"Three Steps To Heaven" was the second posthumous UK number one hit. The first was "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" by Eddie's friend and fellow American Buddy Holly. Eddie Cochran was killed in a one vehicle car crash in Wiltshire UK barely a month before, in which singer Gene Vincent and Eddie's fiance Sharon Sheeley (writer of "Poor Little Fool" for Ricky Nelson) were injured.

Kennedy's PT boat was cut in two by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri. Kennedy's back trouble may have begun at this time with the long swims between islands to find food and avoid Japanese troops.
