The 4 Seasons had a number one hit for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Walk Like A Man" in 1963. It reached number 12 on the UK singles chart the same year.

The 4 Seasons were Tommy DiVito, Bob Gaudio, Nick Massi and Frankie Valli. There were numerous personnel changes before and after The Four Lovers became The 4 Seasons in 1960. Between 1960 and 1975 The 4 Seasons had five number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100. They had one number one hit in the UK with "December '63 (Oh, What A Night)" which was number one for two weeks in 1976. The 1960 4 Seasons were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999.

Frankie Valli (The 4 Seasons lead singer) was born Francesco Stephen Castelluccio in Newark, New Jersey, USA, in 1934. He recorded solo at the same time that he was still a member of The 4 Seasons. This lead to both Frankie Valli and The 4 Seasons having separate chart hits at the same time, such as "Fallen Angel" by Frankie Valli and "Silver Star" by The 4 Seasons in 1976. Frankie Valli did not sing on "Silver Star". Frankie Valli also has an acting career, he appeared as Rusty Millio the HBO TV series "The Sopranos" which ran from 1999 to 2007.

Dionne Warwick was born Marie Dionne Warrick in East Orange, New Jersey, USA, in 1940. With others that included at one time or another her sister Delia (Dee Dee Warwick), Cissy Houston (Dionne's aunt and mother of Whitney Houston), Judy Clay and Doris Troy, she was in a group called The Gospelaires. The Gospelaires sang backing vocals on Doris Troy's hit, the original "Just One Look" which she co-wrote. Dionne Warwick's first US chart hit "Don't Make Me Over" was written by Bacharach/David. It reached number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. Her real name Dionne Warrick, was misspelled on the record label as Dionne Warwick. Matt Monro had a number four hit with "Walk Away" on the UK singles chart in 1964. It reached number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965.

Matt Monro was born Terrence Edward Parsons in Shoreditch, London, UK, in 1930. Sometimes called the singing bus driver after one of his jobs had been as a London bus driver. He first came to prominence in the mid-fifties when appearing on a BBC show. A big influence on him at the time and the person who gave him his stage name was pianist Winifred Atwell. In spite of this early fame, by the end of the fifties it seemed to be all over until he met George Martin. Martin asked him to record a song for Peter Sellers to copy for an album but Sellers included Monro's version billing him as Fred Flange on the album. As a consequence of that George Martin started to record Monro and he had a number three hit with his second single "Portrait Of My Love" on the UK singles chart in 1960. By the following year Matt Monro was named Top International Act by Billboard.

Martha and The Vandellas had a number eight hit with "Nowhere To Run" on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965. It reached number 26 on the UK singles chart the same year. On re-issue in 1969 in the UK it reached number 42 and again on re-issue in 1988 it reached number 52.

The members of "Martha and The Vandellas" came from many different groups. Rosalind Ashford, Annette Beard and Gloria Williams formed The Del-Phis with others. Some members of the group left and Martha Reeves from The Fascinations and previously The Sabre-Ettes joined and the group had four members. In 1961 now known as The Vels they were working for Berry Gordy singing background vocals for other Motown artists. Gloria Williams left the group and they signed a recording contract with Berry Gordy in 1962 and the trio became Martha and The Vandellas. After two Billboard Top 10 hits in 1963 "(Love Is Like A) Heatwave" and "Quicksand", Annette Beard became pregnant and left the group. Ex member of The Velvelettes Betty Kelly, joined the group and in 1964 they had their biggest hit with "Dancing In The Street".

Horst Jankowski was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1936 were he later studied at the Berlin Music Conservatory. He started out as a classical pianist but by the '50s he was playing jazz. For a period he was the band leader for Italian singer Caterina Valente who was born in Paris in 1931. The single "A Walk In The Black Forest" sold in excess of 1,000,000 copies and earned Jankowski a Gold Disc. His 1965 album "The Genius Of Jankowski" also sold in excess of 1,000,000 copies and also earned a Gold Disc. Horst Jankowski died of lung cancer in 1998 aged 62.

"Run To My Loving Arms" was a number 25 hit for Billy Fury on the UK singles chart in 1965. He never had any chart hits in the US.

Billy Fury was born Ronald William Wycherley in Liverpool in 1940. He later worked on a tug boat on the river Mersey. He got his show business break when he crossed the river Mersey from Liverpool and bluffed his way back stage at the Essoldo theatre in Birkenhead in 1958. His original intention was to interest one of the stars of the show Marty Wilde, in songs that he had written. Impresario Larry Parnes was so impressed with him that he put him on stage that night and later renamed him Billy Fury. The same age as John Lennon, Billy Fury had already had six UK Top 10 hits by the time the Beatles entered the UK chart with "Love Me Do" in 1962. A group called The Silver Beatles had once auditioned to be Billy Fury's backing group. The story goes that they were offered £20 a week if they got rid of the bass player Stuart Sutcliffe. John Lennon refused the deal and the group left but not before John Lennon had acquired Billy Fury's autograph. The Tornados of later "Telstar" fame, got the job instead.

The Newbeats had a number 12 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Run, Baby Run (Back Into My Arms)" in 1965. It reached number 10 on the UK singles chart in 1971.

The Newbeats were Larry Henley (lead singer) born Lawrence Joel Henley in Arp, Texas, USA, in 1941. Brothers Dean born Louis Aldine Mathis in Hahria, Georgia, USA, in 1939 and Mark born Marcus Felton Mathis in Hahira, Georgia, USA, in 1942. They had three US Top 20 hits between 1964 and 1965. Their last US chart entry was "Groovin' (Out On Life)" which reached number 82 in 1970 and the trio split up in 1974. Larry Henley co-wrote "Wind Beneath My Wings" with Jeff Silbar. Many artists recorded the song but the biggest hit version was by Bette Midler. It reached number one for one week on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989. It won Grammy Awards in 1990 for Record of the Year and Song of the Year and in 1991 was certified platinum by the RIAA for 1,000,000 sales in the US.

They had four UK Top 10 hits between 1965 and 1967 which included two number one hits. The group split up in 1969 but by that time Muff and Steve Winwood and Pete York had already left.

The Left Banke had a number five hit with "Walk Away Renee" on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966. It did not chart in the UK.

The Left Banke formed in 1965 were, Michael Brown (keyboards), George Cameron (guitar), Tom Finn (bass), Steve Martin (vocals) and Warren David Schierhorst (drums). After some personnel changes, band members moved to other instruments. Their second single "Pretty Ballerina" reached number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967. Michael brown recorded the single "Ivy, Ivy" using session musicians and it was released under The Left Bank name. This led to legal action from the other members of the group and a plea to their fan club to boycott the record. The record failed to reach the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the writing was on the wall. After a minor hit with "Desiree'" which reached number 98 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967 that was the end of the chart career of The Left Bank.

Manfred Mann had a number five hit on the UK singles chart with "Fox On The Run" in 1968. It reached number 97 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969.

The Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers became Manfred Mann and the Manfreds, then in 1963 became Manfred Mann. The 1964 line up was Manfred Mann, Mike Hugg, Mike Vickers, Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness. Mike Vickers was the first to leave and was replaced by Jack Bruce who was in turn replaced by Klaus Voormann. In 1966 vocalist Paul Jones left to pursue an acting and solo singing career and was replaced by Mike d'Abo. None of these changes affected their chart career and they had 13 UK Top 10 hits between 1964 and 1969 which included three number one hits. They disbanded in 1969 while their last hit "Ragamuffin Man" was still in the Top 10 on the UK singles chart.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band was formed in 1971 with Manfred Mann (keyboards), Colin Pattenden (bass), Mick Rogers (vocals) and Chris Slade (drums). They had three Top 10 hits on the UK singles chart "Joybringer" (1973), "Blinded By The Light" (1976) and "Davy's On The Road Again" (1978). Of these three singles only "Blinded By The Light" written by Bruce Springsteen reached the Billboard Top 10 and was number one for one week in 1977. It reached number six on the UK singles chart in 1976.
