Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 9th season runner-up finisher on American Idol sings "Ridin' With The Radio": If you wanna sing a song ya' just sing it We ain't writing for the radio You wanna bring a friend you just bring 'em Then we can sing it in stereo You wanna sing a song sing a song

Answer: Crystal Bowersox

Crystal Bowersox was the runner up on the 2010 "American Idol". This country song is the opening track from her 2010 debut album "Farmer's Daughter." The song is about hitting the road, singing out music and defending old-school pop-music virtues:
"Whatever happened,
Oh, to good ol' Rock'n Roll
Whatever became of, hmm,
Rhythm and Blues and Soul
I'll do what it takes, now,
'Cause I just wanna
Make your mind feel good".
2. This influential rock group of the 60s re-emerged later in their career and produced "Around the Dial" from their 1982 album "Give the People What They Want."

Answer: The Kinks

"I've been around the dial so many times
But you're not there
Somebody tells me that
You've been taken off the air
Well, you were my favorite D.J.
Since I can't remember when
You always played the best records
You never followed any trend
F.M., A.M. where are you?
You gotta be out there somewhere on the dial
On the dial"

Critic Jim Connelly wrote about the song: ""Around The Dial" was upbeat, clever and and hooky, the best being when it went into a Beach Boys-inspired bridge with tuning static in the background.
3. This singer's debut single was "Don't Mess With the Radio" and she followed that with a Grammy-nominated song in 2002 with "Don't Mess With My Man". (She shares her name coincidentally with a skin care product).

Answer: Nivea

"Don't Mess With the Radio" came from American-born Nivea's eponymously titled debut album "Nivea." The song was a minor hit in the U.S. and elsewhere, except for Australia where it was a big hit.
"One, don't mess with the radio
Two, don't tell me which way to go
Three, just leave it up to me cause
Four, you ridin' with a pro."
4. From their 2nd album "Performance and Cocktails" comes the song "I Wouldn't Believe Your Radio" by this Welsh rock band formed in 1992.

Answer: The Stereophonics

The music video of the song was an homage to the 1969 Oscar-nominated film "Easy Rider." The band apparently was a big fan of the movie. The band members are depicted riding motorcycles through America, just like Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda.
"I wouldn't believe your wireless radio
If I had myself a flying giraffe
You'd have one in a box with a window."
5. Japanese singer Hikaru Utada released the title song of her album "Heart Station" in 2008. It reached #1 on Billboard's Hot Top Airplay chart, but only number two on Billboard's Japan Hot 100! What did the music video depict her doing?

Answer: wearing headphones while riding a subway train

The video shows her on that train surrounding by other subway riders standing still. They're all shown as dark silhouettes or very fast moving blurs.

Here's an English translation of the lyrics:
"On a chilly rainy day,
there's a couple with a story behind them,
sitting in a car with the radio on.
There's no sense in saying "Goodbye".
Don't you think it would be nice if we can someday meet again?
Can you hear my voice?
It's a "Heart Station" at 1 a.m. around midnight,
tuned automatically,
The secret hertz."
6. "I Bet You They Won't Play This Song on the Radio" is a comedic song that features funny sounding effects bleeping out imagined bad language in the lyrics. Sound FX such as jalopy car horns, "Cha-chings" raspberries, or "Yeeaagh!" You'd expect a wry and snarky song like this from the world-class comedy troupe Monty Python's Flying Circus, but which member performed it?

Answer: Eric Idle

The song was originally released on their album "Monty Python's Contractual Obligation Album. But it has also been added to their compilation album "The Final Rip Off" and the extended play "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life."

"I bet they won't play this song on the radio
I bet you they won't play this new (bleep) song
It's not that it's (bleep) or (bleep) controversial
Just that the (bleep)ing words are awfully strong
You can't say (bleep) on the radio
Or (bleep) or (bleep) or (bleep)"
7. "I Watched It All (On My Radio)" is from Lionel Cartwright's 1990 album of the same title in what music genre?

Answer: country

With a name like Lionel Cartwright, country was your safest bet. The song celebrates the times in a young boy's life when he had a transistor radio and would take it from under his pillow at bedtime and listen to the AM radio stations:
"I had a six-transistor when I was a kid
Under my pillow I kept it hid
When the lights went out and no one could see
Over the airwaves the world came to me
I'd go through the stations 'til I found a game
I knew how they played by the sounds of their names
The sluggers hit homers, those pitchers threw smoke
And I watched it all on my radio
At the crack of the bat, I knew how far it'd go
And I watched it all on my radio
I watched it all on my radio
When the ball game was over, the wrap-up complete
I'd search through the static 'til I found a beat
The Beatles and Credence, the Stones and the Byrds
You should have seen all the groups that I heard."
8. Here's a recording artist with two songs that fit the theme: "I Can't Live Without My Radio" from his 1985 debut album and also "Like a Radio" in which he teamed up with Ryan Leslie.

Answer: LL Cool J

LL Cool J (born James Todd Smith) released his debut album, "Radio" in 1985 and it was a bit hit. On December 3, 2017, LL Cool J became the first rapper to be recognized at the Kennedy Center Honors, one of America's highest honors in the field of performing arts. At 49-years-old, LL Cool J was the youngest-ever recipient of the honor at the time.
9. "Let it go, rebel radio That's the rebel radio sound That's the rebel, that's the rebel That's the rebel radio sound The radio plays the sound in your ear A calling to all, the message is clear." That's "Rebel Radio" by what British electronica band?

Answer: The Prodigy

The song is from The Prodigy's 2015 studio album "The Day is My Enemy" an album that was actually about 6 years in the making. That album title comes from a Cole Porter song called "All Through the Night", featuring the lyric lyrics "the day is my enemy, the night my friend".

The Prodigy almost called this album "Rebel Radio" but then they changed it and used "Rebel Radio" as the title of a song on the album.
10. And this quiz series would be a sham if it didn't include "Radio Song" by REM: "Hey, I can't find nothing on the radio Ah, yo turn to that station The world is collapsing Around our ears I turned up the radio But I can't hear it When I got to the house And I called you out I could tell that you had been crying, crying It's that same sing-song on the radio Makes me sad I meant to turn it off To say goodbye To leave in quiet, that radio song (see ya) Hey, hey, hey (ha-ha)" What now-classic album of theirs is the song from?

Answer: "Out of Time"

"Radio Song" has the famous rapper KRS-One in its intro. Peter Buck, the band's guitarist said in 1991 in Guitar School magazine: "When we wrote it [the song] out, we only had acoustic guitar, bongos, bass, organ, and a 12-string over the chorus. When we got to the studio we added drums, and I put down some funk guitars and we thought, 'Well, gee, now it's kind of a funk song.' And Michael suggested bringing in KRS, since he'd worked with him before.

It blows people's mind, and gets them thinking, 'Whoa, what's the rest of the record going to be like?' But then we go into 'Losing My Religion,' which is probably the most typical R.E.M.-sounding song on the record."
