Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many beers did Johnny Paycheck drink in one night as featured in the title of one of his hit songs?

Answer: Fifteen

Johnny Paycheck had a hit with "Fifteen Beers".

"I drank fifteen beers
That's a whole lot of brew in one night
When you try to drown a memory from your mind"
2. "Sunday Morning Coming Down" was a hit for Johnny Cash, amongst others. Who wrote the lyrics?

Answer: Kris Kristofferson

Kris Kristofferson had a massive hit when he penned "Sunday Morning Coming Down". Apart from Kris, the song was recorded by Johnny Cash, Ray Stevens and many others and has become an all time classic.

"Well I woke up Sunday morning
With no way to hold my head that did'nt hurt,
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad
So I had one more for dessert"
3. What let Merle Haggard, George Jones and many others down?

Answer: The bottle

Written by Merle Haggard, "The Bottle Let Me Down" was hit for George Jones, Merle Haggard and was recorded by artists such as Gram Parsons and Elvis Costello.

"Tonight the bottle let me down
And let your memory come around
The one true friend I though I'd found
Tonight the bottle let me down"
4. What were the things that Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, George Jones and many others had reasons to quit?

Answer: Smoke and booze

Another hit penned by Merle Haggard. The reasons for quitting were the smoke and booze. This hit has been recorded by numerous artists, but my favourite is the duet by Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. The title of the song is "Reasons to Quit".

I did have "Smoke and Beer" as the original answer as this was shown as part of Merle Haggard's lyrics. However the majority of recordings, including the one that I have, refers to "Smoke and Booze". I apologise to anyone who has done this question and got it wrong.

"Reasons to quit
The smoke and booze don't do me like before
And I'm hardly ever sober
And my friends don't come around any more"
5. Who had a number one hit with "Two More Bottles of Wine"?

Answer: Emmylou Harris

"Two More Bottles of Wine" was the third number one hit for Emmylou Harris. Recording a wide variety of music with different artists and numerous hits to her name, Emmylou is, without doubt, one of the top female country stars. Her work will be played for many years to come.

"Two months later got trouble in mind
My baby moved out and left me behind
But it's alright because it's midnight
And I got two more bottles of wine"
6. In 1957 what made Slim Dusty rather annoyed?

Answer: A Pub with no Beer

In 1957, Australian country singer Slim Dusty recorded the humorous song "A Pub with no Beer". It immediately became a hit, went to gold and was Australia's largest selling record at that time. Various versions have been recorded by a wide range of artists from Tom T. Hall and Johnny Cash to Rolf Harris and the Wurzels. A sequel was released two years later entitled "The Answer to the Pub With No Beer" which told of the beer delivery truck having broke down.

"There's nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear
Than to stand in the bar of a pub with no beer"
7. What did David Allen Coe, George Jones and many others go home with in their hands?

Answer: A Bottle

Penned by David Allen Coe "This Bottle (In My Hand)" was recorded with George Jones. Other artists have recoded the song but I think David and George's recording is the best.

"Last week he spent his whole paycheck on whiskey
And I know on friday night he'll do it all again
Oh, he'll drink till he falls down then he'll order one more round
And then go home with that bottle in his hand"
8. What sort of mountain did Johnny Paycheck climb?

Answer: Barstool Mountain

Johnny Paycheck had a hit with Moe Bandy's "Barstool Mountain" and is featured on the album "Johnny Paycheck - Take This Job And Shove It".

"I've finally found a place where I can take it
All this loneliness you left behind
On a mountain that's no hill for a climber
Just one step up, sit back and pour the wine

I climb up on barstool mountain
High above your world where there's no pain
And I'm the king of barstool mountain
Pretending I don't love you once again"
9. Who "Stopped Drinking Today"?

Answer: Ol' George

"Ol' George Stopped Drinking Today" was recorded by George Jones. Considering the amount he used to drink this was rather an apt song for him to record. Having been fined on numerous occasions for not showing up at gigs he got the nickname "No Show Jones". However, he continued to record hits and is without doubt one of the top country stars of all times. With his distinctive voice he could "tell" the songs like no other artist, and I am not ashamed to say that many of his songs remind me of myself.

"Me and the bottle
Have always been friends
Oh we've had a few ol' nasty fights
But the bottle would always win
And when I go to answer that final curtain call
I can hear these words bein' whispered by all

Ol' George stopped drinkin' today
They're all gonna gather round me
Lord I wish they could hear me say
No more income taxes
No more bills to pay
Ol' Geroge stopped drinkin' today"
10. Who had a hit with "One for my Baby"?

Answer: Frank Sinatra

Although not country, I slipped this question in because of the last line of the chorus being the same as the title of this quiz. Written by Johnny Mercer, Frank Sintra had a hit with "One More for My Baby and One More For the Road".
