Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 1980 Billy Joel classic begins with "What's the matter with the clothes I'm wearing, can't you tell that your tie's too wide, Maybe I should buy some old tab collars welcome back to the age of jive..." and goes on to describe various old versus new styles in dress, cars and music in general. What song is it?

Answer: It's Still Rock and Roll to Me

All big hits for sure, but the correct answer was "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me" which spent two weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the summer of 1980 and also reached number 14 in the U.K. The song was a cut from the album called "Glass Houses".

The premise of the lyrics is a manager trying to get his artist to change with the times and the artist responding that no matter what he wears or drives, the music would still be the same.
2. A tune originally co-written by Jackie DeShannon became a big hit for Kim Carnes in 1981. Can you fill in the blanks?

Answer: Bette Davis Eyes

"Bette Davis Eyes" spent an incredible nine non-consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring and summer of 1981. The song itself was co-written and recorded by Jackie DeShannon in 1974, but received little commercial success.

It was Carnes' version that made it to number one in over 30 countries worldwide. The song also won two Grammy Awards. And yes, allegedly Bette Davis was a big fan of the song.
3. What couple was John Cougar (his name at the time) talking about in his 1982 number one hit?

Answer: Jack and Diane

"Jack and Diane" was a John Mellencamp penned 1982 number one Billboard Hot 100 tune for four weeks in the fall that year. It was a cut from his smash album "American Fool" during the time when he was going by the name John Cougar. The song was allegedly taken from some of his experiences growing up.
4. Eurythmics had their biggest U.S. hit in 1983. Don't fall asleep. Give me the name please.

Answer: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)

Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, as the Eurythmics, scored their biggest U.S. number one hit with their first release in America called "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)". The song spent a week at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in September of 1983. The song also got to number one in Canada and number two in the U.K.
5. There was no knee jerk reaction to this 1984 Duran Duran tune that reached the top of the charts. Can you name it?

Answer: The Reflex

Reportedly the band's most successful single, Duran Duran's "The Reflex" reached the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts for a two week stay in the summer of 1984. The song was also their second number one tune in the U.K. and reached number one in Italy, Canada, Belgium and Ireland as well. The song was a cut from their very successful album "Seven and the Ragged Tiger".
6. "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" was the first of Tears For Fears' number one hits anywhere in the world when it topped the charts in 1985.

Answer: False

It is true that in the U.S. "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" was the first number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts when it spent two weeks there in June of 1985, but in the many countries (including the U.S., Australia and Germany) another of their hits, "Shout" made it to the top first, having been released a few months before. "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" never got to the top in the U.K., peaking at number two.
7. The Pet Shop Boys got to the top of the charts in 1986 with this song. Where were the girls from?

Answer: West End

"West End Girls" was the song which gave the Pet Shop Boys a number one U.S. Billboard Hot 100 tune when it spent a week at the top of the charts in May of 1986. The song was actually released twice, the first time being in 1984 when it became a club hit. After the group changed managers in late 1985, the song was re-released and reached the top both in the U.S. and the U.K.
8. The band called Cutting Crew had a series of number one U.S. hits, the first of which was "(I Just) Died in Your Arms".

Answer: False

Nope. Actually they started from the top and worked their way down. "I Just) Died in Your Arms" was their debut U.S. single, and it spent two weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1987. The song also reached the top in Canada, Finland, and Norway, and was a Top Ten hit in several other countries.

However, this was the group's peak, since their next song only got to number nine in the U.S., and couldn't even crack the Top 20 in any other country. It went downhill from there and they never had another hit.
9. Which reflective song did Michael Jackson take to the top of the charts in 1988?

Answer: Man in the Mirror

"Man in the Mirror" was a number one tune for Jackson in the U.S., spending two weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard charts in the spring of 1988. The song was the fourth of five number one tunes off his album called "Bad", which actually had more number one tunes than his most famous album, "Thriller".
10. Can you guess the name of the hungry group that gave us "She Drives Me Crazy" in 1989?

Answer: Fine Young Cannibals

The Fine Young Cannibals gave us "She Drives Me Crazy" which spent a week at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1989. The song came from an album called "The Raw and the Cooked". It actually hit the top of the U.K. charts a few months before it made it in the U.S.

By the way, I thought I made up all the other names, but there actually was a punk-rock band called Dog Eat Dog.
