Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In her all too brief lifetime, Janis Joplin recorded several major hits. One of her most well-known is "Me and Bobby McGee". Who wrote this ditty for Janis?

Answer: Kris Kristofferson

Two other people, besides Kristofferson and Joplin, recorded the song: Roger Miller and Gordon Lightfoot. However, Joplin's is by far the most memorable. It was also reached Number One after Joplin's death; this made her the second singer to reach Number One posthumously. The other was Otis Redding for "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay."
2. In the mid-80s, a funk band called The Family recorded the tune "Nothing Compares 2 U" but it went nowhere. A few years later, the tune was recorded by Sinead O'Connor and became a hit. Who wrote "Nothing Compares 2 U"?

Answer: Prince

Sinead O'Connor is just one in a long line of women singers who recorded Prince's songs or collaborated with him. Others include Vanity 6, Sheila E, Sheena Easton and The Bangles.
3. Put on your platform shoes: We're going back to the early 70s when "All the Young Dudes" was a hit for Mott the Hoople. Can you name the mega-star who wrote that tune?

Answer: David Bowie

Bowie was very impressed with Mott the Hoople's music, and was upset to learn that the band was breaking up. He approached them with this song and offered to produce their next album. The album, "All the Young Dudes" was a commercial and critical hit. However, it did not salvage the group which disbanded soon after.
4. The late Harry Nilsson, who penned the classic tune about putting the lime in the coconut, was a fairly accomplished singer/songwriter in his own time. But his biggest hit was a song called "Without You" which hit Number One on the Billboard chart in 1971. (Remember? "Can't live if living is without you"?) But the song was actually written by the songwriting team of Peter Ham and Tom Evans. Ham and Evans, however, were the songwriting duo for another popular group of that era. Their band also recorded the song. Which band did Ham and Evans belong to?

Answer: Badfinger

Peter Ham's lyrics for the song were directed at his girlfriend, as their relationship deteriorated. Badfinger's version has a lot more edges than Nilsson's symphonic take.
5. In the early 70s, the band Badfinger had a huge hit with the song "Come and Get It" which was written for the movie "The Magic Christian". But they didn't write the song. Which former Beatle did?

Answer: Paul McCartney

McCartney originally recorded the song--in a simplified version--while The Beatles were recording "Abbey Road". Having a great respect for Badfinger (who, at that time were called The Iveys, after a street in Wales), he offered them this tune that would become their anthem.
6. Patti Smith's fan base has usually been an underground one. However, she did hit the Billboard chart in 1978 with "Because the Night". However, this song was her re-vamping of an already existing tune by another singer/songwriter. Who wrote the original "Because the Night"?

Answer: Bruce Springsteen

According to rock and roll "history", Springsteen thought about recording this track as he was putting the final touches on his album, "Darkness at the Edge of Town". But as he laid down the track for "Because the Night", he felt that it didn't fit in with the album's feel and sound. Smith was recording an album in the same building at the same time. Springsteen popped in and, supposedly, handed her the song which she did in her own way. Years later, 10,000 Maniacs performed the song live on MTV.
7. British rocker Dave Edmunds has a career that spans back to 1968. His one significant hit was 1979's "Girl's Talk". Guess what? He didn't write it. Who did?

Answer: Elvis Costello

Dave Edmunds was one of those creative individuals that, for some reason, fame eluded. He had a string of hits and worked with musicians ranging from Paul McCartney to Jeff Lynne. With his pub rock roots, Edmunds was a natural fit with Elvis Costello whose early career leaned towards the rock and roll of the late 50s to early 60s.
8. You would think with all their songwriting firepower and talent that The Beatles would never record someone else's song. However, their album "Beatles '65" contains four cover tunes. One of them was "Honey Don't", written by one of rockabilly's kings. Who wrote "Honey Don't"?

Answer: Carl Perkins

There were two Carl Perkins' songs on the album: "Honey Don't" and "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby". The other covers are Chuck Berry's "Rock and Roll Music" and "Mr. Moonlight" by Roy Lee Johnson.
9. In the mid 80s, the pop group Power Station found themselves at the top of the chart. Comprised of accomplished songwriters like Robert Palmer, Andy and John Taylor (of Duran Duran), and Tony Thompson the band experienced phenomenal success. Their biggest hit, "Get It On (Bang a Gong)" was a huge hit for someone else in the early '70s. Who wrote the song?

Answer: Marc Bolan

There's something universal about Marc Bolan's T. Rex song, "Get It On (Bang a Gong)"; several recording artists have covered it. While it is acknowledged to be the trademark "glam" song of the 70s, Bolan claimed it was his attempt to emulate Chuck Berry's "Little Queenie".
10. Whitney Houston holds the record for the most consecutive Number One records: seven. One of her biggest hits was 1992's soulful "I Will Always Love You". The tune was actually penned years earlier by one of country music's greatest icons. Who was it?

Answer: Dolly Parton

Without argument, Dolly Parton would have been just as famous for being a great songwriter, even if she had never put her lips close to a microphone. Her songwriting credits include: "Here You Come Again", "Jolene", and "9 to 5" which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song from a Movie.
