Progressive Rock Trivia Questions

1. In 1976 a progressive music band released an LP on a private label titled "For You The Old Women". What is the name of the band?

From Quiz
Progressive Music Bands And Their Record Albums

Answer: Mirthrandir

"For You The Old Women" was released by the progressive band Mirthrandir in 1976 on the private Mirth Music Inc. label. The band was from New Jersey. The band had six members and had twin lead guitars. They were a symphonic progressive band in the veins of Gentle Giant, Genesis, Yes, and Yezda Urfa. The melodies were good and like a lot of progressive songs there were long instrumental passages. The LP is around 38 minutes long and consists of five songs. The most I've seen a copy sell for is $410.00. I don't know if this LP has been reissued on vinyl but Greg Walker did release it on CD on his Syn-Phonic label. He most likely still has a website through which he sells progressive and other genre reissues.

2. When Van Der Graaf Generator reformed in 1975 what was the name of the "comeback" album?

From Quiz Prog Rock! It's Not Just Joss Sticks and Jazz

Answer: Godbluff

Van der Graaf Generator formed in 1967 in Manchester and are still going strong as I write in 2011, despite being inactive between 1972 and 1975, then again 1978 to 2005. "Godbluff" didn't differ drastically from the sound of the first incarnation of the band and was still led by David Jackson's sax as opposed to a lead guitar. One of the band's mainstays, Peter Hammill, has also had a prolific solo career, both alongside Van Der Graaf and during the band's hiatuses. Van Der Graaf are one of the few prog rock bands who garnered respect from punk rockers and their offspring, John Lydon of Sex Pistols fame publicly admitting a penchant for the band, and Manchester-born band The Fall echoing "Godbluff"'s sleeve on "Fall Heads Roll". "Present" was Van Der Graaf's 2005 comeback album, "Fool's Mate" was Peter Hammill's first solo effort and "Desperate Straights" was Slapp Happy/Henry Cow's 1975 album.

3. Starting off easy...which popular prog rock band recorded the song containing this lyric: "Lost in the sky, clouds roll by and I roll with them"?

From Quiz Progressive Rock Song Lyrics 1

Answer: Dream Theater

From the song "Pull Me Under" off of the album "Images & Words". By far Dream Theater's most popular song to date.

4. What is the missing lyric here? "Sitting on a __________ Eyeing little girls with bad intent."

From Quiz Progressive Rock: Missing Lyrics

Answer: Park bench

Hopefully that was an easy start. If not, you should check out Jethro Tull. These are the memorable opening lines from Jethro Tull's 'Aqualung,' which follow the equally memorable guitar riff. This song was written by flautist/vocalist Ian Anderson and his then-wife Jennie about a homeless man, based on a photograph she had taken. This is the title track to the landmark album which perhaps saw Tull's first steps into the world of Prog Rock.

5. What was Yes' first album called?

From Quiz Prog Rock for the Masses 3

Answer: Yes

Many people believe that "The Yes Album" was Yes' first LP. It was actually their third, but the first to feature guitarist Steve Howe, who replaced Peter Banks. Banks went on to form the short lived band Flash.

6. This prog rock album includes the instrumental piece, "Any Colour You Like".

From Quiz Prog Rock for the Masses [2]

Answer: Dark Side of the Moon

Recorded and released by Pink Floyd in 1973, "Dark Side of the Moon" is one of the all time best selling albums. It is definitely the best selling Prog Rock album of all time.. The album was recorded at Abbey Road studio 2 in London and was produced by Alan Parsons. "A Passion Play" is the 1973 album by Jethro Tull. "Vulture Blood" is the 1970 release by Warhorse. "Surrealistic Pillow" is the 1967 debut album by San Fransisco Psychadelic rockers Jefferson Airplane.

7. Keith Emerson is known for his piano chops with ELP, but started out with which band?

From Quiz Prog Rock for the Masses [1]

Answer: The Nice

The Nice were: Keith Emerson: Organ, piano, vocals - (born 2 November 1944 in Todmorden, Yorkshire) Keith "Lee" Jackson: Bass, guitar, vocals - (born 8 January 1943, in Newcastle upon Tyne) David "Davy" O'List: Guitar, vocals (1967-68) - (born 13 December 1948, in Chiswick, London) Brian "Blinky" Davison: Drums, percussion - (born 25 May 1942, in Leicester, Leicestershire - died 15 April 2008) Famous for their arrangement of Leonard Bernstein's "America" from "West Side Story".

8. Please fill in the missing word from the title of the first King Crimson album: "In the _____ of the Crimson King"

From Quiz Progressive Rock Album Titles 1

Answer: court

The full title of the album is "In the Court of the Crimson King an Observation by King Crimson". This is the first studio album by King Crimson, released in 1969. The lineup consisted of Robert Fripp (guitar), Ian McDonald (reeds, woodwind, vibes, keyboards, mellotron, vocals), Greg Lake (bass guitar, lead vocals), Michael Giles (drums, percussion, vocals), and Peter Sinfield (words and illumination). All this taken from the liner notes of the 2004 original master edition cd. Here is an excerpt of the title track "The Court of the Crimson King" containing the title: "On soft grey mornings widows cry, The wise men share a joke; I run to grasp divining signs To satisfy the hoax. The yellow jester does not play But gently pulls the strings And smiles as the puppets dance In the court of the crimson king."

9. Which song by Pink Floyd contains these lyrics? "I'm in the hi-fidelity first class travelling set And I think I need a Lear jet."

From Quiz Progressive Rock Big Six Lyrics 3

Answer: Money

From the album "The Dark Side of the Moon." According to Wikipedia, this album was on the U.S. chart for a record 741 weeks.

10. Which song by Genesis contains these lyrics? "A world full of people their hearts full of joy, Cities of light with no fear of war, And thousands of creatures with happier lives, And dreams of a future with meaning and no need to hide."

From Quiz Progressive Rock Big Six Lyrics 2

Answer: Keep it Dark

This song appears on "Abacab" and was released as a single in 1982. According to Wikipedia, the album peaked at number seven on the U.S. chart. "Abacab" was the third album by the lineup of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks. There are more pop-oriented songs on "Abacab" than its predecessor "Duke." However, even at their height of popularity, Genesis continued putting progressive tracks on their albums.

11. Jethro Tull won the Grammy for Best Hard Rock/Metal album in 1989 for this album.

From Quiz Progressive Rock Big Six

Answer: Crest of a Knave

This is a pretty good album! Check out the tracks "Farm on the Freeway" and "Budapest". The cd also contains the excellent bonus track "Part of the Machine". It's puzzling why it won the Grammy for best heavy metal album since I wouldn't consider any track on the album to be heavy metal.

12. Which instrument was invented by the Shulman Brothers of Gentle Giant?

From Quiz Prog, Not Prague

Answer: The Shulberry

Odd little stringed thing, you can hear brother Derek play it on some of their albums. The banjar was invented by Roy Wood, and the mellophone is a marching instrument similar to a bugle or trumpet- Phil Shulman plays one on the album "Octopus".

13. Core members of this German avant-garde 1970's band included Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli, Jaki Liebzeit and Irmin Schmidt. Name the band.

From Quiz Progresive and Neo-Progressive Rock

Can's music had more in common with contemporary classic composition than it did with most rock of its era (1968-1978), but it's well worth checking out if you're a bit adventurous.

17. In 1979 a progressive music LP was released on the private Baal label. There is a statue on the front cover with a tear running down its face. Who is this LP credited to?

From Quiz Progressive Music Bands And Their Record Albums

Answer: Easter Island

This LP was released by the heavy progressive band Easter Island. The band was from Fort Knox, Kentucky and their music seems to be influenced by the bands King Crimson, Yes, and Emerson, Lake, And Palmer. There was a lot of emphasis on mini-moog and Mellotron as was typical of 1970s progressive music.

18. Who recorded this lyric: "I always feel like nothing when I'm in the dark alone"?

From Quiz Progressive Rock Song Lyrics 1

Answer: Marillion

From the song "Neverland" off of the album "Marbles". Steve "Mr. H" Hogarth performed the vocals on this track, whereas in earlier years, Fish was the lead vocalist for Marillion.

19. What is missing here? "The _____________ does not play But gently pulls the strings And smiles as the puppets dance In the court of the crimson king"

From Quiz Progressive Rock: Missing Lyrics

Answer: Yellow Jester

One of King Crimson's early pieces off their debut album, this is 'The Court Of The Crimson King.' The song is dominated by a distinct mellotron riff and Greg Lake's powerful vocal performance. After just one album, the group fell apart with Greg joining ELP and Ian McDonald eventually joining Foreigner. Guitarist Robert Fripp kept the Crimson name alive however, despite his inability to maintain a line-up. The lyrics to this epic track convey a range of colourful images such as the "purple piper," "yellow jester," "black queen," "evergreen," "grey mornings," and the "Crimson King," which, according to lyricist Pete Sinfield, is the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II rather than the devil, whom it is often said to represent.

20. Which 20 minute Prog piece did Dream Theater keyboard player Jordan Rudess cover on his 2007 solo album, "The Road Home"?

From Quiz Prog Rock for the Masses 3

Answer: "Tarkus" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer

The album covered classic Prog tracks, with new arrangements by Rudess.

21. This was Jethro Tull's sixth album, mostly known for the bad reviews it got when it was released, although it did reach number one in the US album chart.

From Quiz Prog Rock for the Masses [1]

Answer: A Passion Play

Released in 1973, this was Tull's second concept album, the first being "Thick as a Brick".

22. Please fill in the missing word from the title of this classic Yes album: "Close to the _____"

From Quiz Progressive Rock Album Titles 1

Answer: edge

The lineup on this record consisted of Jon Anderson (vocals), Bill Bruford (drums), Rick Wakeman (Keyboards), Steve Howe (guitar), and Chris Squire (bass). The album itself from 1972 consists of only three tracks: "Close to the Edge", "And You and I", and "Siberian Khatru". The track "Close to the Edge" takes up an entire album side, but has been performed live on many occasions. You can find live versions of it on "Yessongs" (1973), "An Evening of Yes Music Plus" (1994), and "Keys to Ascension 2" (1997). Note that "An Evening of Yes Music Plus" is Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe, so it's actually not Yes.

23. Which song by Genesis contains the following lyrics? "This is an announcement from Genetic Control: 'It is my sad duty to inform you of a 4 ft restriction on humanoid height.'"

From Quiz Progressive Rock Big Six Lyrics 4

Answer: Get 'Em Out by Friday

This song appears on "Foxtrot" from 1972. In the lyrics contained in the liner notes of the cd, this announcement came on September 18, 2012 as a "TV flash on all dial-a-program services." Later in the song, Joe Ordinary comments, "It is said now that people will be shorter in height, they can fit twice as many in the same building site" This album contains the line up of Peter Gabriel (vocals), Michael Rutherford (bass and guitar), Steve Hackett (guitar), Tony Banks (keyboards), and Phil Collins (drums).

24. Which song by Jethro Tull contains these lyrics? "I'll buy you six bay mares, to put in your stable; Six golden apples bought with my pay. I am the first piper who calls the sweet tune But I must be gone by the seventh day."

From Quiz Progressive Rock Big Six Lyrics 2

Answer: The Whistler

This can be found on the album "Songs from the Wood." This song would be considered "folk rock."

25. Which song by King Crimson contains these lyrics? "Talk, talk, it's only talk Debates, discussions These are words with a 'D' this time Dialogue, duologue, diatribe Dissension, declamation Double talk, double talk..."

From Quiz Progressive Rock Big Six Lyrics 1

Answer: Elephant Talk

This is a great song that appears on "Discipline." This lineup of King Crimson consisted of Robert Fripp (guitar), Adrian Belew (guitar), Tony Levin (bass), and Bill Bruford (drums). This was the first King Crimson album to contain Adrian Belew. According to Wikipedia, "Discipline" peaked at number 45 on the U.S. chart. My other answers weren't names of King Crimson songs. "Talk Talk" was a hit by The Music Machine and "Dialogue" is a song by Chicago. "Double Talk" I made up.

26. This is the first album recorded after keyboardist Rick Wakeman left Yes. He was replaced by Patrick Moraz. Side one of the album consisted of only one track which was over twenty minutes long.

From Quiz Progressive Rock Big Six

Answer: Relayer

Like "Close to the Edge", this album by Yes has only three tracks: "The Gates of Delirium", "Sound Chaser", and "To Be Over." "The Gates of Delirium" was side one. The album itself takes a more fusion direction than the other Yes albums of the seventies. The song "Sound Chaser" is in my opinion one of Yes' best. This album has moments of brilliance and is highly recommended!

27. When bassist Kevin Ayers left the Soft Machine to become a guitarist/singer/songwriter on his own, he was replaced by the phenomenal Hugh Hopper. What was his connection to the band before he joined as a full-time bass player?

From Quiz Prog, Not Prague

Answer: Roadie

It pays to be a roadie. Hawkwind and Motorhead member Lemmy also started as a roadie to the stars, including Jimi Hendrix and Keith Emerson. Hopper also wrote some of the songs on their first album before he became a full time member.

28. This Australian ex-patriot was an original member of early RIO pioneers Soft Machine. He was stranded in France due to visa problems and later founded one of the most influental space rock bands. Name him.
