Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In June 1967 this band topped the UK charts with a song whose title may have indicated a symptom of a sudden illness.

Answer: Procol Harum

The hit was 'A Whiter Shade of Pale'. The band's name is said possibly to mean "far from these things" in Latin or to be the name of someone's cat. The Latin is dubious as the grammar is not right for any real meaning.
2. In August 1956 who had a UK number one hit with 'Why Do Fools Fall in Love'?

Answer: Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers

The band still exists but by 1957 Frankie Lymon's lead billing caused in-fighting and he left the band. They are now known as "The Teenagers" though well past their teenage years.
3. In February 1960 Anthony Newley had a UK number one hit song with a one word title. What was it?

Answer: Why?

Anthony Newley was better known as an actor than a singer. He was once married to the actress Joan Collins. His films include "Oliver Twist" (1948), "The Battle of the River Plate" (1956) "The Last Man to Hang" (1956) and "Dr Dolittle" (1967).
4. In May 1965 the Beatles topped the UK chart with this hit.

Answer: Ticket to Ride

This was the last track on side one of their 'Help' album. Written by Lennon and McCartney they both gave different explanations for the song - Lennon said it was about Hamburg prostitutes and McCartney said it referred to a British Rail ticket to Ryde on the Isle of Wight.
5. In July 1968 The Equals had a UK number one hit with 'Baby Come Back'. Who was the band member who went on to have a successful solo career?

Answer: Eddy Grant

Born in Guyana, Eddy Grant grew up in London but left The Equals and returned to Guyana after a serious illness, before taking up a successful solo career. Solo hits include "Living on the Frontline" and "Electric Avenue".
6. In July 1970, this band had a UK number one hit with 'In the Summertime'. Which band was it?

Answer: Mungo Jerry

Fronted by Ray Dorset. 'In the Summertime' was their only hit outside of the U.K. Their name was inspired by the poem 'Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer' from T.S Eliot's 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats' which was also the basis for the musical 'Cats'.
7. In June 1972 T Rex had a UK number one hit with this song.

Answer: Metal Guru

This song was T Rex's fourth and final number one hit in the U.K but it did not chart in the U.S. The Smiths based their song 'Panic' on 'Metal Guru'. Marc Bolan died in a car crash in 1977.
8. Who had a hit with 'Diana' in 1957?

Answer: Paul Anka

Paul Anka is a Canadian singer/songwriter. In 1983 he co-wrote a song called "I Never Heard" with Michael Jackson. He also wrote the theme for the "Tonight" programme starring Johnny Carson.
9. In May 1970 who had a hit with 'Spirit in the Sky'?

Answer: Norman Greenbaum

This was Norman Greenbaum's most famous song. He said its spiritual theme was inspired both by religious songs he'd heard and Western movies. Norman Wisdom and Norman Vaughan were UK comedians. Norman Hartnell was a dress designer to Queen Elizabeth II.
10. In September 1972 Rod Stewart had a UK number one hit with this song. Hint: Don't let your coffee get cold.

Answer: You Wear it Well

'You Wear it Well' was written for the Album 'Never a Dull Moment'. In 1972 Rod Stewart performed this song on the 'Top of the Pops' where he was seen to be reading the words from a piece of paper held in his hand. He never missed a beat though.
