"I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning"- Bright Eyes Quiz

This quiz is about the Bright Eyes album "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning," which is a masterpiece by the way! One or two questions are about Bright Eyes in general though. I only saw one Bright Eyes quiz so I thought I'd give making my own a go.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the lead singer of Bright Eyes?

Answer: Conor Oberst

Conor Oberst was born in 1980 and has been recording songs since he was 13!
2. Finish the lyric: "I got a flask inside my pocket we can share it on the train. And if you promise to stay conscious I will try and do the same. We might die from medication but..."

Answer: we sure killed all the pain

This is from the song "Lua"...there's been lots of discussion regarding the meaning of this song. Some people believe it's about an eating disorder (Bulima probably)"You just keep goin to the bathroom always say you'll be right back." The other idea, what I personally think, is that its about drug use and being an addict(cocaine and alcohol), but listen for yourself and decide.
3. What song is this lyric from? "So I will find my fears and face them, or I will cower like a dog. I will kick and scream or kneel and plead. I'll fight like hell to hide that I've given up."

Answer: Another Travelin' Song

"Rolling Stone" magazine has called Oberst "rock's boy genius".
4. Whose beautiful female voice can be heard on several songs such as "We Are Nowhere And It's Now" and "Landlocked Blues"?

Answer: Emmylou Harris

Emmylou Harris (born April 2, 1947) is a country music singer, songwriter and musician from Birmingham, Alabama, USA.
5. What "indie" record label is the lead singer one of the founders of?

Answer: Saddle Creek

Artists on Saddle Creek include Cursive, Desaparecidos, The Faint, Rilo Kiley, Bright Eyes, Son Ambulance, Azure Ray, The Good Life, and Sorry About Dresden, among others.
6. Which song is this lyric from?(one of my favorites!)"I could have been a famous singer if I had someone else's voice. But failures always sounded better."

Answer: Road to Joy

At fourteen years of age, Oberst was singer and guitarist of Commander Venus, an indie rock band, in 1994. The former members of Commander Venus, Ben Armstrong, Robb Nansel (who now runs Saddle Creek) and Todd Baechle of The Faint, would later go on to feature in many Saddle Creek recording groups.
7. At the beginning of the album in the very first song, there's an intro type monologue. What is the very first line you hear?

Answer: So there was this woman and she was on an airplane, and she was flying to meet her fiancé seaming high above the largest ocean on planet Earth

I've listened to this cd so many times that I've memerized the intro...here it goes, completely from memory.."So there was this woman and she was on an airplane, and she was flying to meet her fiancé seaming high above the largest ocean on planet Earth.

She was seated next to this man who she had tried to start conversations, but the only thing she had really heard him say was to order his Bloody Mary. She was sitting there and she was reading this really arduous magazine article about a third world country that she couldn't even pronounce the name of. And she was feeling very bored and despondent. And then suddenly there was this huge mechanical failure and one of the engines gave out, and they started just falling from thirty-thousand feet, and the pilot's on the microphone and he's saying 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry, oh my god, I'm sorry' and apologizing. And she looks at the man and says 'Where are we going?' and he looks at her and he says 'We're going to a party.

It's a birthday party. It's your birthday party. Happy birthday darlin. We love you very, very, very, very, very, very, very much.' And then he starts humming this little tune, it goes something like this: 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4" -wow, I have way too much free time.
8. Which song is this lyric from? "And you wrote bad checks to just to fill your arm. I was young enough, I still believed in war. So let the poets cry themselves to sleep."

Answer: Poison Oak

After Commander Venus disbanded in 1997, Oberst and some friends started a new project--Park Ave.--with the intention of writing pop music. Oberst decided to learn to play drums, and Clark Baechle, the drummer from The Faint, joined up to learn how to play guitar.

They asked three girlfriends to help round out the lineup on vocals, bass and keyboards. None of them knew how to play their instruments either. Park Ave. released a split 7" with The Wrens, had two songs on a Saddle Creek sampler CD, and put out a full-length of four-track recordings as well.

When one of its members moved to London, Park Ave. broke up.
9. I love the artwork for the album. It's very simple and artistic. Who made the artwork/patchwork?

Answer: Zack Nipper

ZACK NIPPER ALBUM ARTWORK

Bright Eyes - "Lua"...Artwork, Lettering
Bright Eyes - "There Is No Beginning to the Story"...Scenery
Desaparecidos - "Read Music/Speak Spanish"...Artwork
Bright Eyes - "Every Day and Every Night"...Art Direction
Bright Eyes - "Fevers & Mirrors"...Design
10. Yeah, last question!! On this one you need to tell me the song AND finish the lyric.(I'm getting crafty with my questions, watch out, haha) "But I still sing Glory from my lowest. And I will say..."

Answer: peace to the people I meet - "Train Under Water"

Piece of advice: Conor Oberst is brilliant and I strongly recommend checking out other bands and albums he's contributed to! He's made lots of different types of music...check out anything done by Bright Eyes, Desaparecidos, or Park Ave...
