Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the lead singer for Gerry and the Pacemakers?

Answer: Gerry Marsden

The British music scene really took off in 1963, and Gerry and the Pacemakers led the way with the new sound of 'Merseybeat'. Their first three single releases all reached number one in the UK chart. Alas, by 1965 their time at the top was over, as Merseybeat had ran its natural course.
2. Rod Argent was the lead singer for The Zombies.

Answer: False

The Zombies were a part of the 'British invasion' of 1964. They actually had more success in America than they did in the U.K. Rod Argent was the keyboard player and Colin Blunstone sang the lead vocals. Argent went on to form his own band in the 1970's, simply named 'Argent'.
3. Who was the lead singer for The Troggs?

Answer: Reg Presley

As far as I am aware, Reg Presley was not related to Elvis! The Troggs hit the big time in 1966 with 'Wild Thing', which reached number two in the UK chart. The song has been covered many times since by other bands.
4. Who was the lead singer for The Rolling Stones?

Answer: Mick Jagger

The Rolling Stones were undeniably one of the UK's greatest bands of the 1960's. However, in my opinion, they never really recovered from the loss of founding member Brian Jones, who drowned in his swimming pool in 1969.
5. Who was the lead singer for The Move?

Answer: Carl Wayne

The Move had seven top ten UK hits in the late 1960's. Band member Roy Wood left The Move to form his own glam rock band 'Wizzard' in 1972.
6. Who was the lead singer for Led Zeppelin?

Answer: Robert Plant

Led Zeppelin hit America like an express train during the 1970's. Tales of their rock'n'roll excesses are far too many to mention here. Robert Plant went solo in the 1980/90's with limited success.
7. Who was the lead singer for Jethro Tull?

Answer: Ian Anderson

Lead singer Ian Anderson invested profits from his Jethro Tull days wisely. He now owns a string of fish farms in Scotland.
8. Paul Kossof was the lead singer for Free.

Answer: False

Free had three top ten UK hits in the early 1970's. Lead singer Paul Rogers went on to form 'Bad Company'.
9. Who was the lead singer for Yes?

Answer: Jon Anderson

The 'prog-rock' band have generally played to a more selective audience, but have sold millions of albums worldwide. Jon Anderson partnered with Greek musician Vangelis in the early 1980's, to form 'Jon and Vangelis'.
10. Who was the lead singer for The Faces?

Answer: Rod Stewart

Former lead singer Steve Marriot left the Small Faces in 1969 to form 'Humble Pie'. Rod Stewart took over the singing duties for a while in the early 1970's. Thus 'The Small Faces' became 'The Faces'.
11. Who was the lead singer for Queen?

Answer: Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury was born Frederick Bulsara to Persian parents. Interestingly, he attended the same art college in London (Ealing) as The Who's Pete Townshend did ten years earlier.
12. Jeff Lynne was the lead singer for the Electic Light Orchestra.

Answer: True

When 'The Move' split up in the early 1970's, drummer Bev Bevan joined Jeff Lynne and others to form E.L.O. They went on to chalk up fourteen top ten UK hits from 1972 to 1981.
13. Who was the lead singer for The Buzzcocks?

Answer: Pete Shelley

The Buzzcocks became one of the Manchester bands to enjoy success in the U.K. They were an integral part of the punk explosion during the late 1970's.
14. Who was the lead singer for Tubeway Army?

Answer: Gary Numan

Gary Numan went on to have more success as a solo artist. From 1979 to 1982 he scored six top ten UK hits.
15. Who was the lead singer for The Specials?

Answer: Terry Hall

The Specials were a part of the 'Ska' music scene, which gained huge but short-lived popularity in the UK during the late 1970's. 'Ska' was basically the Jamaican 'bluebeat' of the 1960's, which evolved into reggae.
16. Who was the lead singer for The Police?

Answer: Sting

After The Police split up, Sting went on to have a successful solo career, and has also acted in several films, notably 'Quadrophenia' and 'Brimstone And Treacle'.
17. Who was the lead singer for The Clash?

Answer: Joe Strummer

From the summer riots of Notting Hill, London in 1976, The Clash emerged and spearheaded the punk movement along with The Sex Pistols. Sadly, Joe Strummer died in 2002 and will be sorely missed.
18. Who was the lead singer for Simple Minds?

Answer: Jim Kerr

Scottish band Simple Minds, along with U2, ruled the UK music scene during the 1980's. Their song 'Don't You Forget About Me' was used as the theme tune for the 1985 film 'The Breakfast Club'.
19. Johnny Marr was the lead singer for The Smiths.

Answer: False

The UK music scene became very commercialised (hold your hands up Def Leppard!) during the 1980's, but The Smiths kept the 'indie' scene alive and well with a string of classic tunes. They had a huge influence over the indie music bands that had suddenly emerged in the late 1980's. Singer Morrissey went on to have limited solo success.
20. Who was the lead singer for The Alarm?

Answer: Mike Peters

Welsh rock band The Alarm was like a breath of fresh air during the soul/disco obsessed UK of the 1980's. Unfortunately, they sank without trace when the indie scene hit the UK like a gale force nine.
21. Who was the lead singer for Madness?

Answer: Suggs

Madness started life as a great 'ska' band, but went a bit commercial during the 1980's. Singer Suggs (Graham McPherson) had moderate success as a solo artist during the 1990's.
22. Who was the lead singer for The Happy Mondays?

Answer: Shaun Ryder

The Mondays, along with The Stone Roses, kick-started the moribund UK music scene of the late 1980's. Ex-Postman Shaun Ryder went on to form 'Black Grape' during the 1990's.
23. Who was the lead singer for The Charlatans?

Answer: Tim Burgess

The Charlatans, along with The Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses, came from Manchester and enjoyed some early success. However, they faded somewhat when Oasis and Blur entered the fray. Singer Tim Burgess now lives in Los Angeles.
24. Who was the lead singer for Cast?

Answer: John Power

Cast was a big part of the 'Brit-pop' scene of the mid-1990's. In my opinion, one of the most underrated indie bands from the U.K.
25. Richard McNamara was the lead singer for Embrace.

Answer: False

Brothers Richard and Danny McNamara (lead singer) formed Embrace and had some success in the UK in the late 1990's. Unfortunately, the indie scene had moved back 'underground' to the ever increasing onslaught of boy bands and pop idols, which have got the 2000's off to a very poor start.
