Punk Rock Trivia Questions

1. Which rock star-turned-producer produced the Dead Boys' second album "We Have Come For Your Children"?

From Quiz
Punk: Dead Or Alive? Part II

Answer: Felix Pappalardi (Mountain)

Dead Boys guitarist Chrome slams the album, due to its production, in his hilarious autobiography "A Dead Boy's Tale". To my ears it's still a pinnacle of US punk, despite the fact that Pappalardi was blatantly out of his depth and misunderstood the bands' raison d'ĂȘtre. Pappalardi also produced Cream and Hot Tuna, much more within his range. Rik Ocasek produced hardcore band Bad Brains' debut album, "Rock For Light". Alex Chiltern produced The Cramps' debut, "Songs The Lord Taught Us". Todd Rundgren has produced a host of bands, including The New York Dolls, The Tubes and Bad Religion.

2. Which UK punk band named their debut album "City Baby Attacked by Rats" after seeing it as a headline in their local newspaper?

From Quiz Punk: Dead Or Alive?

Answer: Charged GBH

I wondered for years what it meant, especially as the follow up album, "City Baby's Revenge" continued the saga. Vocalist Colin explains : "We were walking to a pub when we passed the little kiosk that sells our local paper, the Birmingham Evening Mail, and as usual they had a poster with the daily headline written in magic marker behind a metal grille. It said "CITY BABY ATTACKED BY RATS" and Jock (guitarist) remarked "what a great song title". I stole the poster and still have it somewhere in my loft, it should make me a few quid when Sotherby's have their next rock memorabilia auction!" (Burning Britain: The History Of UK Punk 1980 - 1984) The story is reminiscent of how fellow Brummies Black Sabbath got their name, but that's another story.

3. Dead Kennedys - "Vacation in the Land of the Khmer"

From Quiz In Other Words: Classic Punk Songs

Answer: Holiday in Cambodia

"Holiday in Cambodia" was released in May of 1980 by the Dead Kennedys, a U.S. punk band fronted by Jello Biafra. It can also be found on the band's first album, "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables." The album was ranked 46th in "Spin" magazine's "50 Most Essential Punk Records" list, with "Holiday in Cambodia," "Kill the Poor," "Viva Las Vegas," "California Uber Alles," and "Chemical Warfare" being frequently pointed to as influential tracks. "Holiday in Cambodia" is also somewhat famous because songwriter Jello Biafra was sued by former members because he did not allow the song to be used in a Dockers slacks commercial!

4. Which band sings this song? "Chewing out a rhythm on my bubble gum The sun is out and I want some It's not hard, not far to reach We can hitch a ride To Rockaway Beach"

5. What was the name of the girl in the song "Riot Girl" by Good Charlotte on "The Young And The Hopeless"?

From Quiz Punk / Rock Girls

Answer: her name's not mentioned

This song is about the band's version of a punk rock girl. "Good punk rock girls are hard to find. They're always mean." - Benji, GC's lead guitarist

6. "I am an anarchist." If you can't name the seminal punk band who sings this line, please stop taking this quiz right now.

From Quiz So You Think You're Punk

Answer: Sex Pistols

The Sex Pistols were almost punk's first boy band, as their manager Malcolm McLaren put them together, chose their outfits, and ran a fantastic marketing campaign. Unfortunately, like the New Kids on the Block of later years, fame isn't always enough to keep a band together.

19. Which US punk band were fronted by Lee Ving, who appeared in the film "Flashdance" as a strip club owner?

From Quiz Punk: Dead Or Alive? Part II

Answer: Fear

Fear formed in 1977. They appeared in the film "The Decline of Western Civilization" and quickly gained a reputation for their rambunctious performances. They also came to the attention of actor/comedian John Belushi, who personally championed the band and got them on "Saturday Night Live". Their wild sense of comedy gained them as many enemies as fans, songs like "New York's Alright If You Like Saxophones" and "Let's Start A War" not exactly currying favour amongst the more po-faced in the punk scene. The band are mentioned in Brett Easton Ellis' novel "Less Than Zero", playing at a party. In the film version the Red Hot Chili Peppers (whose bassist, Flea, had a stint in "Fear") were filmed for the sequence, but it was cut from the final edit.

20. Which UK punk band's singer published his book "The Primal Screamer" in 1995?

From Quiz Punk: Dead Or Alive?

Answer: Rudimentary Peni

Rudimentary Peni carved out a niché for themselves, partly because nobody has ever sounded even remotely like them, and also due to vocalist/guitarist Nick Blinko's distinctive lyrics and artwork. They have never split up since forming in 1980, although they only record sporadically. About the semi-autobiographical novel Blinko says : "The fun is trying to figure out what's true and what isn't! I did used to collect fungi spore patterns, and I did play chess for the county third team, and I continue to aspire to mediocrity. Regression therapy - a cornerstone of the book - seems to skew the imagination occasionally, highlighting old paths in new lights; that is to say, it's not a self-help piece". (The Day The Country Died by Ian Glasper) Blinko has also published other work and exhibited as an artist.

21. Iggy and the Stooges - "Look for and Annihilate"

From Quiz In Other Words: Classic Punk Songs

Answer: Search and Destroy

"Search and Destroy" is from the 1973 album by the Stooges, "Raw Power." Its title refers to the Vietnam War. Iggy Pop and James Williamson are the writers. The song is ranked 468th on "Rolling Stone" magazine's 2004 list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time," and the network VH1 named it "the 49th best hard rock song of all time." It's been covered by numerous bands, including the Sex Pistols and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

22. What was the name of the girl in the song "Amphetamine" by Everclear on "So Much For The Afterglow"?

23. This band was from New York City, and were noted as being one of the worst bands out there; even the owner of CBGB's said they would be hated by everyone, since they couldn't play. Name this band, who just wanted to be "sedated".
