Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In January 1950 the "Harry Lime Theme" topped the sheet music chart for four weeks. Who both wrote and recorded this?

Answer: Anton Karas

The theme from the spy film "The Third Man" starring Orson Welles and directed by Carol Reed, was written and performed by Anton Karas. He was an accomplished zither player, and the massive success of the film and his music led to him touring the world playing to Royalty and Heads of State.
2. March 1950 saw a Teresa Brewer recording topping the sheet music sales charts. It was her first hit. What was the title?

Answer: Music! Music! Music!

"Music! Music! Music" was not intended to be the hit song. It was the B side to a song called "Copenhagen", but for some reason the radio stations didn't like "Copenhagen" and played the B side instead.

Teresa Brewer had a long and prolific career, recording some 600 song titles in total. For her contribution to the recording industry she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
3. January 1951 saw "I Taut I Taw A Puddy Cat" top the sheet music charts. Whose voice would be most associated with this line?

Answer: Mel Blanc

Mel Blanc was known as "The Man of a Thousand Voices". He was Tweety Pie, Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn and Daffy Duck to name but a few. His career as a voice actor, mainly in cartoons, spanned six decades, and it was estimated that around twenty million people heard his voice every day.
4. A Les Paul and Mary Ford record sold the most sheet music in April 1951. What was the title?

Answer: Mockin' Bird Hill

Les Paul was one of the early pioneers in multi-track, overdubbed electronic music and with his wife, Mary Ford, made many popular records. "How High The Moon" was one of their best known. He was also influential in the development of the solid body electric guitar, without which the sound of rock and roll would not be possible.
5. In August 1951 "Too Young" was a success from the point of view of both record and sheet music sales. Nat King Cole recorded a version, but who was the popular singer and broadcaster who recorded the British version?

Answer: Jimmy Young

As a singer Jimmy Young had hits with "Too Young", "The Man From Laramie" and "Unchained Melody". He was one of the early disc jockeys on BBC Radio 1, and in 1973 moved to BBC Radio 2 where he presented a morning show that was a mixture of music, recipes, current affairs and chat. This was so popular that it continued until his retirement from broadcasting in 2002.
6. In October 1952 which Al Martino song topped the sheet music charts, and in November 1952 was the first number one on the UK singles chart?

Answer: Here In My Heart

By becoming the first number one on the new UK singles chart, and staying there for nine weeks "Here In My Heart" also has the unique distinction of being the only song to be at number one in a particular year. Vic Damone and Tony Bennet also recorded versions of it.

It lost the number one spot a little sooner on the sheet music chart, being replaced by a Jo Stafford song in late December 1952.
7. From November 1952 the sheet music chart and record sales chart ran side by side. They did not however always agree. Which Jo Stafford song topped the sheet music chart in December 1952 but did not appear on the record chart until January 1953?

Answer: You Belong To Me

"You Belong To Me" has been recorded by Patti Page, Jo Stafford, Dean Martin and even Jerry Lee Lewis. It is one of those melodic ballads that was destined to become an instant standard. It topped the sheet music charts in December 1952 and Jo Stafford's version went on to top the UK singles chart in early 1953.
8. In June 1953 Eddie Fisher topped the record sales charts with "I'm Walking Behind You", but this never topped the sheet music charts. Which Frankie Laine song kept it off the top of the sheet music chart?

Answer: I Believe

"I Believe" was an enormous hit for Frankie Laine. It topped the sheet music chart for 18 consecutive weeks from June to October 1953, keeping not only "I'm Walking Behind You" but also "Moulin Rouge" and "Look At That Girl" from the top spot. Both of these also topped the UK singles chart in that period, but even there they had to alternative with "I Believe" which appeared at the top of the record sales chart three times in the same period.
9. By January 1956 the sheet music charts and the record sales charts were showing increased divergence. While the record charts were topped with "Rock Around The Clock" and "Sixteen Tons" which popular television theme, sung by Bill Hayes, was topping the sheet music chart?

Answer: Ballad of Davy Crockett

"Davy Crockett" was a very popular British television series. Aimed at children it was very popular with adults as well. Crockett was played by Fess Parker. The theme song, "Ballad of Davy Crockett", was played on radio request shows constantly and every child taking piano lessons wanted the sheet music.

The show also led to most little boys, several little girls, and even the odd adult, sporting Davy Crockett hats.
10. In March 1959 the record charts and sheet music charts were both topped by the same piano piece. It was Russ Conway's first hit. What was the title?

Answer: Side Saddle

Russ Conway first found popularity on the television show "The Billy Cotton Band Show". This was a long running BBC television light variety show, and Billy Cotton frequently gave chances to new performers. Russ Conway's good looks and individual piano playing style, which came partly from missing the tip of one finger, made him an instant audience favourite and he went on to have a successful recording career.
