Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Allman Brothers Band paved the way for many other southern rock acts. In what year was the band formed?

Answer: 1969

Brothers Duane and Gregg Allman, along with Dickey Betts, Barry Oakley, and others formed the band in 1969. Their big breaktrhough came in 1971 with the album "At Filmore East", considered by music critics as one of the best live albums ever made. Sadly, Duane Allman & Barry Oakley would both die in tragic accidents a year apart and within blocks of each other.
2. This Jacksonville, Florida-based band was "Flirtin' with Disaster" to have their first hit. Who were they?

Answer: Molly Hatchet

Coming out of the same north Florida-south Georgia club scene as Lynyrd Skynyrd and .38 Special, Molly Hatchet didn't break through until the album "Flirtin' with Disaster" in 1979. Incidentally, the band was named after a prostitute who allegedly decapitated her clients with a small hand axe.
3. How many members of Lynyrd Skynyrd were killed in their tragic 1977 plane crash?

Answer: Two members and a backup singer.

On October 20, 1977 a chartered flight carrying the band to a concert in Baton Rouge crashed into a swampy forest outside Gillsburg, Mississippi. A total of six people died in the crash. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and his sister, backup singer Cassie Gaines perished as did the bands assistant road manager along with the planes pilot and co-pilot. All band surviving members were injured to varying degrees. Lynyrd Skynyrd disbanded for many years afterward before making a huge comeback in the early 1990s.
4. What Dixie rockers told us to "keep your hands to yourself" in 1986?

Answer: The Georgia Satellites

They only had one huge hit, but what a hit it was for The Georgia Satellites! The 1986 Top Five hit "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" became an instant classic. Other than "Hippy Hippy Shake", a minor hit from the "Cocktail" movie soundtrack, they failed to have much follow-up however. Lead singer Dan Baird left the group for an equally unsuccessful solo career in 1990.
5. The Elvin Bishop song "Fooled Around Fell In Love" was actually sung by Mickey Thomas. What rock supergroup did Thomas later join?

Answer: Jefferson Starship

Georgia-born Mickey Thomas got his big break when he provided lead vocals on the 1976 Top 3 hit "Fooled Around And Fell In Love". He was asked to join Jefferson Starship in 1979 after Marty Balin & Grace Slick left the group.
6. Which of these southern rock bands featured the younger brother of a key Lynyrd Skynyrd member?

Answer: .38 Special

Donnie Van Zant, younger brother of Lynyrd Skynyrds Ronnie Van Zant rocked it out as co-lead singer of .38 Special. The band formed in 1975. In addition to continuing with .38 Special, in recent years Donnie has occasionally teamed with younger brother Johnny for the country duo simply called "Van Zant".
7. This band paid tribute to many of their fellow southern rock acts by mentioning them in the lyrics of their 1974 song "The South's Gonna Do It Again". Who were they?

Answer: The Charlie Daniels Band

From Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers to ZZ Top a plethora of southern rockers were mentioned in the Charlie Daniels Band song. Among them, Elvin Bishop, Barefoot Jerry, Wet Willie, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
8. This group from Missouri had advice "If You Wanna Get To Heaven". Maybe they gave the advice to "Jackie Blue". Who were they?

Answer: The Ozark Mountain Daredevils

Some consider the Ozark Mountain Daredevils a midwestern band, some a southern band -- much like the state they hail from (Missouri). The band still reforms on occasion for reunion gigs in the Springfield, Missouri area and elsewhere in the midwest.
9. The Lynyrd Skynyrd classic "Sweet Home Alabama" was penned by the band in response to the songs "Southern Man" and "Alabama", both of which they felt bad mouthed the south. Which Canadian singer performed those songs?

Answer: Neil Young

He's been a part of the American music scene for so long many may forget that Neil Young was indeed born in Toronto Canada. In the song "Sweet Home Alabama", Skynyrd vocalist Ronnie Van Zant sings "well I hope Neil Young will remember, a southern man don't need him around anyhow".
10. With rock radio hits like "Train, Train" and "Highway Song" this Jacksonville Florida group put a hard edge on southern rock. Who were they?

Answer: Blackfoot

1979's "Blackfoot Strikes" was the breakthrough album for Ricky Medlock and Blackfoot. Ricky had originally been a drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd in the early years but left to form Blackfoot in 1971. Then in 1996 he rejoined Skynyrd, this time as guitarist and songwriter.
