Answer: Helloween

Helloween, one of my all time favourite bands, could be classed as one of the originators of power metal. The other three bands have members who are, or have been, part of Helloween.

2. Which guitarist left Helloween and formed Masterplan in 2001, along with drummer Uli Kusch?

Answer: Roland Grapow

Both Roland and Uli formed Masterplan after leaving Helloween. Kai Hansen, one of the original members, left Helloween in 1989 and formed the excellent Gamma Ray. Jens Ludwig is the lead guitarist with the band Edguy. Sascha Gerstner replaced Roland in Helloween.

3. The group Demons & Wizards is a side project of two "giants" of the power metal scene. It is an almagamation of guitarist Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth and the vocalist of which band?

Answer: Blind Guardian

The vocalist in question is Hansi Kursch and the pair have had connections for a long time. As well as the fantasy based songs that Blind Guardian perform, especially based on J. R. R. Tolkein's books, the band also have covered some "oldies", such as "Mr Sandman" and "Surfin' USA", with humorous and heavy results!

4. The albums "Border Of Reality", "Bleed" and "Enlighten The Darkness" are three albums from the back catalogue of this group who reformed themselves as a power band in 1998?

Answer: Angel Dust

Angel Dust were originally a thrash band in the 80's who disappeared from the scene in 1990. In 1998 they made a comeback with the power metal album "Border Of Reality". "Bleed" and "Enlighten The Darkness" were released in 1999 and 2000 respectively.

5. This guitarist was a former member of Steeler before going solo in 1989. His albums include "Oceans Of Time", "Mystica" and "Black Moon Pyramid" and show his full range of styles.

Answer: Axel Rudi Pell

Axel Rudi Pell is my all time favourite guitarist. He can be intricate whilst not being over indulgent on one song and then "rock out" with the best of them on the next. He has had former "Hardline" singer Joey Gioeli in the band from the 1998 "Oceans Of Time" Album. Yngwie Malmsteen also used to be a member of Steeler before pursuing a solo career. Rudolph Schenker is founding member of the Scorpions, while Herman Li is in the band DragonForce.

6. Herman Li is a founding member of the incredibly fast power metal band DragonForce. Their speed is astonishing and one of their songs - "Through The Fire And Flames" appears in the video game, "Guitar Hero". What nationality are DragonForce?

Answer: British

DragonForce are one of the few power bands to come out of the UK. This is very strange as many of the current crop of bands are heavily influenced by Iron Maiden, whose sound, especially on the "Piece Of Mind" and "Powerslave" albums is absolute power metal!

7. Who is the vocalist with the Finnish band Nightwish who also recorded the album, "Dark Passion Play"?

Answer: Anette Olzon

Nightwish have changed their female vocalist with Anette Olzon performing on the fantastic "Dark Passion Play". Former singer Tarja Turunen left the band in 2005 atfter six studio albums. Timo Kotielto is the front man of Stratovarius while Tomi Putaabsuu is more recognisable as the singer in the band Lordi, winners of the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest for Finland.

8. Which band did vocalist Ralf Scheepers become the front man of in 1997 following his departure from Gamma Ray?

Answer: Primal Fear

The former Tyran Pace' and Gamma Ray singer went on to form Primal Fear in 1997, a member of which is the influential Mat Sinner. Ralf had auditioned for the vacant position in Judas Priest after Rob Halford left the band and reached the final three before losing out to Tim "Ripper" Owens. Iron Savior featured the founder of Gamma Ray, Kai Hansen, from 1997 to the "Dark Assault" album in 2001 and was co-founded by singer Piet Sielck . Avantasia is an almagamation of power metal musicians headed by vocalist Tobias Sammet.

9. As well as creating Avantasia, Tobias Sammet is more well known for being the lead singer of which German power metal band?

Answer: Edguy

Tobias Sammet has been the frontman of Edguy since their formation in 1992. Mob Rules vocalist is Klaus Dirks, Grave Diggers is Chris Boltendahl and At Vance has been led by Oliver Hartmann, who guested in Avantasia, Mats Levin and Rick Altzi.

10. Iced Earth released a double CD live album (or a limited edition triple CD one) recorded in 1999 during their "Something Wicked This Way Comes" tour. The Album was called "Alive in ..." In which European capital was the concert recorded to complete the album title

Answer: Athens

The album was recorded from the concerts of January 23rd and 24th at the Rodon Club in Athens, Greece. They also later released a DVD of the concert in 2006. I'm lucky enough to own the triple CD version and it ranks as one of the best "live" albums I've ever heard and a real tribute to a fantastic and underrated band.
