Producers & Record Labels Writers Trivia Questions

1. Who was "Sittin' In The Balcony" in 1957?

From Quiz
The Songs of John D. Loudermilk

Answer: Eddie Cochran

"Sittin' In The Balcony" peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 for Eddie Cochran in 1957. It did not chart on the UK Singles Chart. "Sittin' In The Balcony" peaked at numnber 38 for Johhny Dee (John D. Loudermilk) on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1957. It did not chart on the UK Singles Chart. Don McLean sang a version of "Sittin' In The Balcony" on his 1989 album "For The Memories Vols I & II" Danish singer Keld Heick sang a version of "Sittin' In The Balcony" in 2010.

2. "Slip Slidin' Away" songwriter Paul Simon was asked on BBC TV how much he missed ex-partner Art Garfunkel's contribution to the songwriting process. What did he reply?

From Quiz Slip Sliding Away

Answer: "That was never a writing partnership"

Simon and Garfunkel were a highly successful performing partnership, with hits like "The Sound of Silence", "Mrs Robinson" and "I Am a Rock". But theirs was not a songwriting partnership - that was all Paul Simon. When Simon told Anne Nightingale in an interview on "The Old Grey Whistle Test" that he wrote all their songs, she seemed to think she had a scoop, asking: "Is that generally known?". "I think almost everyone but you, Anne," came the reply. Simon wrote "Slip Slidin' Away" for his 1977 "Greatest Hits, Etc." compilation album.

3. The Shirelles became the first all-girl group to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, when they took this song to the top of the chart in 1961. What's the name of this tune?

From Quiz The Songs of Gerry Goffin and Carole King

Answer: Will You Love Me Tomorrow

"Will You Love Me Tomorrow" was one of the first songs that Goffin and King collaborated on, and it was by far their biggest hit up to this point. Although other all-female musical acts had U.S. number one hits prior to this, The Shirelles were the first to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, which debuted on August 4, 1958. The song has been covered numerous times since 1961, but in my opinion the best version was recorded by King herself for her 1971 landmark LP "Tapestry".

4. The Stone Poneys, which featured a very young Linda Ronstadt as lead vocalist, had a top twenty hit with the song "Different Drum". What former Monkee wrote this tune?

From Quiz Words and Music By...

Answer: Michael Nesmith

Nesmith wrote the song in 1965, and it was initially recorded in 1966 by The Greenbriar Boys for their album "Better Late Than Never". The Stone Poneys released their version in 1967 and it peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January of 1968. Unable to duplicate the success of "Different Drum", Ronstadt decided to embark on a solo career in late 1968, and The Stone Poneys broke up soon after that.

5. By 1966, The Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. was in full swing. Banned from several U.S. radio stations upon its release, the song "Four Women" was written by which jazz icon?

From Quiz Female Songwriters: 60s and 70s

Answer: Nina Simone

It was released on the "Wild is the Wind" lp.

6. One of the first or oldest songs to be written about a car was composed in 1905 by Guy Edwards (with an assist from lyricist Vincent P. Bryan). A happy example of which auto make was the subject of the song?

From Quiz I Write the Music

Answer: Oldsmobile

The song is "In My Merry Oldsmobile." Oldsmobile used the tune in its advertising for many years. The song was considered racy for 1905, but no so much today: "Come away with me Lucille/ In my Merry Oldsmobile!/ own the road of life we'll fly/ Automobubbling you and I."

7. In 1971 Olivia Newton John scored a hit with her song "If Not For You". Was she the original songwriter though? Who do you think it was?

From Quiz 1960s - 1970s Pop/Rock Songs and Songwriters

Answer: Bob Dylan

The song "If Not For You" was written by Bob Dylan and recorded for his LP titled "New Morning", which was released in 1970. One month after Dylan released it, George Harrison released a version on his "All Things Must Pass" three LP set. Olivia Newton John had the greatest success with the song. Her version reached number twenty five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and hit number one on the U.S. Billboard Easy Listening chart. The year was 1971.

8. The Seekers were the first Australian band to make the UK charts. Their first hit was "I'll Never Find Another You". Who wrote the song?

From Quiz Australasian Musicians who Write the Songs

Answer: Tom Springfield

The Seekers was a Melbourne folk band that took a working holiday on a cruise liner to London. After being teamed up with Tom Springfield they had a number of hit records and were the first Australian band to hit Number One on the UK and American charts.

9. Which lyricist, who was mostly known for his collaboration with Richard Rodgers, wrote the lyrics for the musical 'Showboat'?

From Quiz Don't Forget the Lyricists!

Answer: Oscar Hammerstein II

The stage musical "Showboat" combined the talents of Oscar Hammerstein II and Jerome Kern. Oscar Hammerstein II wrote the lyrics and Jerome Kern the music. The musical premiered on 27 December 1927 at the Ziegfeld Theater on Broadway and ran for a total of 572 performances. It was the first stage production to give black and white characters an equal standing. "Showboat" was based on the novel of the same name by Edna Ferber.

10. P.F. Sloan's commercial success inspired the Liverpool pop band The Searchers to cover one of his songs, which became the last of their Top 20 hits on the U.K. charts. What song was this, which also was the name of their 1965 year-end album?

From Quiz I Have Been Seeking P.F. Sloan II

Answer: Take Me for What I'm Worth

Although "Take Me for What I'm Worth" was the Searchers' last song to reach the Top 20 in the U.K. (as well as the Top 30), it made little impact in the U.S., reaching only number 76 on the Billboard Top 100. Nevertheless, writing a hit song for a Merseybeat group during the "British Invasion" provided Sloan with a counterpoint for his early advocacy of The Beatles: he had advanced from being a mere promoter of the Merseybeat sound to a creator of it.

11. P.F. Sloan's real middle name was Gary. What did the "F" in P.F. Sloan stand for?

From Quiz I Have Been Seeking P.F. Sloan I

Answer: Flip

Sloan was born Philip Gary Schlein, but his father changed the family name to Sloan when he was 12. "Flip" was a childhood nickname for Philip, given to him by his sister Lynn.

12. The Swinging Blue Jeans barely broke the US Top Twenty in 1964 with "Hippy Hippy Shake". Which artist wrote the song and released it as a single five years earlier?
