Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Hate me, take me over."

Answer: Break Me Shake Me

Though "Break Me Shake Me" never released as a single in North America it was technically Savage Garden's fourth single track, charting in Australia and Europe and doing moderately well as a pop-dance release in 1997 and 1998. As with many of their other tracks from their debut album, Savage Garden took all the angles; they not only had separate releases in different years for different markets, but they ended up creating multiple music videos for the track, creating different images of the band in Australia and overseas.

The latter version was done in promotion of their world tour, the Future of Earthly Delites/To the Moon and Back Tour, which was in support of their first album.
2. "Move. Closer. Passion. Stronger."

Answer: Carry On Dancing

It was difficult to pass up the opportunity to place a bit more of a deeper cut into all of this. "Carry On Dancing" was a track in the minority on Savage Garden's eponymous debut album; of the twelve songs on the original Australian version of the album, eight became singles.

It's not too surprising since "Carry On Dancing" would have fallen a bit more into the dance genre. The sweeping synths and pleading vocals didn't lend the track to radio play quite as well as their uptempo pop hits and melodramatic ballads.
3. "I want to run through the jungle, the wind in my hair and the sand at my feet."

Answer: The Animal Song

Originally written with the aim to be used in film soundtracks, "The Animal Song" ended up being the first single from Savage Garden's second album, "Affirmation", instead. It ended up being a good move for the duo, at least in Australia, because while it didn't reach the heights of some of their earlier songs, it hit number three on the ARIA Charts.

It peaked at number nineteen on the U.S. Hot 100, managing to chart before "Tears of Pearls", the final single from their first album, even made it to the radio.
4. "That's why she shies away from human affection."

Answer: To the Moon and Back

The first Savage Garden song to top the charts in their home country, Australia, "To the Moon and Back" received Platinum status Down Under and in the UK. Although it didn't find as much popularity in the U.S., the song received a fair amount of airplay upon its release as a single in late 1996; their first album would hit the shelves only a few months later and drop an additional six radio tracks. Like "I Want You", the duo re-released this track in 1998 in an attempt to recapture the audience; it allowed "To the Moon and Back" to hit number three on the UK Singles Chart.
5. "I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye."

Answer: Affirmation

Reaching number eight on the UK Singles Chart and number sixteen on the ARIA Chart in Australia, "Affirmation" was the fourth single from Savage Garden's second album and the first in the last run of tracks they would send to radio (though it wouldn't catch in the U.S.).

The song is a catchy one, uptempo all the way and characterized by repetitive lyrics; every line of the song starts with the words "I believe...."
6. "In the base of my spine, sweet like a chick-a-cherry cola."

Answer: I Want You

Ah yes, the song that kicked off Savage Garden's supremacy of the pop charts in the mid-to-late 1990s. "I Want You" managed to hit five different charts in the U.S. (hitting number one on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40) and hit number one in Canada.

The track ended up being the perfect lead-in for Hayes and Jones, allowing them to garner traction as their debut album released single after single. An uptempo song with significant synth elements, "I Want You" would be rereleased internationally in 1998, re-charting in the UK.
7. "I know that it might sound more than a little crazy but I believe."

Answer: I Knew I Loved You

The biggest hit from Savage Garden's "Affirmation" album, "I Knew I Loved You" managed to hit the same sort of chords that made "Truly Madly Deeply" so popular only a couple of years earlier. Released towards the end of 1999, it hit number one on three U.S. Billboard Charts and two Canadian charts (though it didn't beat "The Animal Song" in Australia).

It also managed to make it to the top of several year-end charts in these countries and more (all the way into 2001), notably becoming the top song on the Billboard U.S. Adult Contemporary Charts for the entire decade spanning 2000-2009.
8. "If you need to fall apart, I can mend a broken heart."

Answer: Crash and Burn

The last single from "Affirmation" to chart in the U.S., "Crash and Burn" was the last stand for Savage Garden in North America. While it made its way up several Billboard Charts (including the year-end charts for 2000), the band would break up shortly after with Darren Hayes going solo and Daniel Jones moving into music production.

Interestingly, in the U.S., "Crash and Burn" was on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Airplay Chart at the same time as "Truly Madly Deeply", which remained there for going-on five years, a record for any charting song in the U.S.
9. "Bitterness has silenced these emotions."

Answer: Hold Me

Though Savage Garden's final single release would be "The Best Thing" in 2001, "Hold Me" was the last one to chart in several countries, appearing in spots well below the top ten in Australia and most of Europe. By this point in Savage Garden's life as a musical act, Hayes and Jones would be concluding their second of two world tours, the Affirmation World Tour, in support of their last album.

It would be less than a year before the two would dissolve the band. Hayes would continue with "Affirmation's" producer, Walter Afanasieff, to create his first solo album, "Spin".
10. "I wanna stand with you on a mountain."

Answer: Truly Madly Deeply

Though a number of tracks in the Savage Garden discography might hit different people in different ways, it would be hard to suggest that "Truly Madly Deeply" wasn't their biggest hit. The song topped three of the five Billboard Charts it was on in the U.S. and hit number one in Australia and Canada. Because of its immense popularity throughout 1997 and 1998 it also appeared on year-end charts in a dozen countries and became one of the most significant pop ballads of the decade.
