Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What town did the group Lipps Inc. sing about in 1980?

Answer: Funkytown

It was the song "Funkytown" that Lipps. Inc used to propel themselves to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts for a four week stay in the spring of 1980. The song also reached number one in Germany, Austria, Norway, The Netherlands and Switzerland. It reached number two in the U.K. It is generally recognized as one of the last major hits of the disco era.
2. What's the title of the 1981 number one song by Hall and Oates?

Answer: Kiss on My List

"Kiss on My List" spent three weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1981. It was the third Daryl Hall and John Oates release from an album called "Voices" and was their second number one tune. "Rich Girl" had topped the charts back in 1977, but it was this song that established the duo as a force to be reckoned with in 1980s music.
3. The 1982 motion picture "Rocky III" gave us a number one tune. Can you remember which one?

Answer: Eye of The Tiger

"Eye of the Tiger" was written specifically for the 1982 motion picture "Rocky III" by Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik of the group Survivor. The song was written at the request of Sylvester Stallone, who needed a theme song for his motion picture after his request to use Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" was turned down. No matter. "Eye of the Tiger" became a smash hit, spending six weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts.

It also won a Grammy Award in 1983 and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
4. The word Flashdance never actually is used in the lyrics of the 1983 hit tune "Flashdance..What a Feeling".

Answer: True

That's true. The word "Flashdance" is not part of the lyrics to 1983's "Flashdance..What a Feeling" which is the title song from the motion picture "Flashdance" (1983). The song was performed by Irene Cara, who co-wrote the lyrics, and spent six weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring that year.

It went to number one in more than ten countries around the globe and also won an Academy Award as Best Original Song.
5. "Footloose" was a hit motion picture from 1984. The soundtrack produced many hit singles, but only two of them got to the top spot. One was the title track. What was the other?

Answer: Let's Hear It For the Boy

"Let's Hear It For the Boy" performed by Deniece Williams, spent two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1984, becoming the second number one single from the soundtrack of the motion picture "Footloose" (1984). Those two songs were the only ones from the soundtrack to hit the top spot on the charts. "Almost Paradise" made it as high as number seven, and "Waiting for a Like You" spent 10 weeks at the number two spot on the charts.
6. The 1985 motion picture "The Breakfast Club" produced a number one single called "Don't You (Forget About Me)" for this Scottish act. Can you name them?

Answer: Simple Minds

It was Simple Minds that performed the song "Don't You (Forget About Me), which became the theme song from the 1985's "The Breakfast Club". The song itself spent a week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1985.
7. What's the name of the number one Prince single from 1986?

Answer: Kiss

"Kiss" became Prince's third number one single when it reached the top of the charts for a two week stay in the spring of 1986. It came off an album called "parade" His record company originally did not want to release the song as a single, but eventually relented. Good thing too.

The song went to the top of the charts in the U.S., became a top 10 single in the U.K. and won a Grammy Award. It is listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 461.

Answer: Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now

All the tunes listed were from the band Starship featuring Grace Slick, and "Sara" was even a number one tune, but the song from the motion picture "Mannequin" was "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now". The song spent two weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1987.

It also reached the top of the charts in the U.K., Canada and Ireland and was nominated for an Academy Award in 1988.
9. "Father Figure" was the first number one tune for George Michael as a solo artist.

Answer: False

Actually it was his third number one single in the U.S. as a solo artist after the breakup with Andrew Ridgely. The prior number ones were "Careless Whisper" and "Faith". "Father Figure" spent two weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the winter of 1988. Interestingly, it was his first single as a solo artist not to reach the top 10 in his native U.K.
10. "Eternal Flame" was a top selling hit in 1989 for this all female group. Who were they?

Answer: The Bangles

It was The Bangles, fronted by Susanna Hoffs, who took "Eternal Flame" to the top of the U.S. Billboard charts for one week in the spring of 1989. The song, co-written by Hoffs, was a departure of sorts for the group, in that it was basically a ballad, which was certainly different than the up tempo songs that had been hits for them prior to this.
