Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Joe hails from New York. Which city was he born in?

Answer: Utica

Utica's location is near the Mohawk River. It had an old Iroquois Indian crossroads which made trade easier. It was first settled by Europeans in the 18th century and had the largest migration of Italians between 1880 and 1920. Organized crime was rife, but the immigrants found jobs in textile, brickyards and construction.

The city now has a vast mixture of cultures from Welsh to Bosnian.
2. Joe's dad owned and ran a guitar shop. How old was Joe when he first picked up a guitar?

Answer: Four years old

At twelve years old, he opened for B.B. King and this blues virtuoso gave him so much advice that the young Joe thought he could do this for the rest of his life. He was playing Jimi Hendrix songs note for note and later on was drawn to the sounds of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Free.
3. On Joe's tour in 2012 we were introduced to his long distance Scottish girlfriend. Who was she?

Answer: Sandi Thom

Sandi Thom was born in Banff, Aberdeenshire and had a hit with "I wish I was a Punk Rocker" in 2006. Having recently seen Joe in concert, I had read that she was his support act but it turned out that she was his girlfriend and she came on for one number.

She has a brilliant strong singing voice and can really play her acoustic guitar. Can't help thinking that their prodigy would be mega talented.
4. Joe's band on the 2012 tour, had the most incredible drummer. I would rate him as one of the best drummers I have ever had the pleasure of watching. He had a great rapport with Joe on stage and their playoffs were terrific. Do you know his name?

Answer: Tal Bergman

Tal Bergman has played with the likes of Simple Minds, Chaka Khan and Peter Cetera. He can play along with all of the musical types such as Hard Rock, Funk, Jazz & R&B.
5. Joe has just brought out a new DVD called "Beacon Theatre". Which fantastic rock/blues vocalist who started in the seventies, joined him on stage?

Answer: Paul Rodgers

Paul Rodgers, "The Voice of Rock" did a few of his Free numbers with Joe using the late Paul Kossoff's guitar. "Mr Big", "Walk in my Shadow" and "Fire and Water". Superb!
6. Joe was born on 8th May, 1977. Which blues great would have been 66 on that day?

Answer: Robert Johnson

Cream, with Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce & Ginger Baker, did a cover of Robert Johnson's "Cross Road Blues" and turned it into a rock/blues anthem called "Crossroads". It was initially thought that Johnson was singing about selling his soul to the devil to be able to play so good, but it is now thought that it was about the fear the blacks felt when they were discovered out alone at night.
7. On Joe's 2006 album, "You and Me", his drummer Jason Bonham was the son of one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. What seventies rock band did Jason's father play with?

Answer: Led Zeppelin

John Bonham sadly died in September, 1980. His son Jason has been playing drums since he was five and was a member of a band at age seventeen. Joe Bonamassa has a big connection to Led Zeppelin and covers a lot of their songs in his inimitable style.
8. Joe has many guitars, he mentioned in a recent interview that his Gibson Les Paul was his favourite. What did he said it did?

Answer: "It howls"

The Gibson Les Paul is and was the favourite guitar of many great guitarists. From Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton through to now sadly deceased, Gary Moore & the great Paul Kossoff. Joe repeatedly says "It Howls"!
9. Joe's incredible live performances are electrifying and he does great covers of a lot of Free/Bad Company and Led Zeppelin. He did a fantastic nine minute version of Zeppelin's "Tea For One", who was the vocalist on this track?

Answer: Doug Henthorn

Doug Henthorn of the band Healing Sixes, was the vocalist. His mellow voice was perfect for this bluesy number and Joe's guitar playing is just spectacular. It's on Joe's album "You and Me" and is a track from Led Zeppelin's "Presence" album. As much as I am a huge fan of Zeppelin, I think Joe's version is better.
10. Joe's tenth album was called "Ballad of John Henry". Who was John Henry?

Answer: An American folk hero

John Henry was a steel driver who worked on the construction of the railroads in the nineteenth century. There have been many songs about him and how he had a race with a steam powered hammer. He was supposedly a black man of extraordinary strength who collapsed and died as he beat the machine, with his hammer in his hand.
