Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song on the Cruxshadows' "Wishfire" CD has the chorus "Don't blame me, I'm just the messenger!"?

Answer: Binary

The gothic dance band Cruxshadows' 2002 release, "Wishfire", is more dance-oriented then ever before. The psuedo trance song "Binary" has the very intense chorus saying, "Don't blame me" and is rumored to be about the film "The Matrix". There is no song called "The Messenger" on any Cruxshadows CD's, either.
2. What oldies song did Rasputina cover on a 2001 B-side?

Answer: You Don't Own Me

The gothic band called Rasputina often combines haunting melodies with string arrangements. They have also worked with Marilyn Manson in the past, though he isn't quite goth. "You Don't Own Me" was one of the biggest surprises I have ever heard them do.
3. What Voltaire CD was released in 2002?

Answer: Boo Hoo!

"Boo Hoo" is a heartbreaking CD by Voltaire, who needed to get out his emotions after a bad breakup with his girlfriend of 12 years.
4. Rhys Fulbur recently did a project in 2002 working with singers Poe, Sinead O'Connor, and Arabic singer Chemda. What is Rhys' 2002 project called?

Answer: Conjure One

Rhys Fulbur recently left Frontline Assembly and Delerium to produce and work with various artists like Charlotte Church and Josh Groban, and also plays keyboards on Josh Groban's new CD/DVD set. He also formed Conjure One in the process and released his first self-titled release in September of 2002.

In 2003 Rhys rejoined Bill Leeb to complete the Delerium lineup after a five year hiatus.
5. Illusionist Chriss Angel teamed up with what gothic/industrial artist for his CD "World Of Illusion"?

Answer: Klay Scott

Klay Scott is better known for his work with Circle Of Dust and will be coming in full circle with his newest band, Celldweller. He also has worked with Argyle Park, AP2, Klank, Chatterbox, and Prong. His music also has been featured in films and TV shows like "K-911" and MTV's "Tough Enough" series; he also did the theme song to MTV's "Extreme Sports" show.
6. From the CD "Vampire The Masquerade: Music From The Succubus Club", which band represented the Ravnos clan?

Answer: Cruxshadows

The clan was represented by The Cruxshadows. While having one of their best songs ever with their track "Deception", the remainder of the disc just doesn't live up to the hype, though it has an all-star track listing!
7. What Gary Numan CD lost distribution rights in the U.S. due to lack of interest, only to have a comic book company buy the rights and have it re-released and renamed "Dawn"?

Answer: Sacrifice

"Sacrifice" was the first of his changing musical style; only after the success of "Exile" did the makers of the comic book "Dawn" approach Numan about re-releasing his "Sacrifice" disc for them.
8. What was the only gothic band to play the first Lollapalooza tour?

Answer: Siouxsie and The Banshees

Sadly, the only band in this list to make a Lollapalooza tour was Siouxsie and The Banshees, and that was due to her already touring for her new release, "Peek A Boo", at the time.
9. Since Siouxsie was mentioned in the last question, what is her newest project that takes on a much more varied sound then her days with The Banshees?

Answer: The Creatures

The Creatures are often much more dance-oriented then the Banshees ever were.
10. What Lycia CD was released in 2002?

Answer: Tripping Back Into Broken Days

The etherial band Lycia released "Tripping Back Into Broken Days" in 2002, "Burning Circle And The Dirt" came out in 1995, and "Estrella" came out in 1998. The "Compilation Appearances" disc was released in 2001.
11. On Cradle of Filth's CD "Bitter Suites To Succubi", what song by Sisters of Mercy did they cover?

Answer: No Time To Cry

They did an amazing job on the cover of "No Time To Cry". The remainder of the CD stays up to par, if you can handle Daney's vocals through an entire CD. All Sisters of Mercy songs listed appear on their "First, Last And Always" CD.
12. On the Cleopatra sampler release "Darkwave: Music Of The Shadows Volume 2", what song does Love Spirals Downward open the CD with?

Answer: Forgo

All the songs are also on the CD by varied artists, but "Forgo" is the one that opens the disc up with a somewhat haunting song that strays a bit from their normal sound. Probably one of the better samplers out there. Many of the bands on it have now moved from Cleopatra to other record labels, but most went to the Projekt label.
13. This Ascension lost their recording deal with Tess Records. What gothic label took over their record deal and also re-released their back catalogue?

Answer: Projekt

Projekt bought and re-released their CD's "Light And Shade", "Tears In Rain", and "Sever". "Gothik" and "Death For Life" are both gothic samplers.
14. What CD by Mephisto Waltz featured their cover of The Rolling Stones song "Paint it Black"?

Answer: The Eternal Deep

"The Eternal Deep" is one of the very first gothic CD's I've ever bought. It's very dark in many spots and the cover of "Paint it Black" is the best one I have ever heard!
15. What Sisters Of Mercy song did The Shroud cover on the "Gothic Divas" compilation?

Answer: Alice

Their cover of "Alice" also appeared on the Sisters of Mercy tribute CD, which was re-released in mid-2001. The Sisters of Mercy's original version of "Lucretia My Reflection" appears on the "Floodland" release, and "Emma" and "Jolene" were both rare B-sides; "Jolene" actually was done live and was originally done by Dolly Parton.
16. What song has Bella Morte become well known for covering in almost all of their concerts and is available on their website to download for free?

Answer: My Heart Will Go On

Of all these love songs, the only one that they have done live is Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On". So go to www.bellamorte.com and get the song! Its free!
17. What song by The Last Dance appeared as a mix on the "Death For Life: A Gothic Tribute For AIDS"?

Answer: Flesh

The Last Dance opens the "Death For Life" CD with the track "Flesh". "Do You Believe In Angels?" is one of the greatest songs ever recorded in the world of gothic music. "Ave Maria" was a B-side from the band Cruxshadows.
18. Projekt records has a deal with two retailers for exclusive gothic and etherial sampler CD's. The first is Hot Topic and the second is whom?

Answer: Borders Books And Music

Projekt records has released several discs for Borders at a bargain price of between $3.99 to $5.99 (US) to promote many of their up-and-coming artists.
19. What gothic band did a remix of the song "Witches" for Switchblade Symphony's "Sinister Nostalgia" remix release?

Answer: Temple of Rain

The only artist listed that made remixes for Switchblade Symphony was "Temple Of Rain".
20. What genre did gothic originally derive from?

Answer: Punk

Gothic first formed from post-punk bands, with Bauhaus being the first. Others that followed were The Cult, Siouxie and The Banshees, and even The Cure, which began evolving out of the Punk sound after their debut 12" release.
