Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was 'Fly By Night' recorded?

Answer: Toronto Sound Studios

All of Rush's first four albums was recorded at Toronto Sound (with the exception of a few of the sessions for the debut which were recorded at Eastern Sound). The first studio album to be recorded outside of Toronto was 'A Farewell to Kings.'
2. Who coined the names 'By-Tor and the Snow Dog'?

Answer: Howard Ungerleider

'By-Tor and the Snow Dog' were the names given by Howard to the two dogs owned by Rush manager Ray Danniels. On the sleeve of 'Fly By Night', Alex Lifeson was called 'Snow Dog' while Geddy Lee was 'By-Tor'.
3. On the original vinyl copies of 'Fly By Night', what was unusual about 'By-Tor and the Snow Dog'?

Answer: The song never ends.

The chimes at the conclusion of the song are cut into the run-out groove with the result that, on certain record decks, the song could play forever. This was not repeated on the vinyl copies of 'Archives'.
4. Who painted the cover of 'Fly By Night'?

Answer: Eraldo Carugati

Carugati later went on to paint the covers of the solo albums by the four members of Kiss.
5. When was 'Fly By Night' released?.

Answer: February 15, 1975

Strangely enough, the tour to promote 'Fly By Night' began in Toronto the night before.
6. Did Rush support Blue Oyster Cult on the 'Fly By Night' tour?

Answer: No

Blue Oyster Cult opened for Rush on this tour. The bands that Rush supported were Sky King, KISS, The Kidds, The Tubes, and Aerosmith.
7. Original copies of 'Fly By Night' came with a sheet featuring Neil Peart's handwritten copies of the lyrics. According to these sheets, where was 'In the End' written?

Answer: Toronto

Other songs from the album written in Toronto are 'Anthem' (Tornto and Beamsville), 'Beneath, Between and Behind' (Seattle and Toronto), 'Fly By Night (Lansing and Toronto), 'Best I Can'(Toronto) and 'By Tor and the Snow Dog' (Los Angeles, Cleveland and Toronto). 'Making Memories' was written in Los Angeles and St Louis while 'Rivendell' was written in Beamsville and Columbus.
8. Who produced 'Fly By Night'?

Answer: Terry Brown and Rush

This was Terry Brown's first credit as full producer ( he was only credited with remixing the first album). He would go on to co-produce 8 of their next 9 albums (he was given a solo production credit on 'Exit...Stage Left'), the last of which was 'Signals'.
9. What was the first Rush song Neil Peart wrote the lyrics for?

Answer: Fly By Night

Originally, the song featured a prologue which was never recorded.
10. Has 'Rivendell' ever been played live?

Answer: No

The only Rush albums where every song has been played live are 'Hemispheres', 'Moving Pictures', 'Grace Under Pressure', and, possibly, 'Caress of Steel' (see question 18 for more details).
11. Who designed the cover for 'Caress of Steel'?

Answer: Hugh Syme

Hugh Syme has become closely linked with Rush. As well as designing the majority of the their artwork, he has been featured as guest musician on 'Tears', 'Different Strings' and 'Witch Hunt'.
12. To whom was 'Caress of Steel' dedicated?

Answer: Rod Serling

Rod Serling (1924-1975) is best known as the creator of TV series 'The Twilight Zone', episodes of which provided the inspiration for the song of the same name on the '2112' album.
13. When was 'Caress of Steel' released?

Answer: September 1975

Both 'Fly By Night' and 'Caress of Steel' were released in 1975, the only time Rush have released two studio albums in the same year.
14. What Latin phrase is written on the sleeve of 'Caress of Steel.?

Answer: Terminat hora diem; terminat auctor opus

Roughly translated, it means 'As the hour ends the day, the author ends his work.' I have no idea as to the origin of the phrase (if anyone does know, please let ME know.)
15. By what name did the 'Caress of Steel' tour become known?

Answer: Down the Tubes Tour

"We called it the 'Down The Tubes Tour', we joked about it amoung ourselves. By the end of the that year we were unable to pay our crew's salaries - or our own." - Neil Peart, Classic Rock, Oct. 2004.
16. Did Rush support Kiss on the 'Caress of Steel' tour?

Answer: Yes

Apparently Kiss were so impressed with Rush on the 'Fly By Night' tour that they invited them back.
17. Did the 'Caress of Steel' tour reach Europe?

Answer: No

Rush's first concert outside of North America was June 1, 1977 at Sheffield City Hall, England on the 'All the World's a Stage' Tour.
18. What problem arose with the cover to 'Caress of Steel'?

Answer: It was printed in the wrong colours.

'When the jackets were printed, the colour separation people botched the job, much as they had with the first album. Hugh's rather striking idea of doing the front cover in a glaring steel tone was translated to a brass or copperish colour. Since the new colour had nothing to do with steel, the entire cover concept was ruined. By the time the band saw what had happened hundreds of thousands of the foldout covers had been printed and it would have been too expensive at this stage in Rush's career to reprint them.'

Bill Banasiewicz, Visions: A Rush Biography.
19. Have Rush played 'The Fountain of Lamneth' live?

Answer: No one knows for certain.

Details of the set lists for the 'Caress of Steel' tour are sketchy. The members of the band have said they can't remember what they played and, in such situations, bootleg recordings are usually the only evidence to go on. The only 'Caress of Steel' boot in circulation is from November 15 when they supported Kiss.

However, there are unconfirmed rumours of a headline bootleg from January 10, 1976 which featured, along with 'The Fountain of Lamneth', versions of 'I Think I'm Going Bald' and 'Making Memories', all of which are unavailable on other boots.
20. Where do the travellers in 'The Necromancer' come from?

Answer: Willowdale

Willowdale is actually a district of Toronto where Geddy and Alex lived as children.
