Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was lurking about in "December's foggy freeze"?

Answer: Aqualung

"Do you still remember December's foggy freeze,
When the ice that clings on to your beard is screaming agony.
And you snatch your rattling last breaths with deep-sea-diver sounds,
and the flowers bloom like madness in the spring."

From the Jethro Tull album of the same name.

"Mustang Sally" has been covered numerous times, and "Roland" is the work of the late-great Warren Zevon.
2. In which song does the woman have "brown skin shining"?

Answer: The Boys of Summer

"I can see you,
Your brown skin shining in the sun.
You got that hair slicked back
And those Wayfarers on, baby."

Don Henley's eerie classic.

"Brown Sugar" is by the Rolling Stones, and "Aja" is a haunting tune by Steely Dan.
3. In which song does the main character admit to paying dues "and bad mistakes"?

Answer: We Are the Champions

"And bad mistakes
I've made a few
I've had my share of sand kicked in my face,
But I've come through."

From Queen's "News of the World" album.

"Roller" is a rockin' tune from April Wine. The Babys sang "Isn't It Time," and the lovely Lita Ford banged out "Kiss Me Deadly."
4. In which song is the subject of the song told "don't come hanging"?

Answer: American Woman

A huge allegorical hit by the Guess Who that compares the United States to an evil woman.

"Don't come hanging around my door;
I don't wanna see your face no more.
I got more important things to do
Than spend my time growing old with you."

"Hangman's Jury" was a minor hit but great song from Aerosmith's "Permanent Vacation" album. "The hangman isn't hanging" in Steely Dan's "Do It Again." And Foreigner sang "Head Games" (Okay, it doesn't have anything about hanging, but it does mention heads which are attached to necks from which people hang!).
5. If you've "been through minks," you know this song.

Answer: Love Stinks

"I've been through diamonds
I've been through minks.
I've been through it all.
Love stinks!"

J. Geils must have had a REALLY bad love life at some point!
6. In this song the narrator shifts gears and senses his lover's needs at about "half past four."

Answer: Radar Love

"It's my baby calling, says 'I need you here,'
And it's a half past four and I'm shiftin' gear.
When she is lonely and the longing gets too much,
She sends a cable coming in from above.
Don't need no phone at all.
We've got a thing that's called Radar Love;
We've got a wave in the air, Radar Love."

One of Golden Earrings two hit songs (the other was "Twilight Zone").

Both "Cadillac" songs are by Bruce Springsteen, and the Eagles had a minor hit with "James Dean" who was known to drive just a biiiiit over the speed limit.
7. In which song does the singer get stuck on a "full-moon night"?

Answer: Ridin' the Storm Out

"Ridin' the storm out,
Waiting for the thaw out
On a full moon night
In a Rocky Mountain winter."

Back when Gary Ritchrath wailed on guitar and Kevin Cronin still could rock, REO Speedwagon had their first real hit with this song.

"Bad Moon Rising" was a Credence Clearwater Revival hit. Warren Zevon (he's made two stops in this quiz) sang "Werewolves," and Tom Petty had an album named "Full Moon Fever."
8. It's hard to imagine, but one songwriter must have musical firearms because he claims "the shotgun sings." In which song would you find this musical murder weapon?

Answer: Won't Get Fooled Again

"We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet,
And the morals that they worship will be gone.
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgement of all wrong;
They decide and the shotgun sings the song."

The Who at their rocking best on what is the theme song for the TV show "CSI: Miami."

"Janie's Got a Gun" was a hit for Aerosmith. "Take My Breath Away" was a song from the "Top Gun" movie soundtrack, and Metallica rocked on "One."
9. Lots of pain in this quiz, and Question #9 is no exception. In which song would one perceive "screaming and bullwhips"?

Answer: Southern Man

"I heard screaming and bullwhips cracking."

Neil Young's take on the lack of civil rights for blacks in the American South in the 60's. Of course, Lynyrd Skynyrd didn't like his take much and slammed Mr. Young in "Sweet Home Alabama":

"I heard Mr. Young sing about her.
Well, I heard ol' Neil put her down.
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A southern man don't need him around anyhow."

Young also sang "Ohio" along with Crosby, Stills, and Nash. The Allman Brothers sang "Whipping Post" (Oh, Lord, I feel like I'm dying!).
10. "Music is reversible" in which song?

Answer: Fire On High

This Electric Light Orchestra tune is often thought of as an instrumental. And it is except for these words:

"The music is reversible,
But time is not
Turn back! Turn back! Turn back!"

However, you probably don't remember them because they are played in reverse on the recording! That Jeff Lynne has a wicked sense of humor!

Pink Floyd's "Empty Spaces" has a backward recording. The message is "Congratulations. You've just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the funny farm, Chalfont." This is a reference to Syd Barrett, the leader of the band who suffered a mental breakdown years before.

Supposedly the Beatles' "Revolution #9" and Styx's "Snowblind" contain backward messages, but they weren't placed there on purpose. "Revolution #9" supposedly says, "Turn me on, dead man." A line in "Snowblind" allegedly says, "Oh, Satan, move in our voices." I've heard it, and it sounds close!
