Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How would their distinctive style best be described?

Answer: One singer at a time, two overall, group harmony in background.

After years of using a jazzy group presentation, they hit on the famous style which skyrocketed them to stardom. Once heard it will stay with you.
2. One of their early style songs dealt with a beverage. What was the title of this song?

Answer: Java Jive

"I love coffee, I love tea,
I love the Java Jive and it loves me."
3. Who was the most famous of the Ink Spots during the 1930-1950 era?

Answer: Bill Kenny

They were all great. You've heard Ella and Louis many times but you may not have heard the magnificent bass voice of Paul Robeson. Find his version of "Ol' Man River" and marvel. They were never members of The Ink Spots.
4. How much did they care in "If I Didn't Care"?

Answer: More than words can say

This song made their careers. The high note is reached with the word "compare" in the penultimate line and is remarkable for a tenor in popular music. Of course Mario Lanza was even more amazing, but he was never an Ink Spot.
5. They recorded all of the following songs except

Answer: That Old Black Magic

Old Blue Eyes locked up that one.
6. Who were "We Three"?

Answer: My echo, my shadow and me

The same theme was used in the song "Me and My Shadow" which they did not record. Before The Ink spots, other "lonely" songs such as "All Alone by the Telephone" and "Nobody" had been recorded.
7. Which of the four was one of the original Ink Spots?

Answer: Charlie Fuqua

The group did not originally call itself The Ink Spots but the lineage is continuous. The original four were Orville "Hoppy" Jones, Ivory "Deek" Williams, Jerry Daniels and Charlie Fuqua. Scott Joplin was a magnificent ragtime piano composer during the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth.

He composed the music used in "The Sting", an exciting movie about a racetrack heist. Gene Autry was a cowboy star who appeared with his horse Champion in dozens of Westerns. He recorded a plethora of cowboy tunes, but his biggest commercial hit was a Christmas song that he fought against recording.

It was "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer". Billy Eckstine had many hits duing the fifties. Joplin, Autry and Eckstine were never among the Ink Spots.
8. Which of the original Ink Spots left the group and was replaced by their famous high pitched tenor.

Answer: Daniels

It was fortuitous. After the replacement they released "If I Didn't Care" and the rest is musical history.
9. Which of the following Ink Spots hits can be seen in a video?

Answer: The Gypsy

"If I Didn't Care" was their FIRST big hit but was never videotaped. "The Gypsy" was videotaped with Bill Kenny featured as tenor. It is one of the earliest musical videos I have ever seen.
10. Who was the first member of the original Ink spots to die?

Answer: Orville Jones

He was the original bass voice on their recordings.
