Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "It's simply the names of the chemical elements set to a possibly recognizable tune." The Elements Song is to the tune of a song from what Gilbert and Sullivan light opera?

Answer: The Pirates of Penzance

Yes, it's from "The Pirates of Penzance", specifically from "The Major-General's Song".
2. "There's antimony, arsenic, _______, selenium, And hydrogen and oxygen and _______ and rhenium;" Clue (blank 1): A lightweight metal often used in aircraft. Clue (blank 2): This composes most of our atmosphere.

Answer: Aluminum; Nitrogen

Aluminum is often alloyed to create a lightweight but resilient metal used in making aircraft and other things. Nitrogen composes 78% of our atmosphere.
3. "And nickel, neodynium, neptunium, germanium, And ______, americium, ruthenium, ______;" Clue (blank 1): If you add carbon to this, it becomes steel. Clue (blank 2): A radioactive metal used in certain types of weapons.

Answer: Iron; Uranium

Iron and carbon makes steel, which is stronger than each of them would be alone (a fine example of synergy). Uranium, of course, is used in nuclear weapons.
4. "Europium, zirconium, _______, vanadium, And lanthanum and osmium and astatine and radium; And _______, protactinium, and indium and gallium, (gasp) And iodine and thorium and thulium and thallium!" Clue (blank 1): This element is named after the Roman name for Paris. Clue (blank 2): The Latin name for this element was aurum. It has 18 isotopes.

Answer: Lutetium; Gold

The old name for Paris was Lutetia. Aurum was also Latin for gold, hence the symbol Au.
5. "There's yttrium, ytterbium, actinium, rubidium, And boron, gadolinium, _______, iridium; And strontium and silicon and _______ and samarium, And bismuth, bromine, lithium, beryllium, and barium!" Clue (blank 1): It was named after a queen of Thebes in mythology. Clue (blank 2): It is often used in dental procedures.

Answer: Niobium; Silver

The queen of Thebes was Niobe. Silver is used in many dental procedures, but especially fillings, where an amalgam of many materials is used to fill in a tooth where a cavity has been carved out.
6. "Isn't that interesting? I knew you would. I hope you're all taking notes, because there's going to be a short quiz next period." "There's holmium and helium and hafnium and _______, And phosphorous and francium and fluorine and _______; And manganese and mercury, molybdenum, magnesium, Dysprosium and scandium and cerium and cesium." Both blanks are named after a city in Sweden. In all, there are four elements named after this city. What is it?

Answer: Ytterby

Only Ytterby and Stockholm exist. The other two I made up. Stockholm is the capital of Sweden. The other two elements named after Ytterby besides the ones in the blanks, erbium and terbium, are ytterbium and yttrium.
7. "And _______, praseodymium, and platinum, plutonium, Paladium, promethium, potassium, polonium, and Tantalum, _______, titanium, tellurium, (gasp) And cadmium and calcium and chromium and curium!" Clue (blank 1): The Roman Empire used this element for plumbing. Clue (blank 2): This element was the first to be artificially produced.

Answer: Lead; Technetium

Technetium was artificially produced in 1937, a few years before Glenn T. Seaborg created a string of synthesized elements. Lead was used in plumbing by the Romans, hence the Latin name plumbum. The symbol is Pb, so this makes sense. Unfortunately, many people died of lead poisoning from the water that had been carried through it.
8. "There's sulfur, californium, and fermium, _______; And also mendelevium, einsteinium, nobelium; And argon, krypton, neon, radon, xenon, zinc and rhodium, And chlorine, carbon, cobalt, copper, tungsten, tin, and sodium!"

Answer: Berkelium

The college is University of California - Berkeley.
9. "These are the only ones of which the news has come to (a college)... And there may be many others but they haven't been discovered!" This college is known as one of the best colleges in the world, and is the oldest in the United States.

Answer: Harvard

It is very arguably the best college (other contenders would include Oxford and Cambridge) but one college in Mexico is older, so it is not the oldest in North America.
10. Many elements were discovered recently and are not included in the song. Which of these is not a real element?

Answer: Italium

Some others not mentioned are:
Lawrencium Hassium
Rutherfordium Meitnerium
Dubnium Darmstadtium
Seaborgium Roentgenium
Bohrium Ununbium

Many of these elements were named after chemists and physicists, but so were many of the others.
I hope that you will leave here with a greater knowledge of cities in Sweden and queens of Thebes. Have a nice day! : )
