Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Refuse to surrender / Strung out until ripped apart / Who dares, dares to condemn / All for nothing" - Which Portishead song features these words?

Answer: Mysterons

This song is from Portishead“s debut album "Dummy". They were formed in Bristol back in 1991, and their original lineup included producer Geoff Barrow and a young and shy lady, who used to sing in pubs, called Beth Gibbons. They were later joined by jazz guitarist Adrian Utley.
2. "Here in my reflecting / What more can I say? / For I am guilty / For the voice that I obey / Too scared to sacrifice a choice / Chosen for me" - In which song does Beth sing these lines?

Answer: Machine Gun

From the album "Third". Portishead got their name after a shipping town near Bristol where Barrow grew up.
3. "And it's been so long / That I can't confess / And it's been so wrong / Right now, so wrong" - Can you name that song?

Answer: Humming

From "Portishead". It is said that Barrow and Beth first met on a job scheme. What an odd start for such a great band, don't you think?
4. "After time the bitter taste / Of innocence decent or race / Scattered seeds, buried lives / Mysteries of our disguise revolve / Circumstance will decide" - What song might that be?

Answer: Sour Times

From "Dummy". Like Portishead, Massive Attack and Tricky also came from Bristol. They were all known as the "Bristol Big Three" and considered to be the genuine leaders of the Trip-Hop scene.
5. "The pace, the time / I can't survive / It's grinding down the view / Breaking out which way to choose / A choice I can't renew" - These lyrics are from which song?

Answer: We Carry On

From "Third". Portishead first got the attention of Go! Records as a result of their short film "How To Kill A Dead Man" (starring Beth and Geoff), an homage to 60s spy movies, and respective soundtrack authored by them. This historical piece of art can be found as bonus material in the "PNYC" DVD.
6. "Those who have seen the needles eye, now tread / Like a husk, from which all that was, now has fled / And the masks, that the monsters wear / To feed, upon their prey" - Which |P| song do these lyrics remind you of?

Answer: Wandering Star

From "Dummy". Actually, my favorite version of the song is the acoustic one. The videoclip for the acoustic version used footage from the band's tour, and is also an extra included in the New York gig DVD.
7. "Through the glory of life / I will scatter on the floor / Disappointed and sore / And in my thoughts I have bled / For the riddles I've been fed / Another lie moves over" - Can you name this beautiful song?

Answer: The Rip

From "Third". Portishead released "Dummy" in 1994 and the album ended up claiming huge praise from the critics, being named "Album of the Year" by "Melody Maker", "Mixmag" and "The Face". It even won the "Mercury Music Prize For Album of the Year", beating competition such as Oasis, Blur or Suede. A great achievement for a non-britpop, non-mainstream, underground band, I must say.
8. "I got nobody on my side / And surely that ain't right / And surely that ain't right..." - These sad lines belong to which song?

Answer: Roads

From "Dummy". Porstishead played "Roads" in the Roseland, New York concert, in July 24th 1997, but the version included in the "PNYC" album was not the same. It was a recording from a live concert at the Quart Festival, Kristiansand, one year after. Personally I prefer the last one. Beth sang from the bottom of her heart, in such a powerful way, you just can't help to shiver and consider her a true musical goddess.
9. "Cos this life is a farce / I can't breathe through this mask / Like a fool / So breathe on, little sister, breathe on / Ohh so breathe on, little sister, like a fool" - Can you guess the name of that song?

Answer: It's A Fire

From "Dummy". Ten years (1998-2008) passed between the releases of "Portishead" and "Third". During that time, Portishead members participated in other projects. Beth, for instance, released a solo album in 2003 named "Out of Season" (well, not exactly a solo album, but more of a collaboration with former Talk Talk member Paul Webb, AKA "Rustin' Man").

She also sang on the album "Cinema", by my fellow Portuguese musician Rodrigo Lećo.
10. "For so bare is my heart, I can't hide / And so where does my heart, belong" - What is the title of this heartbreaking Portishead song?

Answer: Undenied

From "Portishead". My personal favorite song by Portishead is a real "killer song": it's so depressing that it gets dangerous to listen to it if you are having a really bad day!

That concludes my quiz about this amazing band. Hope you had fun!
