Answer: Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath is the the first metal band officially. They were formed in 1968 and they released their self-titled debut album in 1970, which was the "birth" of heavy metal. They split up in 2017.

The original members were The Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne, on vocals, Bill Ward on the drums, Geezer Butler on the bass and the only member who has stayed with the band the whole time, Tony Iommi, who is often called, "The Godfather of Heavy Metal". But during the five decades, a lot of stars were part of the band, such as Ronnie James Dio, Ian Gillan, Cozy Powell, Tony Martin and Eric Singer.

They released nineteen studio albums. Arguably, their most famous album is "Paranoid" which was released in 1970. "Master of Reality was released in 1971, "Sabotage" was in 1975 and "Mob Rules" was released in 1981.

Motörhead was formed in 1975 by the god, Lemmy Kilmister. They released twenty-two studio albums, ten live recordings, twelve compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning forty years. They split up in 2015 when Lemmy passed away.

The final line-up was Lemmy Kilmister on vocals and the bass, Phil Campbell on the guitar and former King Diamond drummer, Mikkey Dee, on the drums, but a lot of other musicians were in the band, like "Philthy Animal" Taylor, Eddie Clark, Michael Burston and Pete Gill.

Their most famous album was "Ace of Spades".

Judas Priest was formed in 1969 in Birmingham. They released their first album, "Rocka Rolla" in 1974. They are often credited as a New Wave of British Heavy Metal band, but in fact they are not, because NWOBHM started in the late 70s and the early 80s. They're often called "Metalgods".

The current line-up consists of vocalist Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner, bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis.

Their most famous album is "British Steel" which was released in 1980.

Metallica is an American thrash metal band. The band was formed in 1981 by vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich.

Their most well-known line-up featured James Hetfield on vocals and rhythm guitar, Cliff Burton on the bass, Lars Ulrich on the drums and Kirk Hammett on the lead guitar, but a lot of other rockstars were part of the band, like Dave Mustaine, Jason Newsted and Rob Trujillo.

Their most famous album was "Master of Puppets" which was released in 1985 as their third studio album.

Dio was Ronnie James Dio's solo band, which was formed by him in 1982 after he left Black Sabbath. They released ten studio albums and the band was working until the passing away of the metalgod Ronnie James Dio in 2010.

The different line-ups of the band included Vinny Appice, Vivian Campbell, Tracy G, Craig Goldy and many others.

Their most famous album was their debut, "Holy Diver" followed by the amazing albums, "The Last in Line" and "Sacred Heart".

John "Ozzy" Osbourne was born on the third day of December 1948. He was one of the original members of Black Sabbath. He got kicked out in 1979 and he formed his solo band right after that. The debut album of his band was released in 1980 and it was called "Blizzard of Ozz".

His solo band featured a lot of guitarists in it. First, his guitarist was Randy Rhoads and he played on the first two albums, but he died in a plane crash in 1982, on the supporting tour of "Diary of a Madman". After his passing away, Jake E. Lee, Zakk Wylde and Gus G were in the band, too.

Answer: Megadeth

Megadeth was formed in 1983 by bassist David Ellefson and guitarist Dave Mustain after he got kicked out of Metallica. They're one of the Big Four of Thrash Metal, along with Anthrax, Slayer and Metallica.

They gave out their debut album, "Killing is My Business... And Business is Good" in 1984. Probably, they're most known for their 1990 album "Rust in Peace". Dave Mustaine was the only member who has played on all of their albums.

Rainbow, or Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, was formed in 1975, by Ritchie Blackmore, after he left Deep Purple. He formed the band with the members of Elf, including Ronnie James Dio. The first three albums, "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow", "Rising", and "Long Live Rock and Roll", were made with Dio on vocals, but he left the band in 1978.

After Dio left, many other singers were in the band, such as Graham Bonett and Joe Lynn Turner. Sometimes, the band is credited as a neoclassical metal band.

Overkill is an American thrash metal band, formed in 1980 in New Jersey, by bassist D. D. Verni and vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth. They were the only members who were on all of their albums. They are one of the most well-known and respected thrash metal bands.

Their debut album, "Feel the Fire" came out in 1985. Arguably, their most famous albums are the 1989 "The Years of Decay" and the 1991 "Horrorscope".

Iron Maiden is one of the most popular and famous metal bands. They were formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris.

They released their self-titled debut album in 1980. The first two of their albums were made with singer Paul Di'Annno, but he got kicked out in 1982 and Bruce Dickinson replaced him.

Their most famous album is "The Number of the Beast".

Answer: Mercyful Fate

Mercyful was formed by guitarist Hank Shermann and vocalist King Diamond in 1981, Copenhagen. The band split up in 1984 after releasing two albums called "Melissa" and their most famous album, "Don't Break the Oath". King Diamond continued in solo with Michael Denner.

Four of the five original members reunited in 1992 and they have released five albums since then. The band is often considered to be part of the First Wave of Black Metal.

Kim Bendix Petersen, or best known as King Diamond, was born in 14 June in 1956. He is known for his unique and wide ranging singing voice. He often uses falsetto screams.

After he left Mercyful Fate in 1984, he funded his solo band. His debut album was released in 1986, called "Fatal Portrait", and his most well-known album was the follow-up, titled "Abigail". Most of his albums are concept albums, which means the songs on the albums are telling a big story.

Answer: Pantera

Pantera was formed in the early 80s by the Abott brothers, Dimebag Darell and Vinnie Paul. They are one of the most influential bands of all time. They are mostly known for their work during the 90s. They released their debut album "Metal Magic" in 1983 with Terry Glaze on vocals. The first four album of the band, and their whole 80s era, are mislabeled as glam metal. In fact they're much like a regular heavy metal or speed metal band.

Their first three albums were made with Terry Glaze, but Phil Anselmo replaced him in 1986. Their released the album "Power Metal" in 1988, but they didn't really gain any success, until the next album "Cowboys from Hell" in 1990. That's their most famous album, and with that album they gained huge popularity.

They split up in 2001, because of conflicts among the members. The amazing guitarist, Dimebag Darell was shot onstage by a crazy fan in 2004 and in 2018 Vinnie Paul has passed away, too, so unfortunately, there is no chance for a Pantera reunion.

Answer: Slayer

Slayer was formed in 1981 in Huntington Park, California by vocalist Tom Araya, guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman and drummer Dave Lombardo.

Their released their debut album, "Show No Mercy" in 1983. Arguably, their most famous album is the 1985 "Reign in Blood". Jeff Hanneman passed away in 2013 of flesh eating disease. They continued with Exodus guitarist, Gary Holt. They split up in 2019.

Type O Negative was formed by bassist and vocalist, Peter Steele in 1989, in Brooklyn, New York.

They released their debut album, "Slow, Deep and Hard" in 1991 and their most successful album was "Bloody Kisses", which was released in 1993. They split up in 2010, when Peeter Steele passed away of sepsis.
