Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Tracks Of My Tears

Answer: Smokey Robinson

Yes, Linda Ronstadt had a hit with this song in 1975. But the song was written and recorded ten years earlier by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. And that's the artist you need to make the puzzle work out correctly.
2. I Shot The Sheriff

Answer: Bob Marley

Bob Marley wrote and recorded this song with "The Wailers" in 1973. The lyric "Every time I plant a seed / He said, 'Kill it before it grow'" was allegedly referring to his opposition to his girlfriend using birth control. Eric Clapton's version the following year was much more successful on the charts.
3. Blue Bayou

Answer: Linda Ronstadt

This song was written and recorded by Roy Orbison. But the match you need here is the version by the marvellous Linda Ronstadt, who mostly did covers of previous hit songs. What a voice!
4. I'm A Man

Answer: Spencer Davis Group

Amazing that Steve Winwood was just a teenager when he belted out the vocal on this song! Chicago also had a big hit with the cover on their debut album. (Percussion break!!)
5. That'll Be The Day

Answer: Buddy Holly

Written and recorded by Buddy Holly, and of course a great version later by Miss Ronstadt. Another interesting fact: This was the first song recorded (as a demo disc) by a group called "The Quarrymen". You might know them better by the name they took later... "The Beatles"!
6. After Midnight

Answer: Eric Clapton

Kind of a "tag team" on this song. J.J. Cale wrote it, and recorded it in 1966. After Clapton's big hit with the song in 1970, J.J. re-recorded it for a new album in 1972. Then in 1987, Eric re-recorded it for a beer commercial, and decided to release it again!
7. With A Little Help From My Friends

Answer: Joe Cocker

Personally, I can think of only two Beatles songs for which a cover version was better than the original: this one by Joe Cocker, and "Got To Get You Into My Life" by Earth, Wind & Fire. The song was ranked number 311 on "Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
8. Oh, Pretty Woman

Answer: Roy Orbison

The closest I can come to a "claim to fame": Our high school band opened for Roy Orbison and Ray Stevens at a show in south Texas. Those were the days! The title was inspired by Orbison's wife, Claudette and co-written by Bill Dees.
9. Got To Get You Into My Life

Answer: The Beatles

Had to put this one in to try and throw you off for EW&F. What to say about The Beatles? Just the greatest band ever!! This song was re-released as a single in 1976.
10. How Sweet It Is

Answer: James Taylor

JT covered this 1964 Marvin Gaye R&B hit on his 1975 album "Gorilla". The success of this song encouraged James to do softer versions of several more R&B tunes, such as "Handy Man" and "Up On The Roof".
11. You're The Inspiration

Answer: Chicago

I thought this title might throw you off the track, since it could be a ballad or R&B tune. But Chicago fans would surely remember this as one of their more "mellow" songs.
12. I Will Always Love You

Answer: Dolly Parton

Miss Dolly wrote this song about parting ways with her long-time collaborator Porter Wagoner. It was a number one hit for her on the country charts, and hit number one again when including in the movie version of "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas". Of course Whitney Houston also had a big hit with the song; but more about her later.
13. You've Got A Friend

Answer: Carole King

Carole King and James Taylor actually recorded both of their hit versions of this song in the same session, with some of the same musicians! She said the inspiration for the song was a line from JT's "Fire and Rain": "I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend."
14. Saving All My Love For You

Answer: Whitney Houston

What an incredible voice! And gone from us much too soon. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. This was her first number one hit,
15. After The Love Is Gone

Answer: Earth, Wind & Fire

My favorite of many great EW&F songs. It was written by three music industry giants: David Foster, Jay Graydon, and Bill Champlin. A few other artists tried covers of the tune, but I'm sure they all fell short of the original!
