Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Teardrops fell on Mama's note... when I read the things she wrote.." And just where was Bobby Bare when he read that letter?

Answer: 500 Miles Away From Home

Nice Top ten "cross-over" hit for country star Bobby in 1963. In 1958, due to a label error, Bobby's recording of the novelty song "The All American Boy" was credited to Bill Parsons (one of the song's co-writers). The song was a hit and reached Number Two on Billboard's Pop Charts.
2. In this 1967 release, "Terry and Julie" are observed meeting on Friday nights. Now considered by many to be one of the greatest songs ever written, it never charted in the U.S. Name that tune!

Answer: Waterloo Sunset

This Kinks' classic was originally called "Liverpool Sunset." It did chart in the U.K., reaching Number Two in mid '67. Some people many not find it sad... but friendless, alone, and watching the world from a window seems kind of sad to me.
3. How long would Roy Orbison love his "Blue Angel?"

Answer: till the end of time

Roy vowed in his 1960 Top Ten hit.. "if you'll just say you're mine... I'll love you 'til the end of time.." In 1957 Johnny Mathis vowed to love somebody until "The Twelfth of Never"... but I didn't catch the name.
4. Poor Sue Thompson... these always make her cry. Well, they did in 1961 anyway.

Answer: Sad Movies

Both of Sue's first two hits landed in the Billboard Top Five ("Sad Movies" and "Norman"). Though she had a few other hits, none would be that big. Her little-girl singing voice had many people thinking she was younger than she was (perhaps even pre-teen). In fact, she was past 35 when "Sad Movies" hit.
5. "Walk away, please go... Before you throw your life away..." Doing the right thing can be painful as this poor guy demonstrated in his 1964 hit. Who was he anyway?

Answer: Matt Monro

The song was "Walk Away." A very sad song indeed. While Englishman Matt only scored two U.S. Top 40 hits, he had five records that made the Top Ten in U.K. (including this one). Matt is also famous for being the first singer (of hundreds) to cover the Beatles classic "Yesterday." It was his last Top Ten U.K. hit.
6. In 1966 Dionne Warwick sent a "Message to Michael." Where was Michael?

Answer: New Orleans

"Spread your wings for New Orleans... Kentucky bluebird fly away." This Top Ten heartbreaker was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. In 1972, after 39 charted hit records, Dionne teamed up with the Spinners for "Then Came You." She finally had her first Number One single.
7. In early 1964 Bobby Goldsboro gave us this sob story. Arriving in the charts just one week before the Beatles U.S. chart debut, he still managed to make the Top Ten. What was this tune that got Bobby's solo career going?

Answer: See The Funny Little Clown

"Honey", Bobby's mega-hit, held the Number One spot for five weeks in 1968. Bobby's talents extend beyond singing. A self taught artist, his paintings are featured in one-man-shows at galleries across the country.
8. And the misery just keeps on comin'. Back in 1962 Brenda Lee told us of her pitiful existence after being left all alone. Besides a Top Ten hit, what was the only thing she was left with?

Answer: the beat of her heart

"All Alone Am I" was the hit. In 1961 Brenda made her big screen debut in the movie "The Two Little Bears" with Eddie Albert; Soupy Sales also made his film debut in this fantasy film.
9. Bobby Vinton charted with a lot of sad songs previously made hits by other artists. Which of these songs DID NOT make the Billboard Top 40 charts as recorded by Bobby?

Answer: Blue Angel

Bobby never had a hit with the Roy Orbison classic. Bobby was one of the many singing stars to appear in a movie with John Wayne. In fact, he appeared in two films; he was in "Big Jake" and "The Train Robbers."
10. Written by French recording artist Charles Aznavour, this song laments a selfish life, lost love, and the realization it's too late to change any of it. Translated and recorded by Roy Clark in 1969, it made the Billboard Top 20. What's the name of this pain-fest?

Answer: Yesterday When I Was Young

At Mickey Mantle's specific request, country star Roy sang this at his funeral in 1995. Mickey felt it was a pretty accurate depiction of his life. How sad is that?
