Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Metallica was the quintessence of 1980's speed metal. Bassist Cliff Burton, who was killed in 1986 as a result of a bus accident in Sweden, defined the art of heavy metal bass. What band was he in when Lars Ulrich and James Hettfield recruited him?

Answer: Trauma

RIP Cliff. 10th February, 1962 to 27th September, 1986 was not long enough for the world to have you. Cliff may have only been here a short time, but he impacted the heavy metal world in ways that few have.
2. Paul Baloff, original lead singer for Exodus, was replaced by Steve Souza in 1987. What band did Souza leave to join Exodus?

Answer: The Legacy

Three years after Baloff left The Legacy, they changed the band name to Testament. Oddly enough, Testament fared better with Souza's replacement, Chuck Billy. Sadly, Paul Baloff, original lead singer for Exodus, passed away on 2nd February, 2002 from a massive stroke.
3. Ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted found his musical stock flourish as a member of what Arizona band?

Answer: Flotsam & Jetsam

Flotsam & Jetsam's debut album "Doomsday for the Deceiver" was released in 1986 on Metal Blade Records. After Newsted's departure to Metallica, the band left Metal Blade Records and joined Metallica's label, Elektra. "No Place for Disgrace" was recorded with Newsted replacement, Troy Gregory on bass. Gregory eventually left and joined Prong, being repalced with Jason Ward.
4. Whose debut album was "Show No Mercy"?

Answer: Slayer

Slayer was formed in 1982 by Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman. They recruited Tom Araya and Dave Lombardo and began playing clubs doing mostly covers of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest songs. The band quickly learned that they could harbor a larger fan base if they promoted images of Satanism and Nazism. Slayer has had nearly unparalleled success in the speed metal genre with such albums as "Reign in Blood" and "Seasons in the Abyss".

In the mid 1990's, Dave Lombardo left the band to form Grip, Inc., but has been reunited for several shows in 2003 due to Paul Bostaph's chronic bad back. Slayer is mum if the reunion will be permanant though.
5. Voivod made a name for themselves with their futuristic lyrics and unique music styles. Voivod became popular with the cover song and accompanying video for a Pink Floyd track. Do you remember this song that gained huge popularity on MTV's "Headbanger's Ball"?

Answer: Astronomy Domine

Voivod was one of the most influential bands out of Canada, gaining respect in both thrash metal and alternative metal. They have been listed as influences for such bands as Soundgarden and Faith No More. Jason Newsted was such a fan, he even joined the band for a brief period of time before joining Ozzy Osbourne.
6. Which band released the anti-political anthem "Surf Nicaragua"?

Answer: Sacred Reich

Sacred Reich was well known for their political lyrics, sometimes deadly serios, other times quite humorous. The album "Ignorance" is possibly the best album released by Sacred Reich.
7. What band's core members were once roadies for the Swiss band Celtic Frost?

Answer: Coroner

Tommy T. Baron and Marquis Marky were roadies for Celtic Frost when they decided to put together a band of their own. They got a vocalist in Ron Royce and became known as the thrash metal version of Rush, mainly because of their thinking man's lyrics and technically influenced music. Coroner never received huge international success, but have the respect of all musicians of their genre.
8. Nevermore began in the 1980's as a thrash metal outfit. What band disbanded and then had their singer, bassist and guitar player reform under the name Nevermore.

Answer: Sanctuary

Sanctuary had two popular albums in the mid 80's and even toured with Megadeth and Testament. As a matter of fact, Sanctuary was the pet project of Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine. Sanctuary formed in Seattle and soon was discovered by Mustaine who helped the band by getting them signed to CBS/Epic Records.
9. Trick question. What band had members Scott Ian, Charlie Benante, Dan Lilker and Billy Milano?

Answer: Stormtroopers of Death

S.O.D. was formed by Ian and Benante to combat boredom while Anthrax was on hiatus between touring and recording. Ex-Anthrax bassist Dan Lilker (then of Nuclear Assault) and Anthrax roadie Billy Milano on vocals rounded out the band. S.O.D. was just meant to be a goof, but they found near cult following and got together every chance they could to play together.
10. Another abbreviated band was D.R.I. Does anyone know what D.R.I. stood for?

Answer: Dirty Rotten Imbeciles

D.R.I. has moderate success as one of the first bands to incorporate thrash and hardcore. Their influence can be heard in Suicidal Tendencies and others.
