Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start (as the cd does) with the one recorded for this series. 'All my little plans and schemes, lost like some forgotten dream. Seems that all I was really doing, was waiting for you.'

Answer: Real Love

Like 'Free As A Bird' (first track of Anthology 1), this song was one that John Lennon had made a preliminary recording of before his death. Yoko Ono gave the tape the to Paul, George and Ringo who worked their magic on it and turned it into a Beatles song.
2. 'You tell lies thinking I can't see, you can't cry 'cause you're laughing at me.'

Answer: I'm Down

The Beatles often ended their concerts with either 'Twist and Shout' or 'Long Tall Sally' because they liked to finish with fun, fast-paced numbers. Paul wrote 'I'm Down' in the same vein, so they would have another song to choose from. It released as the B-side of the 'Help!' single.
3. 'Here I stand head in hand turn my face to the wall. If she's gone I can't go on feeling two foot small.'

Answer: You've Got to Hide Your Love Away

This was one of John's songs that was played entirely on acoustic guitars, and was 'taken from conception to completion in less than two hours' (Anthology 2 insert notes). 'Norwegian Wood' and 'This Bird Has Flown' are really the same song.
4. 'Why she had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say. I said something wrong now I long for...'

Answer: Yesterday

This is arguably one of the most easily recognized of all the Beatles song, yet it's one in which not all of the band plays.
5. 'Is it right that you and I should fight every night? Just the sight of you makes nighttime bright, very bright. Haven't I the right to make it up girl?'

Answer: It's Only Love

Recorded in June 1965 and released on the non-movie sound track side of 'Help!' this song was written and sung by John.
6. 'And now my life has changed in oh so many ways, my independence seems to vanish in the haze.'

Answer: Help

This is the title song of their second movie, this one in colour!
Years later John talked about his bouts with depression, referring to them as his 'being in a trough'. He wrote 'Help' when he was in one of these 'troughs' and found it amusing that no one realized it.
7. 'She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh. I told her I didn't and crawled out to sleep in the bath. And when I awoke I was alone...'

Answer: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)

Originally titled just 'This Bird Has Flown', this song was recorded for the 'Rubber Soul' album. This is the first song that George played sitar on, and is in fact the first time a sitar was used in a pop song. The version of this song heard on 'Anthology 2' has much more sitar than the version that was eventually released.
8. '...where did you go? I thought I knew you, what did I know? You don't look different but you have changed.'

Answer: I'm Looking Through You

This is another song where the released version is quite different from the way the song was originally recorded. In this version the 'Why, tell me why did you not treat me right..' choruses were not included.
9. 'Let me tell you how it will be, there's one for you nineteen for me. 'Cause I'm the _______, yeah I'm the _______.'

Answer: Taxman

This is a George Harrison song which was written about the ridiculous amount of tax that they were required to pay. They really only got to keep one pound out of every twenty they made. I believe that Britain has changed its tax structure since then (to discourage high earners from leaving the country to avoid the excessive taxation), but I'm not entirely positive.
10. 'When I wake up early in the morning, lift my head I'm still yawning. When I'm the middle of a dream, stay in bed float upstream. Please don't wake me no don't shake me leave me where I am...'

Answer: I'm Only Sleeping

Another one of John's, recorded April, 1966 and released on 'Revolver'.
11. 'Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see. It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out. It doesn't matter much to me.'

Answer: Strawberry Fields Forever

The recording of this song marked a whole new era in the Beatles' careers. With the pressures of touring gone, they took a new, more relaxed approach to recording, taking time to experiment with songs. They took five months to lay down the final versions of this and 'Penny Lane', which is very different from the 30 songs a year that they had averaged previous to this.
12. 'On the corner is a banker with a motorcar, the little children laugh at him behind his back. And the banker never wears a Mac in the pouring rain, very strange.'

Answer: Penny Lane

Relased with 'Strawberry Fields Forever' as a double A-sided single.
13. 'I read the news today oh boy, about a lucky man who made the grade. And though the news was rather sad, well I just had to laugh, I saw the photograph.'

Answer: A Day in the Life

Recorded in early 1967, this song was the big finale of the 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' album.
14. 'Nothing to do to save his life call his wife in. Nothing to say but what a day, how's your boy been? Nothing to do it's up to you, I've got nothing to say but it's okay.'

Answer: Good Morning Good Morning

Each and every song on the 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' is evidence to the months that they spent experimenting in the studio. When the album was finally released it certainly rocked the rock world.
15. 'The celebrated Mr K. performs his feat on Saturday at Bishop's Gate. The Hendersons will dance and sing as Mr K. flies through the ring, don't be late.'

Answer: Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!

John took the lyrics for this song from an 1843 circus poster. It has a real circusy sound to it, created in part by George Martin messing about with calliope recordings. On the DVD version of Anthology Martin claimed that he took some tape, cut it into strips, threw them in the air and then spliced them back together in mixed up order.
16. 'Day after day, alone on a hill, the man with the foolish grin is sitting perfectly still. And nobody wants to know him, they can see that he's just a fool.'

Answer: The Fool On the Hill

This song was recorded in Spetember 1967 for the 'Magical Mystery Tour' album. For the film version of this song, Paul went over to France and shot footage of himself bouncing around in slow motion.
17. 'Let's all get up and dance to a song that was a hit before your mother was born. Though she was born a long, long time ago...'

Answer: Your Mother Should Know

This song was also recorded in September 1967 for 'Magical Mystery Tour'. The movie scene was a little more elaborate though, with the Beatles decked out in white tuxes.
18. 'You say yes, I say no. You say stop and I say go, go, go, oh no... I say high, you say low. You say why and I say I don't know, oh no...'

Answer: Hello Goodbye

Yet another song from 'Magical Mystery Tour', This was released as a single in November 1967, and the Beatles shot an early style of video with this one in which they wore their satin outfits from 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club's Band'.
19. 'Who finds the money when you pay the rent, did you think that money was heaven sent? Friday night arrives without a suitcase, Sunday morning creeping like a nun. Monday's child has learned to tie his bootlace. See how they run.'

Answer: Lady Madonna

If you have never listened to the Anthology cds, I highly recommend it. The early version of this song had a lot of saxophone in it, which I don't remember from the version that I listened to on the radio. This was recorded, and released, just before they went off to India to study Transcendental Meditation.
20. 'Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup. They slither while they pass, they slip away...'

Answer: Across the Universe

This was originally recorded at the same time as 'Lady Madonna' but was not released for another two years, and then only on a charity compilation. It was later released on the 'Let It Be' album.
