 1961, playing the part of Colin Lomax, grandson to on screen battle-axe, Ena Sharples. In the episode, which was just the 25th of the long running show, Ena looks after her grandson for the day.

While he is with her, she demands he tell her what the family have been saying about her, and when Colin tells her, she tells him to go and buy her a will form so she can cut Madge, her daughter and Colin's aunt, out of her will.
3. Davy Jones briefly quit acting when he was 14, devoting his time to which new career?

Answer: Jockey

Jones was a talented jockey, having an apprenticeship with Newmarket trainer Basil Foster when he was 15. Ironically, Foster was the man that pushed Jones back into show business, forfeiting both their horse racing dreams as he always felt Jones could be a star. Jones always retained a love for horses and finally rode his first winner aged 51 in 1996 at an amateur race, held at Lingfield racecourse.

When Jones died in February 2012, Lingfield renamed two races at their March meeting in his memory.

These were called the "Hey Hey We're The Monkees Handicap" and the "In Memory of Davy Jones Selling Stakes".
4. In 1960, Jones appeared in which West End stage show, alternating a starring role with future Genesis drummer, Phil Collins?

Answer: Oliver!

Jones and Collins were not the only future stars to appear in "Oliver!" (1960) as Steve Marriott, later to be known as guitarist for Small Faces, also alternated the role of the Artful Dodger with the pair. Also in the show were Tony Robinson, later to find fame as Baldrick on TV show "Blackadder" (1983-89) and Michael Cashman, who would later become The Lord Cashman, following his political career and elevation to the House of Lords.
5. Following West End success, the 1960s stage show in which Jones was a cast member moved to Broadway and also secured a spot on an episode of TV's "Ed Sullivan Show" (1948-1971). This episode was the same episode that saw which British band appear?

Answer: The Beatles

The cast of "Oliver!" (1960) appeared on the show to perform two numbers, "I'd Do Anything" and "As Long as He Needs Me" on February 9, 1964. This date will always be remembered by music fans though, not for Davy Jones on TV, but as the date when 73 million viewers tuned in to see the start of the "British invasion".
Jones, after watching the Beatles from the side of the stage is reported to have said, "I saw the girls going crazy, and I said to myself, this is it, I want a piece of that."
6. Jones first achieved music success in USA when which single from 1965 entered the Billboard Hot 100?

Answer: What Are We Going To Do?

All of the possible answers were tracks found on Davy Jones' first solo album, "David Jones" (1965) and although "Dream Girl" was a top ten hit in Australia and his cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" reached the top 60 in the country, neither charted in USA.
Even though "What Are We Going To Do?" was his first American hit, it is largely forgotten as it scraped into the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 93, and only reached number 88 in Australia, where he was building quite a following.
Jones would have to wait until 1971 to have his biggest selling solo hit on the Billboard Hot 100, when "Rainy Jane" peaked at number 52.
7. In 1997, Jones appeared as himself on which popular TV show, serenading Melissa Joan Hart with "(I'll) Love You Forever" (1987)?

Answer: Sabrina, the Teenage Witch

Jones appeared in the season two episode, "Dante's Inferno" (1997), in which Sabrina and Harvey are made to date other people. As part of the subplot, Sabrina's aunt Hilda is struck down with a case of "punnitis" which causes everything she says to come true. Enter Davy Jones as a result of her illness and the perfect antidote to Sabrina's bad dating experience with Dante.
The episode ends with Jones teaching Sabrina (Melissa Joan Hart), Aunt Hilda (Caroline Rhea), and Aunt Zelda (Beth Broderick) how to do the famous Monkee walk.
8. In 2016, four years after Davy Jones' death, the Monkees released the "Good Times!" album. On how many of the albums 13 tracks did Jones sing lead vocals?

Answer: One

Micky Dolenz took most of the lead vocal duties, with Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith having a couple of tracks each, but "Love to Love" was all Jones on lead vocals.
The track is quite unique as the track was originally recorded in 1967 but Jones then re-recorded his vocals in 1969 for "The Monkees Present" album. For inclusion on the "Good Times!" album, Dolenz and Tork did new backing vocals, so the song we hear had the instrumental track recorded in 1967, the lead vocal track in 1969, and backing vocal track in 2016.
9. In 2009, Davy Jones appeared in which TV show, voicing the character of Davy Jones in his infamous under water locker?

Answer: SpongeBob SquarePants

"SpongeBob" is a weird show at the best of times, and to attempt a synopsis which makes sense is quite daunting. In the episode "SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One" (2009), SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Sandy and Mr Krabs are all marooned far from Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward manage to surf back home with the help of Jack Kahuna Laguna (voiced by Johnny Depp), while Mr Krabbs gets into a fight with The Flying Dutchman.
In the ensuing melee, the Dutchman is sent to Davy Jones' Locker, where Jones tortures him with his smelly socks.
Bizarre eh?
10. In 1997, Jones joined The Edge on stage to take over vocal duties on which song, performed regularly on U2's PopMart tour?

Answer: Daydream Believer

As Bono left the stage, The Edge unstrapped his guitar and began to sing "Daydream Believer", inviting Jones to take over after the first verse. Jones was in his element, performing this timeless classic in front of 70,000 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum and the fans clearly felt the same as Jones as they belted the song out, word perfect with him.
