Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which Irish city was the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest held?

Answer: Dublin

The 1971 competition took place in the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, Ireland. The Gaiety, built in 1871, is the venue often used for operas and musicals.
2. Which country won the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Monaco

Monaco won with their entry "Un banc, un arbre, une rue" ("A Bench, A Tree, A Street"). This was the first win for Monaco, who won by twelve points. Interestingly, the song was written by French composers, conducted by a French conductor and sung in French by a French singer - who had never been to Monaco.
3. The UK's 1971 entry was a song called "Jack In The Box". Who sang it?

Answer: Clodagh Rodgers

Clodagh Rodgers was born in Ulster, Northern Ireland. She became a star in 1969 with her songs "Come Back and Shake Me" and "Goodnight Midnight".

Alma Cogan was a popular British singer of the 1950s and 1960s. I made up the other two options.
4. There were two big changes with the 1971 Eurovision contest. One was the method of scoring. What was the other?

Answer: Entries no longer restricted to soloists or duets

In previous years, all Eurovision entries had to be sung either by a solo singer or a duet. This year that rule was dropped, allowing groups of up to six singers to perform an entry.

The scoring change caused some problems. Each country had two judges - one over the age of 25, one under, and each could give each song between one and five points. Needless to say, some juries awarded very few points, in hopes that it would keep other entries from getting more points than theirs.
5. The current rules stated that each country had to sing in their own official language - but there are a number of countries with more than one official language. How many entries in the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest were sung entirely in French?

Answer: four

Four countries sang their entries in French this year. They were

France - "Un jardin sur la terre" ("A Garden on Earth")
Luxembourg - "Pomme, pomme, pomme" ("Apple, Apple, Apple")
Monaco - "Un banc, un arbre, une rue" ("A Bench, A Tree, A Seat") and
Switzerland - "Les illusions de nos vingt ans" ("The Illusions of Our Youth")
6. For one country, the 1971 contest was their first. Which country had its debut at the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Malta

It was Malta. Malta has had a rather spotty history of entering the competition, with entries three times in the 1970s, then none in the 1980s.
7. One or more countries returned to Eurovision after staying out for at least one year. How many returned this year?

Answer: five

Five countries returned after an absence from the competition. They were Austria (after an absence of two years), Finland (one year), Norway (one year), Portugal (one year) and Sweden (one year).
8. Who was the presenter at the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Bernadette Ni Ghallchoir

Bernadette Ni Ghallchoir presented the contest. Siobhan McGarry, Rose Neill and Fionnuala Sweeney are all Irish television presenters.
9. There's always a halftime - what was the entertainment for the halftime of the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Bunratty Castle Entertainers

The Bunratty Castle Entertainers were, apparently, the singers from the Bunratty Castle Medieval Banquet. They entertain the guests with medieval and traditional Irish songs and instrumentals. One presumes they entertained the Eurovision audience with something similar...

Dave Allen was an Irish comedian. Julia Clifford was a fiddler specialising in traditional Irish music. Pride of Erin is a non-profit organisation teaching Irish folk dance.
10. Eighteen countries vied for the 1971 Eurovision Song crown. That there should have been a first position, second position, third etc, all the way to 18th, right? Wrong - or is it? How many countries, if any, tied for position?

Answer: four

Four countries tied for position. They were Sweden and The Netherlands in sixth place and Belgium and Yugoslavia in fourteenth.
