The Great American Songbook Test | Other Music

While Pop Music is linked to the performer the songs in Great American Songbook tend to be identified with the writer. Link each song with Porter, Berlin, Gershwin or Rodgers. Hopefully this will be more accessible than my Keep On Singing quizzes.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who composed "Someone to Watch Over Me"?

Answer: Gershwin

"There's a somebody I'm longing to see:
I hope that he
Turns out to be
Someone who'll watch over me"

This song dates back to 1926 and was included in the musical "Oh, Kay!". Lyrics were provided by Ira Gershwin and one of the earliest performers was Gertrude Lawrence.
2. "They're writing songs of love, but not for me" is the start of the song "But Not For Me", but who wrote it?

Answer: Gershwin

"But Not for me" is a song from 1930 and part of the musical "Girl Crazy". This musical brought both Ginger Rodgers and Ethel Merman to star status.
3. Who brought us the song "The Lady is a Tramp"?

Answer: Rodgers and Hart

"The Lady is a Tramp" is from the 1937 musical "Babes in Arms". It has been recorded by many of the musical 'greats' including Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra.
"I get too hungry for dinner at eight.
I like the theatre and never come late
I never bother with people I'd hate
That's why the lady is a tramp."
4. "Let's Face the Music and Dance" was advice brought to us by which songwriter?

Answer: Berlin

"There may be trouble ahead,
But while there's moonlight
And music and love and romance
Let's face the music and dance"

"Let's Face the Music and Dance" was a 1936 song from "Follow the Fleet".
5. Whose song asked us "How Deep is the Ocean"?

Answer: Berlin

"How much do I love you? I'll tell you no lie,
How deep is the ocean, how high is the sky?
How many times a day do I think of you?
How many roses are sprinkled with dew?"

"How Deep is the Ocean (How High is the Sky)" dates back to 1932. Very much a Jazz standard but also a stand alone song, rather than a song from a show.
6. Which of these songwriters brought us "I Love Paris"?

Answer: Porter

"Ev'ry time I look down on this timeless town,
Whether blue or grey be her skies,
Whether loud be her cheers,
Or whether soft be her tears,
More and more do I realise
I love Paris in the springtime..."

This song dates from 1953 and was included in the musical "Can-Can".
7. Who informed us in a song "Somebody Loves Me"?

Answer: Gershwin

From "George White's Scandals of 1924". Although Ella Fitzgerald included it as part of the "George and Ira Gershwin Songbook" the words came from Ballard MacDonald and B. G. De Sylva.

"Somebody loves me I wonder who,
I wonder who can she be.
Somebody loves me I wish I knew,
Who can she be worries me."
8. Who wrote the song "Change Partners"?

Answer: Berlin

"Must you dance, every dance
With the same fortunate man?
You have danced with him since the music began
Won't you change partners and dance with me?"

This song was written in 1938 and featured in "Carefree".
9. Who composed "Night and Day"?

Answer: Porter

"Night and day you are the one
Only you beneath the moon and under the sun.
Whether near to me or far,
It's no matter, darling, where you are
I think of you night and day."

A 1932 song from "Gay Divorcee".
10. Whose song tells us about "My Funny Valentine"?

Answer: Rodgers and Hart

"My Funny Valentine" is another song from "Babes in Arms" and the writing of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart.
"My funny valentine,
Sweet comic valentine,
You make me smile with my heart.

Your looks are laughable,
Unphotographable
Yet you're my favorite work of art"
