Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What year was Pavement formed?

Answer: 1989

Pavement released their first EP, "Slay Tracks", the same year.
2. What label released Pavement's first three EPs?

Answer: Drag City

Pavement first recorded for Drag City before signing to Matador after the recording of Slanted & Enchanted.
3. What is Pavement guitarist Scott Kannberg's alter ego?

Answer: Spiral Stairs

I'd be interested to know exactly where that name came from.
4. Which of these members was not present in Pavement's final lineup?

Answer: Gary Young

Nastanovich played "percussion" - he was hired as a backup drummer as Gary became increasingly unreliable on stage. Mark Ibold, the bass player, was recruited some time around the recording of "S+E" but did not appear on an album until 1994's "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain." Steve West, an altogether inferior if more reliable timekeeper if you ask me, was recruited as Gary Young's replacement in 1993.
5. How many full-length studio albums did Pavement release?

Answer: Five

Wish they'd done ten of 'em.
6. What Pavement idols did "Brighten the Corners" coproducer Mitch Easter produce on their 1983 debut album?

Answer: R.E.M.

R.E.M.'s debut album "Murmur" was produced by Easter with Don Dixon. Wonderful record.
7. What is the name of Pavement leader Stephen Malkmus's new band?

Answer: The Jicks

Actually, my band is called the Wufs, and I came up with the name before I ever heard about the Jicks. Still, I think it's pretty cool that Malkmus and I both made up words to name our bands.
8. In what Northern California city did Pavement form?

Answer: Stockton

Portland is in Oregon, silly.
9. Who produced Pavement's final studio album?

Answer: Nigel Godrich

"Crooked Rain" and "Slanted" were both self produced, and Goggin worked with the band on both "Wowee Zowee" and "Brighten the Corners". Mitch Easter coproduced only the latter album.
10. Name one of the other hit bands/artists Nigel Godrich produced.

Answer: Radiohead

Godrich mixed (but didn't produce) some stuff by R.E.M. & Imbruglia (including "Torn"!) He has never, to my knowledge, worked with Wilco.
11. "Terror Twilight" (the album produced by Godrich) went top 20 in Japan.

Answer: True

I believe it hit #16.
12. What year did Pavement OFFICIALLY split up?

Answer: 2000

Pavement announced at their final concert in England in November of '99 that it was to be their last show. For most of the next year, however, the word from Matador was that the band was on "hiatus". Malkmus finally broke it to Spin magazine in late 2000 that Pavement was no more.
13. What is the title of Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks' album, released in March of 2003?

Answer: Pig Lib

"Stephen Malkmus" was the title of his debut, which was originally supposed to be called "Swedish Reggae" before Matador balked. The Jicks weren't credited until the new album, "Pig Lib".
14. Name the studio at which Pavement recorded their first 3 EPs and "Slanted and Enchanted".

Answer: Louder Than You Think

Louder Than You Think was the 8-track studio owned by Gary Young, who soon became the group's drummer. Treble Kicker is the company which publishes Malkmus's songs.
15. What was the name of Pavement's only Top 10 Modern Rock hit?

Answer: Cut Your Hair

"Cut Your Hair" is great, but "Range Life" is greater.
