Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let us start with the 60s. 'The Girl from Ipanema' has been covered hundreds of times, by everyone from Stan Getz (1962 original) to Frank Sinatra. This is a live version from 1966.

Answer: Lou Rawls

From 'Lou Rawls - LIVE!'. One of his earlier efforts, it's more jazzy than his later material. Once you've heard it, you cannot forget it. Herb Alpert covered it in 1964 on his 'South of the Border' LP, but neither Ray Charles or Jerry Butler did, (it's pretty hard to find someone who didn't).
2. The Rolling Stones had a huge hit with 'Satisfaction' in 1965. What "Soul man" covered it the next year?

Answer: Otis Redding

Otis took it to the top of the R&B charts in 1966. A real soul shouter, you can almost feel the sweat.
3. Roy Orbison had one of his biggest hits with 'Oh Pretty Woman' in 1964. In 1982 Van Halen put their touch on it. In between, this 70s artist tried it on for size too. The year was 1972, tell me who.

Answer: Al Green

From his 'I'm Still in Love with You' album. I like this tune no matter who is singing it.
4. A song with very strange lyrics, 'Come Together', was a big hit for the Beatles in 1969. In late 1970, this group placed it on an album of the same title.

Answer: Ike and Tina Turner

The album also included a cover of Sly and the Family Stones' 'I Wanna Take You Higher', and the Phil Spector produced, 'River Deep, Mountain High'.
5. The Doors hit big with it in 1967, Then Jose Feliciano took 'Light My Fire' to new heights. This woman recorded it in 1979 with a little help from Jose.

Answer: Minnie Ripperton

Minnie got her first taste of celebrity singing back-up for Stevie Wonder. The cover is from her last recorded LP 'Minnie'. They seemed to be having quite a bit of fun with this. Jose doesn't come in until after the bridge, but when he does, their vocal interactions are a blast.
6. The Righteous Brothers did well in 1965 with both, 'Unchained Melody' and 'Ebb Tide', but this man had big hits with these two songs way back in 1955. Can you name him?

Answer: Roy Hamilton

Not as well remembered now, Roy was a pretty big deal in the mid-50s. He took 'Ebb Tide' to number five on the R&B charts and 'Unchained Melody' to number one R&B and number six pop. He had his last major hit in 1961 and passed away shortly after a stroke in 1966. He was 40 years old.
7. A Jackson Browne tune and one his biggest chart toppers, interestingly enough covered by the Jackson Five in 1972.

Answer: Doctor My Eyes

An interesting choice seeing as the Jackson Five were an upbeat, almost bubblegum pop group at the time and these lyrics are so bleak. You couldn't tell it from their version though, (it's quite the toe-tapper).
8. Bob Dylan wrote and recorded the song, The Byrds sang it, The Everly Brothers and even Isaac Hayes have all given it a go. This cover is by the Isley Brothers, on their 'Givin' it Back' LP, but what song is it?

Answer: Lay Lady Lay

This is a great (though often overlooked) album by the Isleys. It's pretty much an album of all covers, (Jimmy Hendrix' 'Machine Gun', James Taylor's 'Fire and Rain' and 'Spill the Wine'- War, to name a few), but the Isley Bros. really have a way of breathing additional life into tunes, making these songs their own. Seals and Crofts wrote 'Summer Breeze' and Stephen Stills wrote 'Love the One You're With'.
9. Some artists can take a song, rebuild it from the ground up, and come up with something so unique, it's almost like a whole new song. Aretha Franklin is one of these artist, and she's done it often, (a famous example would be Otis Redding's 'Respect') This time she did it to Marvin Gaye. (it was 1972)

Answer: Wholy Holy

Originally appearing on the Marvin Gaye classic 'What's Goin' On', Aretha rips this one apart. An earth-shattering performance, it doesn't get any better than this. She did record 'A Change is Gonna Come', but that was written by Sam Cooke.
10. On this occasion, Aretha does it to Stevie Wonder. He wrote it and recorded it in 1967 and didn't release it until 1976, but after Aretha finished with it, few people remembered.

Answer: Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)

This is definitely the definitive version. 'Look into Your Heart' and 'Giving Him Something He Can Feel' were both written by Curtis Mayfield (the latter was also covered by 'En Vogue' in 1992). 'I'm in Love' was written by Bobby Womack and made a hit by Wilson Pickett in 1968. Aretha put her twist on that one too, later the same year.
11. Aretha is not the only artist known for "stealing" songs. This balladeer of the 80s was almost as good at it as she. He did it to The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and Sam Cooke. The most famous appeared on his solo debut album; the victim was Dionne Warwick.

Answer: Luther Vandross

Luther took 'A House is Not a Home' and turned it into a classic, even Dionne Warwick agreed. Luther had quite a knack for this sort of thing and I have to admit he did it well. A talent truly missed.
12. Johnny Cash laid this one down in 1969. In 1974 'If I were a Carpenter' was recorded by this group.

Answer: The Four Tops

It appears on their 'Anthology' and on their 'Greatest Hits' compilation, among others. Definitely a different direction than the norm.
13. Back to the Beatles. Their 1966 version of 'Got to Get You into My Life' was considered very "soulful" at the time, then this 70s supergroup got hold of it.

Answer: Earth Wind and Fire

Released on 'The Best of Earth Wind and Fire, Vol.1' The song went to number one on the R&B charts and number nine pop in 1978. It was also on the 'Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' soundtrack.
14. Jose Feliciano dared to take a 1967 number one motown hit and make it his. Nothing like the original, it makes you look at the song in a whole new way.

Answer: My World is Empty Without You

From his 1969 'Souled' LP. He slows it down considerably, adds some Spanish guitar and wow! A rare gem indeed.
15. Danny O'Keefe wrote this song and released it on his 1973 album 'Breezy Stories'. This cover also came out in 1973 by this troubled but talented artist.

Answer: Donny Hathaway

The song is "Magdelena", (from the album 'Extension of a Man'). With its old-timey feel, this is far different from most of the material Donny was known for. It makes you wonder what other jewels he might have recorded had he stayed with us; unfortunately he committed suicide in January of 1979. Leo Sayer did a version in 1976.
