Samuel Smith was a Baptist minister and wrote hymns but only 'America' remained a well known song. He wrote it in 1831 and was first performed at the Park St. Church in Boston on July 4, 1831. Over the years some have tried to make it our National Anthem, but have not succeeded. It is known as our National Hymn.

Daniel Emmett wrote 'Dixie' in 1859. At the outbreak of the Civil War it was popular in both the North and South. As the war went on it evolved into a Southern song.
3. Who wrote 'Over There'?

Answer: George M. Cohan

'Over There' was composed by George M. Cohan during WWI. It raised the feeling of patriotism among those at home.
4. Who wrote 'America The Beautiful'?

Answer: Katherine Lee Bates

On a trip to Colorado, Katherine Bates was moved by the sight of Pike's Peak to write 'America The Beautiful'. Some feel it catches the spirit of the country more than the National Anthem. It was written in 1893.

Answer: Julia Ward Howe

Best known song of the Civil War. Julia Howe wrote it to meet a challenge by a friend who said soldiers were singing 'John Brown's Body' to the tune and felt there should be more uplifting words to such a beautiful tune.
