Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I'm just a middle-aged middle-eastern camel-herdin' man I got a little two-bedroom cave here in North Afghanistan Things used to be real nice and they got out of hand Since they moved in..." According to Toby Keith, things got out of hand when who moved in?

Answer: The Taliban

"The Taliban Song", along with "Weed With Willie", are "bus songs" that Toby Keith and Scotty Emerick wrote together. They were never really meant to be released, but were so popular with their fans, that the songs were added to the "Shock'n Ya'll" CD as live tracks.
2. The almost-cult-like favorite movie "Full Metal Jacket" followed a Marine called Joker through Parris Island and then to the Tet Offensive. After the Marines have the encounter with the young female sniper, they head off towards the Perfume River. What song are they singing during this scene?

Answer: The Mickey Mouse Club Song

Joker was played by Matthew Modine. He also appeared in a couple other military films. My personal favorite was "Memphis Belle" in 1990.
3. Every American has heard Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" at least once in their lives! Do you know what other Patriotic song he is known for? Here's a hint, it's off his 1992 album, "American Patriot".

Answer: The Great Defenders

Lee Greenwood performed this song, in addition to "God Bless the USA" at a Welcome Home celebration for my unit. He changed a part of the song to say our unit's name. That was pretty cool.
4. Toby Keith pretty much hit the nail on the head for many of us military members with the following song. Here are some of the lyrics, can you name the song? "I don't do it for money, there's still bills that I can't pay I don't do it for the glory, I just do it anyway Providing for our future's, my responsibility Yeah I'm real good under pressure, being all that I can be"

Answer: American Soldier

The video for "American Soldier" was filmed in Hangar 1600 at Edwards Air Force Base on November 17, 2003.
5. Let's bring it back, way back! All the way back to the American Revolutionary War! What song is considered a popular American children's song nowadays, but was originally sung by American Revolutionary soldiers?

Answer: Yankee Doodle

Before the Revolutionary War, the song "Yankee Doodle" was created by the British soldiers stationed in the American colonies to mock the "disheveled and unorganized Yankees". During the war, the song was embraced by the Colonial Army and turned around on those who used it to mock them. It is also the state anthem for Connecticut, my home state!
6. The song "Get Here (If You Can)" hit the airwaves shortly after Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Although it was not initially meant to be related to the military in any way, its popularity took off when it became an unofficial anthem for all the military spouses left behind. Can you name the artist who released this song?

Answer: Oleta Adams

"There are hills and mountains between us
Always something to get over
If I had my way, then surely you would be closer
I need you closer"
7. One of the catchiest and most widely known military songs is "The U.S. Air Force", informally known as "The Air Force Song". (No bias here!) What is the next word in this stanza? "Off we go, into the wild blue ..."

Answer: yonder

Liberty magazine sponsored a contest in 1938 looking for a "spirited, enduring musical composition" to become the official song for the Army Air Corps. A committee of Air Force wives selected this composition by Robert Crawford out of 757 entries.
8. The first attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor in 1941 was the tragedy of the World Trade Center in 2001 which claimed thousands of innocent lives. Which of the following popular country songs directly refers to the attack on the twin towers?

Answer: Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)

"Where were you when the towers fell?" is now my generation's version of "Where were you when President Kennedy was shot?" That is the question everyone in my mom's generation can answer vividly to this day.
9. It was the valiant defense of a certain American Fort during a British attack on September 13, 1814 that inspired 35 year old, poet and lawyer Francis Scott Key to write the poem which was to become our National Anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." What was the American Fort that was so bravely defended by American troops during the War of 1812?

Answer: Fort McHenry

The poem written by Mr. Key was actually called "Defence of Fort McHenry." It was later set to the tune of "To Anacreon in Heaven", a popular English drinking song dating back to the mid 1700s.
10. Finally, on a twist of the topic, what well-known country group lost a lot of popularity for some remarks at a concert they performed in London on March 10, 2003?

Answer: The Dixie Chicks

The Dixie Chicks also had a rather well-publicized feud with Toby Keith for awhile. They had called his song "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" ignorant.
