quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" sessions the band was visited by The Beatles recording their album in a neighboring studio.

Answer: True

Waters later stated that it was "like a visit by the royal family members". The Beatles were recording their famous "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".
2. Which guitarist was first considered as a replacement for Syd Barrett?

Answer: Jeff Beck

The idea was quickly dropped as the Floyds supposed that Beck's financial conditions as an ex-Yardbird would be unreachable to them at that moment.
3. "A Saucerful Of Secrets" is the only Pink Floyd album where you can hear all five members of the band singing. (Compilations not included.)

Answer: True

Barrett and Wright perform vocals on the tracks written by them. Waters and Gilmour share vocals on other tracks, while Nick Mason sings some lines in verses of "Corporal Clegg". Not surprisingly, he never has done that since without heavy studio processing.
4. Roger Waters is partially tone-deaf and thus unable to tune his bass guitar properly. Who tuned his bass?

Answer: Rick Wright

Wright was considered by band's managers as the most talented musician in the band.
5. Rick Wright is a very shy person, and he is very critical about his works. When asked about his early Floyd compositions, he states that they are "amateurish". He even stated that one of them should be named "The Most Boring Song I've Ever Heard Bar Two". He was talking about...

Answer: See-Saw

He is also very critical about his first solo album, although the fans are generally agreeing that it is good, fine work.
6. Five songs were considered for the live "Ummagumma" album. "Interstellar Overdrive" was finally dropped. Three other songs were presented in their entirety, while one was edited. Which one?

Answer: Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun

The ending was cut out.
7. The studio "Ummagumma" album was divided into four parts, and each was filled by one musician's output. Everyone played all instruments on their parts, with the exception of "The Narrow Way Part Three" which was performed by the entire band.

Answer: False

Guitar, piano, organ, mellotron, bass guitar and drums were performed by David Gilmour. He stated that the lyrics were a big trouble for him on this one, and he even asked Roger to write him some lines. Waters refused.
8. During one rehearsal, David brought in a small tune he wrote, which he entitled "Theme For An Imaginary Western" (no relation to earlier Bruce-Brown song). The band loved the theme (especially Waters) and started working on it. The tune finally evolved into...

Answer: Atom Heart Mother

The opening melody, on studio album some gunshots and horse sounds were added to that tune.
9. In the first half of the 70s, Roger Waters, despite being quite wealthy, drove a cheap and small Mini Morris. Why?

Answer: Because of his wife.

His then-wife Judy was a dedicated Socialist. She convinced Waters to sell expensive and petrol-consuming Jaguar and buy a Mini. Also, the Waters bought some council tenancy buildings in London and rented flats for a small fee to poor and unemployed people.
10. When the band asked Italian authorities for permission to perform a filmed concert at Pompeii, they agreed under one condition. What was that condition?

Answer: The concert will be performed without audience.

The authorities feared that a large crowd would devastate precious cultural site, so they demanded that the only audience would be the ghosts of those perished under ash and lava in 79 AD.
11. Is Peter Watts, the band's road manager, related to actress Naomi Watts?

Answer: Yes

The closest relation possible - Naomi Watts is Peter Watts' daughter.
12. Rick Wright's input to "The Dark Side Of The Moon" was based on a famous 1950s jazz album.

Answer: True

Piano/electric piano line in "Time" is almost a direct quote from "So What" from Miles Davis' 1959 album "Kind Of Blue". Also, other keyboard parts are based on a Bill Evans' modal playing on that album. Wright demonstrates it personally in "Classic Albums: The Dark Side..." 2003 documentary.
13. An acclaimed director asked the band for the permission to use "Atom Heart Mother" in one of his most famous movies. However, he wanted to alter and edit the composition, so the band turned the offer down. The name of the director and the title of the movie were:

Answer: Stanley Kubrick, "A Clockwork Orange"

In the scene where Alex DeLarge is seducing two adolescent girls in a record store, if you look close you can spot the album cover on display.
14. One of the men on the "Wish You Were Here" cover appeared in a movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger

Answer: True

His name is Ronnie Rondell Jr. and he is a professional stuntman. He worked on about 150 movies, including "Commando", "Last Action Hero", "Batman & Robin" and "End Of Days" - all with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
15. This famous jazz musician appeared on "Wish You Were Here".

Answer: Stephane Grappelli

He was recording Wagner under Yehudi Menuhin in a neighbouring studio. His input was a small electric violin insert on the title track, just before the wind starts at the very end. He was paid 300 GBP in cash.
16. The 1974 compilation "A Nice Pair" was shortly after the release withdrawn and repackaged. What was the reason for changing an album cover?

Answer: It included a photography of a private medical practice information plate.

One of the photographs included a plate with "W.R.Phang. Dentist" written onto it. Phang threatened to sue the band, as it could be considered as an advertisement - and in England, advertising any medical practices is considered unethical. It was replaced by a photo of a Buddhist monk. Also, the cover included a photography of uncovered woman's breasts (a nice pair), although this did not create much fuss.
17. What animal was to be featured on "Meddle" album cover?

Answer: a baboon

Both Thorgerson and the band couldn't come with an interesting idea for a long time, so they seriously considered a cover being an ironical remake of that from "Atom Heart Mother" - this time, depicting a baboon's naked buttocks. At last, Storm came with the idea that finally made it to the cover.
18. "The Wall", primarily a Roger Waters' brainchild, includes five songs written or co-written by someone else. Three are Gilmour-Waters cooperation, one was written by Waters and Bob Ezrin. Ezrin also wrote one song, credited to Waters on the album cover. The single non-Waters composition is...

Answer: Is There Anybody Out There?

"Comfortably Numb" was a "David Gilmour" album outtake.
19. "Collection Of Great Dance Songs" was originally meant to be released with an accompanying single. A-side was "Money". What was chosen to be B-side?

Answer: Let There Be More Light

Odd selection, one has to say. The single was finally never released.
20. Due to its lyrical content, this Floyd album was presented on Polish radio in seriously abridged form.

Answer: The Final Cut

"Brezhnev got Afghanistan..." - Poland was at the time a Warsaw Pact member, and the album included some direct attacks at Leonid Brezhnev and the Soviet Union. In the 80's, British and American albums were not distributed in Poland, so one of the main radio programmes played many famous albums in their entirety, encouraging audiences to tape them.

When Marillion came to Poland for a six-show tour in early summer of 1987, they were told that none of their albums was ever released in Poland, so they expected to play to a small audience completely unfamiliar with their music.

They were seriously shocked that all six gigs sold out and that the entire audience sang every single song with them.
21. What brand of electric guitars David Gilmour used most frequently during "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" sessions?

Answer: Steinberger

Although Gilmour was at the time a Fender endorsee, he used mostly headless Steinbergers during those sessions.
22. Who is responsible for drumming on "Sorrow" (studio version)?

Answer: David Gilmour

Studio version of "Sorrow" does not include live drumming, only drum programming - done by David Gilmour.
23. "Amused To Death" contains personal attacks (one direct, one recorded backwards) at two people related with the band. Who was attacked by Waters on that album?

Answer: Stanley Kubrick and Bob Ezrin

Stanley Kubrick wanted to use altered fragments of "Atom Heart Mother" in his 1971 "A Clockwork Orange", but was turned down by the band. For "Amused To Death", Waters wanted to use samples from "2001: A Space Odyssey" ("...Will you stop, Dave? ...My mind is going, Dave. I can feel that..." - this time referring of course to David Gilmour), but Kubrick refused, feared that this would create a precedent, leading to countless samples from his movies.

After Kubrick's death, his family permitted Waters to use the samples, as heard on his "In The Flesh" live album. "Amused To Death" includes a backwards message, a sarcastical "thanks" to "Stanley". Bob Ezrin was originally hired to produce "Radio KAOS", but he later dropped to produce "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason".

As Waters stated: "Every man has his price, Bob, and yours was pretty low...". Andrew Lloyd-Webber was personally unrelated with the band.
24. Did Harry Waters, who played on his father's live shows in the 2000s, appear on any Waters studio album?

Answer: Yes

He appeared on "Radio KAOS" - "Harry and India Waters - Children in the Garden".
25. One musician appeared on albums of three major progressive rock acts: Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson.

Answer: True

Tony Levin played bass guitar and Chapman stick on "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" as well as on albums by Yes and King Crimson (where he was a regular member).
