Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Summer of 1960 saw Elvis Presley hit the top of the charts with "It's Now or Never". The music was taken from a famous Italian song. Which one?

Answer: O Sole Mio

The lyrics of the song were based on a song called "There's No Tomorrow" which was recorded by Toni Martin in the late 1940s. Presley heard this song while in the Army in the late 1950s and when he was released from the service, went about recording the song with modified lyrics written for him.

The melody was taken from "O Sole Mio", an Italian melody written in the late 1800s. The result was a number one hit in the summer of 1960 which spent five weeks at the top spot in the U.S., as well as hitting number one in the U.K.
2. Who took a rockabilly song called "Moody River" to the top of the charts in 1961?

Answer: Pat Boone

It was Pat Boone who took this song to the top of the charts for a one week stay in summer 1961. Boone was a very successful singer during the late 1950s and early 1960s. His early career consisted of taking the song of some of the biggest black R & B artists of the day, and covering the songs for white audiences, during the time in the U.S. when even music was segregated. Boone covered hits by Fats Domino, and Little Richard, among others.

This particular song was a cover of a rockabilly hit originally performed by country singer Chase Webster.
3. "I Can't Stop Loving You" has been covered by many artists over the years. All four of the artists below recorded the song. Which artist made it a number one hit?

Answer: Ray Charles

Ray Charles took this song, which was a cover originally written by country singer/songwriter Don Gibson, and soared to the top of the charts for five weeks in the summer of 1962. Charles version of the song has been listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 161.

As for the others mentioned Jerry Lee Lewis covered the song in 1969 as a country ballad and in 1979 in a more traditional manner. Sinatra recorded the song in 1964 with an assist from Count Basie, and Elvis Presley's version was done in the 1970s. Roy Orbison actually recorded the song in 1961 but the song never charted.
4. In 1963 this singer of Japanese descent made it all the way to the top of the charts with "Sukiyaki". What was his name?

Answer: Kyu Sakamoto

The song was sung entirely in Japanese and topped the charts for three weeks. It is the only song sung in Japanese to ever top the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It was re-recorded in English in 1981 by the group "A Taste of Honey", and made it all the way to Number 3 although the lyrics were completely different than the original. Sakamoto, who was one of Japan's most popular musicians, tragically died in a plane crash in 1985.
5. In the 1960s, this group was often in the upper echelons of the charts, but what was The Four Seasons' number one hit of 1964?

Answer: Rag Doll

"Rag Doll" took the group to the top of the charts for a two weeks stay in the summer of 1964. The song was written by Bob Gaudio with an assist from Bob Crewe. The interesting thing about this song, which arguably was their finest, is the way the song came about.
"According to songwriter Bob Gaudio, the recording was inspired by the activities of a young girl as he was stopped in traffic in Manhattan. As he waited for the traffic signal to change, a dirty-faced girl proceeded to clean the windshield of his automobile for some spare change. When Gaudio reached into his wallet, he was surprised to find that all he had was currency, and none of the bills were smaller than $20. He gave the girl in tattered clothes a $20 bill. Her look of utter astonishment stayed in Gaudio's mind as he approached the recording studio. "Rag Doll", with a few tweaks by Bob Crewe, was the result."**

6. What lady had a "lovely daughter" in a 1965 song title?

Answer: Mrs. Brown

I'm sure they all had lovely daughters, but the song was "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" by Herman's Hermits. The song reached the top of the American charts in May of 1965 for three weeks. Oddly, the song was never even released in their home country, the U.K.

The song was written by Trevor Peacock, and was frequently performed at parties, with the name of the girl substituted each time.
7. Otis Redding topped the charts in 1966 with "When a Man Loves a Woman".

Answer: False

It wasn't Redding, but in fact it was R & B singer Percy Sledge who broke onto the scene and took "When a Man Loves a Woman" to the top of the charts for two weeks in the spring of 1966. It was his first release, and ended up being the biggest hit of his career. The song is listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 54.
8. This light and airy song boosted The Association to the number one position on the charts in 1967. What song was it?

Answer: Windy

"Windy" went to the top of the charts in July 1967 for The Association and stayed there for four straight weeks. The song was written by Ruthann Friedman. It was said that the song was originally written about a man, and the group changed the lyrics to fit for a woman. Friedman claims that the man was a fictitious person and was not anyone specific.

The song itself was the second number one hit for the group, the first being "Cherish" in 1966.
9. All these hits by The Doors charted. Can you remember the title of the one which went to the top in 1968?

Answer: Hello, I Love You

It was "Hello I Love You" which made it to the number one spot in the summer of 1968 and stayed there for two weeks. It also was The Doors first hit in the U.K., peaking at number 15 on the charts there. All the other songs listed were major hits for the group between the years 1967 and 1969, but none reached the top of the charts.
10. This sweet treat made the top of the charts in 1969. It's comical. What's the name of the song?

Answer: Sugar Sugar

"Sugar Sugar" was the sweet treat that found its way to the top of the charts in the fall of 1969. The Archies tune ended up as U.S. Billboard's number one song for that year. The brainchild of musician Ron Dante, the song spent four weeks at the number one position in the U.S. that year, and has been rated at number 63 on Billboard Magazine's "Greatest Songs of All Time". Pretty good for a bunch of cartoon characters.
